Trimming the roots is very helpful, keeps them from using as much water and they don't get tangled up. Just leave at least 1/3 of the root system. I learned this from an Aerogarden group I am in.

@Garden4Goodies Do you still use the rise garden? I was looking at it but I came across some bad reviews from people who have had it more than a few months. Various components going out with no help from the company etc. What do you think?

Very helpful! I've been looking at getting one of the rise gardens and it's good to know what kind of hiccups to expect.
