I am from Chennai. India is politically a country. But culturally it is a continent. North is too far behind south in social development that makes it extremely difficult for the poor in North to reach middle class level. The differences are too many to such an extent that it very difficult for people in North and South to communicate with each other on the same wave length....particularly people in rural areas in south have absolutely nothing in common with people in rural areas in North. They live in different worlds. IMHO...there is NO one India.

I am from Chennai. India is politically a country. But culturally it is a continent. North is too far behind south in social development that makes it extremely difficult for the poor in North to reach middle class level. The differences are too many to such an extent that it very difficult for people in North and South to communicate with each other on the same wave length....particularly people in rural areas in south have absolutely nothing in common with people in rural areas in North. They live in different worlds. IMHO...there is NO one India.

In my view India is politically a country, but culturally a continent. For example, my cousin married a girl from Bihar. There was very strong opposition from both sides. The Bihari family did not want a South Indian as their son-in-law. My aunt and uncle did not want a North Indian as daughter-in-law. But my cousin married the Bihari girl and they are now happy together in Kolkata where they both work. Both families never meet face to face. Few years ago, I came across a Kashmiri guy from Srinagar who said that he does not mind Muslims from different parts of India buying property and settling in Kashmir. But he does not like Hindus settling in Kashmir permanently. The reason is that muslims are culturally closer to Kashmiris than Hindus. He asked if I had met any Kashmiris in Chennai. When I said No, he said..."That's because South is almost a foreign country for us." I can go on like this. This is the reality. I can salute the Indian flag. But that does not mean that people in north and south have a lot in common. Punjabis and Sindhis have more in common with Pakistanis that they have in common with South India. Mahatma Gandhi and Mohammed Ali Jinnah both spoke Gujarati as their mother-tongue. But there was no communication barrier between the two. But neither of them could travel around South India without interpreters.
