Ex deputy chief of army staff General Muzaffar Usmani was known for his key role in the October 1999 coup. He was serving as the Corps Commander Karachi when the then army chief Gen Pervez Musharraf overthrew then prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s government. Gen Usmani who was once considered the most powerful general of Pakistan army , spent miserable life after retirement. Bilal Ghauri shares further details in his new series "Pakistan Generals"

General Usmani, at that time a captain, was our neighbor in fort colony, Multan, an army officers residential area. This was in 1973 I was 11 years old and a frequent visitor to his house. He was newly married then and had no children. Unlike other army officers, who are mostly stern and boorish, he used to be very welcoming and encouraging always offering sweets and biscuits and carrying out small talks and jokes. I considered him to be a smart young officer and was very impressed by his very friendly bearings even with a child like me. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Gen Muzaffar Usmani was one of the most disciplined and straight forward officer of Pak Army. He followed his Chief orders at the time of plane hijacking. He always stayed away from from politics and focused on his core tasks. He never made billions of assets and remained within the means of his legal salary, pension and official perquisites. To me the opinions posed posed by the journalist is based on racial bias since he was an Urdu speaking person. No one can identify any kind of corruption or politics by Gen Muzaffar Usmani. Last but not the least, after his retirement, he lived in Pakistan in Karachi that is his hometown.

Gen Usmani was with Gen Musharraf, however, Gen Iftikhar was reluctant and initially did not recieve the calls of Gen Usmani. Obviously, he was soon relieved of command later on. I was the second person, a field officer to reach airport just behind Commanding Officer of 30 FF (He, his gunman and the driver while I was with one Second-Lieutenant, driver and 10 strong QRF.). Gen Musharraf was from my Unit and luckily we were in Malir Cantt. Gen Usmani was upright, honest and clean person just like Gen Musharraf & Gen Mehmood. You can judge that from his car, if you want to. Gen Mehmood was my first Divisional Artillery Commander. May Almighty bless their souls Ameen.

How can an incompentent PM nominate a competent chief who Gen Usmani served when he had pledged not to indulge in poliics? If PM is incompetent then the chief is a croony and incompetent and vice versa! Makes no sense that PM is a devil yet nominates an angel! Usmani simply served his COAS (in line with Army constitution) and not the country (against its constitution) so he served who made sure his "job" is intact- cant fault him. But an upright officer would have served the country above anything! May Allah Bless his soul but what Pakistan faces today are direct effects and results of failure to sacrifice your job than "saving your job" and using the excuse of "Nazuk Daur" or "Corrupt PM"

You have so much information and you’ve worked so hard. The only downside is your spoken commentary which is not clear and you normally drop your ending words which is very frustrating as it becomes inaudible. Please do some work on that.
