Man. Was going through some DEEP, DEEP heavy shit when this song came out. Over my failing relationship and being confused in what is right. Anchors and the ocean were are things-mine and my ex. Are relationship was so dysfunctional and unhealthy but we fought to stay together. I really really really felt “Am I your sail or your anchor? Am I the calm or the hurricane?” We both had been doing fucked up things to each other for so long but we loved each other in our own special, fucked up way. She was the love of my life. Even though she’s married and lives 1,400 miles away I still want the best for her and I hope she’s happy, safe & content. Even if it’s not with me. We were just always hurting each other. “How is it a thing?-that we just wanna hurt each other.?” We talked for the first time in over a year and I didn’t even recognize her voice or how she was acting. Miss ya MAP. 😢 Sorry for venting

A song about the struggles of being a parent and not being ready for it. Beautiful. Edit: Tim says this in a video explaining the meaning of a few RA songs. Its about his relationship with his now-adolescent daughter.

I think this is the most true comment I've ever seen I was a single father of a little girl her mom my xwife wasn't in her life at all never really even met her that she remembered until she was almost 7 years old I was there for her for everything and did everything for with little help when she was young when she got a little older my parents started helping me and when she was 12 years old I had to leave and because of circumstances had to go to Chicago for work and other reasons it hurt me so bad and still does to this day. My daughter is 17 years old now a beautiful amazing young lady and doing great and going to start her senior year, half of which will be for college credits. Sometimes the hardest decision is one that you don't want to make ,it makes you the saddest you could ever be but it's still the right decision.

I love this song so much and it has a lot of meaning for me. The first time I heard it I was in jail because I got in a fight with my mom and burned an abandoned house down cause I was angry at her. I feel like my mom could have written this song about me. I almost cried when I heard it the first time. I realized I needed to change and do better, stop doing drugs and drinking and stop going to jail. Been free for 2 months and sober for 22 months now. Oh my god, this song reminds me so much of my relationship with my dad, my only guardian and the closest person to my heart throughout my life. He did everything to make me a good, independent and strong person, and we sometimes fought, at times traumatically so. Slamming doors, punching walls, biting, kicking, shouting, screaming. All of it. But in the end I get to call him on my cell phone and tell him I love him and that I'm happy that he's my father, and that's all that matters.

*Lyrics* I can see the storms in her eyes now I'm falling overboard in the waves In over my head and she's a high tide That keeps pushing me away I thought that we would build this together But everything I touch just seems to break Am I your sail or your anchor? Am I the calm or the hurricane? I feel the ground start to shake I hear a voice shouting "No" But there is no fucking way I'd leave you So I'll just hold you like a hand grenade You touch me like a razor blade I wish there was some other way right now, oh oh Like a house on fire we're up in flames I'd burn here if that's what it takes To let you know I won't let go of you, oh oh But is the soundtrack to our lives The bang of a slamming door What happens when we all start to feel like Nothing matters anymore Every day like a chambered round, a trigger pulled A hammer click, a breath we hold A world outside I can't control No matter what I do So I'll just hold you like a hand grenade You touch me like a razor blade I wish there was some other way right now, oh oh Like a house on fire we're up in flames I'd burn here if that's what it takes To let you know I won't let go of you, oh oh How is it a thing That we just wanna hurt each other I'm waiting out the rain 'Cause life is gonna rain forever Someday you will learn That all I ever did was for you And I would do it all again I would do it all again 'Til then I'll hold you like a hand grenade You touch me like a razor blade I wish there was some other way right now, oh oh Like a house on fire we're up in flames I'd burn here if that's what it takes To let you know I won't let go of you, oh oh Of you (oh oh) Of you (oh oh) Of you (oh oh) Of you

When my wife and I had our first and only daughter, things got really rocky for awhile between us, business wasn’t doing to well. Everything was falling apart. And there were times I wanted to give up. (I’m telling you with with tears in my eye cuz I never said this before) I would play this song over and over again when I would pick up my daughter from daycare and tell a 2 years old that “this is our song”.. “To let you know I won’t let go of you” that line kills me every time. I would never leave my daughter no matter how hard it gets. I love you baby like you have no idea. This song couldn’t have come out a better time for me. Thank you RA. Thank you so much.

this is what i could find: “When you hear it you might hear a kind of classic love-and-loss-like love song…but the song actually is about becoming a parent,” explained singer Tim McIlrath on the “2 Hours With Matt Pinfield” podcast. “I like to think I have the world figured out, once you throw a 13-year-old daughter your way you realize, I have nothing figured out. And this is an incredible challenge that’s at the same time worth it.”

When I was a little kid his intentions were to work far from home, so that we could gain enough money to mantein our family, but since he's the most special person in my life, it was so hard for me. I remember him arguing so hard with my mother, a lot of times. But in the end we both grew up, and I was finally able to cuddle him again. I like to think of this song as our main theme :)

To those who don't feel it like such: Take this as a lesson that sometimes your father will go through hell to keep you safe. No matter how estranged you two might be, no matter how long it's been. Love is a powerful tool. Even if nowadays it isn't something that all that common. I know not everyone can have the same story as this but it's a good allegory for what a father should be, no matter the relationship.
