You missed the lower strut being shot through. Your wing was about to fold. Nice timing. I hope you do more Rise of Flight. It's my favorite. Perhaps, another career?

The SE-5a is my favorite Brit fighter of WW1. Holy Moley, Taff! You were a 1-man air force! You had more damage than I thought - top wing as well as the strut. Beautiful landing. Well done!

Albert Ball was known to use the tactic of flying up under enemy planes from their blind spot and firing the Lewis straight up into them... He also experimented with mounting guns to fire down and other angles.

As good a game as IL2 is, I do prefer ROF. That was a great landing Taff, probably one of your best ever! And a lucky return home too, looking at the state of that wing!

At Tangmere Air museum they have a mock up of the SE5 cockpit you can sit in I'm 6foot and 13.5 stone it was cramped, I know they were slightly smaller back then but if you add the flying suit I'm surprised they could fly them at all One thing that caught my eye was a Webley revolver in a holster strapped to the left side of the cockpit The chap who was talking me through the controls and dials said it was because they didn't have parachutes, so rather than crash whilst burning up they just put a bullet through their skull The courage of those men is astounding

Nice one Taff. That wing was on it's last legs (struts)! Being able to angle the Lewis gun, what a great idea, not just to attack from below and avoid the tail gunners but also in a turn, smart thinking. Pax

Good to see some Rise of Flight again, Taff! You had a bit of a rusty start, but as you say, it was your first time flying the SE5a, probably Britain's best fighter of the First World War. Your plane was chewed up a bit worse than you thought. Your port wing strut was loose and it's a wonder your top wing didn't fly off. Fantastic landing in the circumstances and five kills in your back pocket. Well done!

Great sortie! No blip awitch on the SE5a, as it had a liquid-cooled inline V8. The rotary-engined aircraft had the blip switch.

i pressume you meant the I8 or the inline 8 not the inline V8 and by rotary you meant radial

@johnclarke2553
@johnclarke2553 2 жыл бұрын
@@djporsche3922 No, I meant what I said. The SE5a had an inline V8, and aircraft like the Camel, Pup, Fokker Dr1 had rotary engines. "The rotary engine is an early type of internal combustion engine, usually designed with an odd number of cylinders per row in a radial configuration, in which the crankshaft remained stationary in operation, with the entire crankcase and its attached cylinders rotating around it as a unit. Its main application was in aviation, although it also saw use before its primary aviation role, in a few early motorcycles and automobiles. This type of engine was widely used as an alternative to conventional inline engines (straight or V) during World War I and the years immediately preceding that conflict. It has been described as "a very efficient solution to the problems of power output, weight, and reliability". By the early 1920s, the inherent limitations of this type of engine had rendered it obsolete."
@djporsche3922
@djporsche3922 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnclarke2553 straight means inline and the v configuration is different of inlines and rotary nowadays is the engine used in rx7 or rx8 and has nothing to do with radials or aircrafts. I am a car enthusiast and have read a lot of this stuff and believe me people get them wrong all the time.

On IL2 I fly biplane battles against Gloster gladiators using a biplane of similar age, but has retractable undercarriage, rockets and cannons. Amazing fun, the gladiators have much more powerful engines, faster rate of climb but not quite so agile, air to air missile attacks ar very impressive. AND a great last resort when your trying to land a damaged aircraft or your cannons have jammed.

I love how, no matter how fast the plane is falling, one wing on one side ALWAYS stays attached. Speaking of wings, how dafuq did that SE5a's wing stay on with one strut broken and the structural damage? Now, to the REAL question. How could those two-seaters be bombers when NONE of them were carrying bombs, not even at the very beginning of the video?
@foreverpinkf.7603
@foreverpinkf.7603 3 жыл бұрын
Hand released bombs inside the plane, maybe?
@colindouglas7769
@colindouglas7769 2 жыл бұрын
I do believe the bombs in those days rather than being carried below the wings or in a bomb bay as in WW2, they were carried strapped to the side of the fuselage by the cockpit facing downward and dropped via a primitive release mechanism operated manually by either the pilot or more likely the observer/rear gunner looking over the side. No real way of aiming the bomb accurately, it was just a matter of dropping and hoping you hit something worthwhile.
