Belgian trainer Hubert De Maesschalck and Luca Bussoletti - Tjasa Vulic, SLO, collaborated with WDSF in creating free "You Training DanceSport" resources. The video was recorded in August 2011 at the DanceSport Centre Stuttgart-Feurebach. WDSF wishes to acknowledge the support of Hubert, the demonstrators Luca and Tjasa, as well as of the TSZ Stuttgart-Feuerbach.

When they wrote the original theory book, rise and fall was measured through ones head height in relation to the room, not in relation to heels and toes. Subsequently if you rise at the end of one through the foot, i.e the heel leaving the floor on 1& you generate a “rise to swing” action, which ultimately stops movement. If you rise through the body and leg on 1& , without the heel leaving the floor you’ll generate a “swing to rise” action. The heel will naturally leave the floor with the swing release of the left leg which will generate more body flight. Lifting your heel off the floor on 1& is a misinterpretation of the original book, a rookie mistake I made in my early years as a professional reading the theory book. Ultimately it cost me 10yrs of my dancing career, my greatest improvement and understanding of movement happened when I stopped doing this action. So to be clear: Rise and the end of one (1&) through body and leg only (this will change your height in relation to the room) release the left swinging leg and you’ll continue to rise with the right heel naturally peeling off the floor, therefore at the extent of the stride you will be on 2 toes. From there you continue to rise on 3, only lowering at the end of three (3&). Use that lowering on 3& to generate momentum (down swing).

totally agree with MZESSENZE. Wearing a long dress covering your feet in a dance instructional video is stupid. The student can't see the details in the positioning of the feet which is a big part of the "how to" of ballroom. Also Instructors often wear all black which hides details in the positioning of the legs. Which leg is which?

Recently my teacher keep tell me to improve basic step about rise and fall, I knew now, if you going down too low at 1 step and quick rise at 2nd step, fall too quick at 3rd step are the wrong way, because your dance body will look jump up and down, not a good view, if you use the right way, rise up at end of 2nd step, smooth rise top high till 3step, and softly fall at the end of 3 step. Whole movement will like a water flow, a wave will up at 3rd step. Every teacher ask me to practice until become a habit, hard to learn!

It's not so clear of the demonstrations between the right way and the wrong way of using the power of body instead of using the body weight, power of the legs and the knees. Both demonstrations look the same.

I see the difference. Watch how long they stay down the wrong way vs. the right way.

JUST CONCENTRATE ON THE USE OF THE ANKLES AND FEET DURING THE EXTENDED TIME DURING THE RISE AND FALL ON BEATS 2& 3& WHEN THEY DANCE THE STEPS THE RIGHT WAY . THE RIGHT WAY IS MORE MUSICAL, THE WRONG WAY JUST CORRECTLY TIMES THE STEPS...I agree it can difficult to note the difference unless one understands the importance of continued dancing of the body on beat 2&3&.

Dear Mr. De Maesschalck; this video cost nobody nothing and I appreciate your explanation. I would refer to Ballroom Dancing by Alex Moore for an view of Rise and Fall, the same explanation.

My friends: not many teachers know Rise and Fall. As an International examiners, I failed many applicants because of that. R. and is more complicated than going up and down.

His partner's dress is beautiful, however, it is not practical for demonstrating because it covers her feet, which does not allow the viewer to see the details.
