I chose a standard height Vivaro for convenience. This alone outweighs the extra height IMO. The only issue with a standard van is that you cant register it as a campervan with the DVLA anymore, as one of the conversion requirements is a "high top".

So far I've cut in and fitted windows, removed bulkhead, all sound deadeded, insulated, osb floor put down, ceiling panels cut and carpeted. Just spent the day getting on with cutting ply panels and carpeting. Top tip with carpet, it stretches loads, and u want loads of sharp Stanley blades for the cuts!

Would be best to remove that insulation as it’s the wrong type for a camper build. It will soak up water like a sponge (condensation etc.) and rot out the van! @viv-i-vangoesforth2 жыл бұрын
ola Brendan. a couple of things this model is prone to. Theres a design flaw with the scuttle under the bonnet which forces water into the injector area. Check under the bonnet in the injector area and see if theres rust there.what happens is, the injectors rust and sieze and then blow the engine. removing and replacing injectors is very expensive- about a grand an injector. Theres a video on youtube telling you how to seal the scuttle so it stops water getting into the injectors. Second thing is, that at over 200K you really need to think about a timing chain replacement. Midland timing chains on facebook are great- about 450 for this van and cheaper than a new engine.If you dont and that chain goes-its a six K engine replacement. And of course, final problem with a van that old is clean air charges. Youre liable as they arent exempt. The vans are brilliant to drive though and if you sort the scuttle out and the timing chain and possibly a gearbox oil change with the major service, you should be ok. The tvr/vivaro forum on facebook is a great place for advice. Oh, and avoid putting car alloys on the van. Lots of idiots put normal car alloys on with wobble bolts which are unstable and bugger the bearings up. Plus you void your insurance if you have to claim because they are not load rated for the van-dont forget, you'll be putting an interior in. of course, theres the speed limits- 10mph less with vans. You also need to look at insuring the van as a camper in conversion. there are lots of specialist insurance companies out there such as Brentacre and Aplan Thatcham. Viv-i-van is insured with Aplan Thatcham and my insurance was 360 a year with the conversion complete and insured for 20K If i think of anything else, I'll reply to this comment. You got the makings of a good van conversion there. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with it and your adventures when its done....no more cooking at the back for you. As always, bessy regs from me and if you need to chat, I'm on insta as viv-i-van goes forth. respect- Kenny
@BrendanExplores2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for all that detailed advice mate 👍 I'll check the engine bay and check around the injectors 🙂
@Matty-Travels2 жыл бұрын
This is false. It's not a grand per injector. It's around 1300 for all the injectors. Injectors won't blow your engine.
@viv-i-vangoesforth2 жыл бұрын
That's the price some of the guys on the tpv forums have said if the injectors get seized and need to be removed. Either way, it's a known problem with the model and a good thing to check. Even 1300 quid is a lot of money to find when you don't need to
@richardwillson1012 жыл бұрын
Stop spouting "third hand crap" that you have read on an Internet forum. How do "sized injectors" "blow your engine"? It's not even logical. The ONLY time they present an issue is when you need to replace them or remove them to rework the engine. Other than that they could be sized in for 300+K miles and not present an issue. Plus "1K each" 🤣 maybe if you go to the same place separately 4 times and a new guy does it every time. If ever one is found to be an issue, get all done at once for peace of mind and maximum cost vs reward. Vehicle advice is always better first hand, and if second/third hand, always to be taken with a pinch of salt and stated as such.
@richardwillson1012 жыл бұрын
@my_off_grid_life another "forum expert" who doesn't have 1st hand experience but passes it off as such. It's always wise to let people know when your "advice" is 2nd/3rd hand otherwise it makes you sound stupid. "I have heard" or "I have read" would immediately clear this up. Instead, we have to sit and work out how on earth "sized injectors" can in any way cause engine issues if not disturbed 🤷♂️ The Internet is a wonderful place full of experts... but the issue is filtering the crap.

@@BrendanExplores Is there any service history with the van? I've had a look at the MOT history and it’s not too bad, just wear and tear, ball joints, track rod ends etc. But if you have no record of oil changes then get this done along with the fuel and air filters and the timing chain checked. The timing chain is supposed to be for life on these but if it's not been done you will want to seriously consider budgeting for this. Another thing to check are the gearchange cables, make sure they are in good condition because if they snap you will be stranded.

Hi Brendan. Like you I've got a Renault Trafic 06 plate. Bit rough and ready, but I hope to transform mine like you. Only difference is I'm 73 this year...

Been looking fwd to seeing how it's going. Watch out for the saggy height barriers - might be a good idea to check your height - I have a short wheel base transit 1.98 meter I don't go in anything lower than a 2.10, there are a lot of barriered car parks in popular places and city centers..

just need some swivels on those seats.... not that I've got a double swivel base I'm trying to sell.. I'm un-campering my Vivaro and turning it into an office on wheels instead... just isn't big enough for us with a couple of big dogs.. So following along for some inspiration for any changes i might make

Ahh nice one mate and I think I'm going to leave out the swivel seats as they seem more faf than they are worth to be honest. Hope the videos help with some inspiration 🙂👍

I've just watched you video and I can confirm that the blue material that was round the windows is standard on the versa model as versa was a mobility company that would convert a basic renault trafic for disabled users. I know this as I have the same van as you and I'm going through the same process lol .mines that similar that even the first part of the reg is the same as mine
@BrendanExplores2 жыл бұрын
Oh wow! Thanks for the heads up mate 👍 good to know the history. Have you had much luck with the roof liner?
@martinfranklin18312 жыл бұрын
Mine had a different roof lining than your and it had all sagged so I just ripped it out I think yours will be clipped into pre pressed holes as when I took mine of there was ribs that run from left to right I should imagine that's how yours is fixed to

Nice van mate I had one last year that I converted. Most important thing is I learned is before you put alot of money into the conversion. Get the engine and gearbox checked and a good service. I spent months converting mine only to half the bloody gearbox go 🤦♂️. I enjoyed the time that I had with it. Also that insulation in the sides if its fiberglass insulation probably be best to remove as holds water. You can get recycled bottle insulation in bnq rather cheap a roll. Also check under the plastic driver and passenger side steps covers as I had about 3 inches of water in the bottoms. Used to fill up because the drainage holes in the front windscreen scuttle would block up with muck. Take care mate look forward to build. 👍👍

That cupboard could be useful and WD40 might get the glue/foam off. The good thing about a single passenger seat, is you can get into the back without getting out of the van, if you are surrounded by wolves or it is hissing it down.
@BrendanExplores2 жыл бұрын
Hopefully I can make something decent out of it 👍 and yeh your right but I needed three seats for the family 🙂

Considering the age of the van I think it's adhesive added by someone after manufacture, older glues tend to go that colour. Most car companies won't add insulation for warmth but will add insulation for sound in key areas. It's normally metallic looking pads around the foot wells and where the exhaust runs under the car/van. From all the pictures I can see the Renault Trafic has always had plastic trim inside as well.
@BrendanExplores2 жыл бұрын
Cheers for the advice and tips mate 👍 I'll probably replace to insulation 🙂
@retrorecharge862 жыл бұрын
Have you thought about insulation? Just used a company called dodo mat on my camper, would recommend them for all insulation on the van
@BrendanExplores2 жыл бұрын
I'll take a look at them mate 👍 thanks for the tip 🙂
@glennfilth70332 жыл бұрын
Before adding carpet you might want to insulate the van, otherwise all you will end up with is a cold metal conservatory. Which in turn will loose heat faster.

Good point, that's coming along for sure 🙂👍
