Sailing Nandji - Frothlyfe

Sailing Nandji - Frothlyfe

Жыл бұрын

The weeks are ticking by and yet there is still a tremendous amount of work to be done... www.sailingnandji.com
In this episode, we are scrubbing, cleaning, cutting, grinding, measuring, drilling, gluing, painting, fibreglassing and last but not least, swearing our way through this new Boat refit. We knew there was a lot of work ahead of us, but it easy in your mind to down play how much you actually need to do until the work begins. With some help from a few local tradies, hopefully we can cut through the jobs and have our New Boat floating sooner than later!
Removing the rotted cupboards, we are making jigs and cut out new pieces to replace them. Workers are making the outside look pretty as they sand the bottom and buff the topsides. The decks are scrubbed and the rotted floors are fixed and installed.

Hello Legends!!! Wow what a lot of info and projects to consume in this update on Nandji II. Such a beautiful boat and given the top shelf job Yoshi did polishing old Nandji during Operation Tallula project the new boat is going to be spectacular!!!! Great score on the new sails and other boxes of stuff in storage. A fantastic job getting some of the boat yard lads doing the outside dirty work as well. Super stoked to see the next episode. Thanks for sharing! Yew!

Cabinetmaker VIc here.... A handy tip is to transcribe your template onto 3mm MDF which is dirt cheap, trim the 3mm to fit you space perfectly. Once it is perfect, then transcribe that exact shape onto the final piece of ply or solid wood that the shelf will be. Then chuck or re-use the 3mm MDF piece for a smaller shelf. I often use an electric planer or belt sander (hooked to a vacuum exractor of course) for trimming the 3mm piece. Sometimes a power file can be useful too.

You frothers are the bravest international boat buyers in the world. Even though you boat a pretty good boat to begin with your Nandji 2.0 needs so much work. Yikes!!!! I watch Yosh sweating buckets as he's working in the aft cabin and is munching around in cupboards that have been destroyed by an ingress of water that has leaked in from the stanchion fittings or maybe even the genoa and stay sail tracks on deck. I had that problem on my boat which I never solved but the next owner was craftier than I was and he managed to sort things out. I also had leaking where the handrails were fastened to the cabin top. It's all these hidden delights that come up and bite you in the bum. But you guys are troopers. You never seem to let things really get you down. Hell, after everything you went through with Nandji 1.0 the Tayana must seem like a cake walk, except that it's bigger and therefore a lot more expensive and time consuming to fix. Your fixit solution for the teak decks greatly improved the look of the wood as well as the cabin top and some Brightside White paint will make it pop. Keep on truckin'. Lots of love from snowy Canada. Tonight we are expecting 10 to 20 cms. of snow and the temperature is going to drop down to -16 Celsius.

She is coming together very nicely! Hiring some help will be a huge back saver and actually help you get her back in the water. I think what will determine how long you keep those teak decks will be how hot they get on your feet. I think you and the little will all need some deck shoes with teak decks. That said not replacing them right now will save you a lot of time and money. Also, you can decide if you even want them to be real teak in the future or fiberglass with the spongy teak looking pads designed to keep your feet from burning.

I do not know if this will be of any help, but I used this ploy to replace parts of rotten Balsawood in decks and hulls. It is a bit messy, but strong and manageable. One can also use it under a piece of plywood covered in release compound, so one can further finish it by sanding, if repairing a part in a dress structure or impact damaged deck, so more glass layers on top may be added. I used a mixture of slow-cure epoxy resin, those rice-grain sized styrene beads, but in the event they are hard to source, ordinary bean-bag Styrofoam beads would do at a pinch (they dissolve in polyester so it has to be epoxy) and , most importantly, cotton-fibre glue powder. The cotton fibre glue powder and epoxy coat the styrene, making a hard shell honeycomb when it is set which is extremely strong, sticks to all surfaces making a perfect fit no matter how irregular the space or surfaces and is capable of load bearing. What is more, one can rake out all of the rotten balsa and poke the stuff into the spaces remaining using a piece of timber, even squeeze it roughly into place first using a length of hose and a plastic squeeze bag, like icing a cake. The the epoxy will stick to both original surfaces and any surrounding surfaces, making an excellent filler for the end spaces between a replacement panel of Airex foam PVC or a Polyurethane foam. It can be cast in place in a plywood release compound top, so that it can be used to replace with a section of new deck, a large space where old rotten balsa was removed prior to laying on a new glass surface. Before using this, make a test panel using a couple of sheets of cheap 3mm plywood, and a sandwich about 15mm thick, and test it to breaking of the plywood. That should be convincing enough before using it aboard If you are using it below the waterline, it SHOULD be OK and non-absorbent, and even if it gets wet from an adjacent structural failure; should remain firmly bonded. Another ploy I used when making large fillets using epoxy resin, was to incorporate PVC electrical conduit, sanded for better adhesion. I have also built structures from PVC tubing, then wrapped it in fibreglass tape to make deck-house awning supports. ,

Hi Bonita and Yosh, my take away from this episode is many observations. Two young Australians born into a country built from hard work, community, integrity, we were once called the lucky Country for all these reasons. Today this has changed immensely, sadly😢. These are qualities you both have, stay authentic as per normal, work hard in life for your dreams, your babies, you never sold out to agendas and today it’s very obvious who did, people will eventually flip over to those who kept their integrity in check. Don’t feel guilty about employing locals from other countries to assist, you are actually assisting these wonderful people to feed, home, build their own dreams in life for their loved ones, this is how our world should work, if many more worked on this mantra what a beautiful world we would be. It should never be about hand outs, but hands up! Help your fellow man so to speak. Socialism, communism is oppressive, and should not be supported as we would never get to live our own dreams, sail on Nandji, you two are true blue! ❤

congrats on the new boat-- you are both amazing in what you have done over the years-- you have tackled some huge projects both sailing and boat reparis. Re the teak decks. They're a pain in the arse and I have a personal policy of never owning a boat with teak deaks... However when you do need to change them, my suggestion is just get rid of the teak. Glass it all up and put non skid on. Its a big job but replacing with teak is hugely expensive and then in 10-15 years you have to do it all again... Phil

I bought a 20 year old swan with teak decks in rough shape. I did the acid. Then I used semco teak deck treatment and redid the caulking where necessary. Teak decking solutions sells all of the stuff and I think it would be way easier for you to refinish the decks you have.

Advise for the deck. Replacing is a huge and expensive job as you know. Good teak is hard to find. Your teak will still have years of life if it has some left. I noticed when you where talking about the deck you ran your hand over it, i noticed the caulking in higher than the teak. Take a blade or fenn machine and cut off the excess. Then LIghty! 60 or 80 sand the deck. Recaulking is an option but its a lot of work and if not done right will look very bad. After the light sand wet the deck and leave it to dry .. during that period keep an eye on areas that are still wet . for example along the caulking seem which have come apart. Tape and mark them and when dry replace that section of caulking. Honest keep your current deck as long as possible, just give it a bit of love and she will last for years to come. A good way to see how much teak you have left is to one a deck hatch and check the thickness. I am sure you have years left. Something thats very important! no more acid! A light sand is better than acid. it will kill your caulking. If i can be of any help just let me know. I have recaulked yachts and replaced decks. Little tricks that make life a bit easier. So if possible restore your deck and it will last for years.
