Hello!
The Grammar-Translation Method (GTM) is the classic way of teaching language. It began as a method to teach dead languages such as Latin and ancient Greek and was generalized to teach any second language. In this video, Prof. Dr. Aydan Ersöz talks about the disadvantages and pitfalls of this method. She hopes to bid farewell to GTM and send it to eternity with this video. There is a Part 2 of this video and it will be published soon.

Kolay gelsin.

Hello Dear teacher, we have usually discussed deductive grammar teaching. However, our Meb books consist of lots of grammatical exercises. For instance, my cousin studies in 5th grade and he is learning the present simple tense. His homework is to create positive, negative, and interrogative forms. I googled how to teach a simple present tense's sample lesson, however, I couldn't find it. Could you help me, please? How should I write to find sample lessons?

Dear colleague, if you please watch the videos suggested in this one, you'll see that the national curriculum does NOT include any deductive grammar goals. Hence, the coursebook, which should have been written in line with the curriculum, cannot have traditional grammar explanations or exercises. Otherwise it wouldn't have been approved by the Ministry. This practice may be the result of the teacher's attitude. That's why we are making these videos. We hope to change this useless way of teaching. In the curriculum, you can't find "simple present tense". You should check the function such as "talking about likes and dislikes" or "talking about daily routines". If you use the "function" that the simple present tense serves to search for sample lessons, you can find a number of them. Best regards.

Is mother tongue (L1) use bad for a language class? It could be difficult or stressful for especially beginner students when the teacher speaks only in English even if they exploit visual materials. Additionally, some topics are abstract so teaching them with no L1 can sometimes be challenging.

It's not bad at all. You're also correct in saying that abstract concepts are difficult to understand. I currently teach in Taiwan, and I can tell you, lots of basic ideas in English are almost impossible to present in English because they don't exist or make sense in Chinese language. Sentence structure, verb tense, pronunciation is completely differnt in Chinese to the point that young learners especially will not understand what you say even if you use the simplest English. I've been a teacher for 25 years and evey year someone comes up with a "new best method" to hack language learning and pedagogy. These newer methods seem to ignore the fact that language learning needs a foundation of basic vocabulary and the only way to get that foundation is memorization and drills. Yes that is correct. That is how memory works; through repeated exposure and forgetting, or of you want to get fancy.... maintenance and elaborate rehearsal. You cannot just envelop students in L2 and magically expect your body gestures, comprehensible input and other immersive techniques will make them learn. Sure, that works well for very simple verbs and nouns and very simple ideas, but once you start to get into more complex ideas, you need more direct methods of instruction. At the end of the day, if you can't remember, you won't know. Simple as. Educators need to stop discarding and discredit these traditional methods, approached, techniques simply because newer ones exist. In 10 years, the internet will be littered with videos entitled "TPR is dead" or "RIP Communicative Approach". I'm not even making the case that the traditional methods are the best methods, but we should stop pretending that, despite their shortcomings, they're not useful in certain instructional scenarios. Let's not forget too that at the endbof every course of instruction is an assessment so students need to know the material that will be tested very well. Also stop pretending that the newer methods that superseded are are some sort of magic bullet or hack that are automatically superior.
