In China, many children go to nursery schools at the age of 2, most go to kindergartens at 4, 100% go to primary and secondary schools at 6 or 7. I don't know what is the case in India. I think that makes a big difference.

But quality of education matter.. in china govt focus on schools with quality and giving free education with common local language But in india there are different states.. for example: if you take south india which is more developed than any other part of India has 5 different states each with different languages one state people can’t understand other state people language. Everything in China are orderly, every city are clean and spotless, their internal transportation system is top notch. I am from India and truly admit China is light years ahead of us. According to me there are 3 major problems why we are behind. 1. Bad government policies that is corruption, too much bureaucracy especially this current Modi/BJP government trying to divide the country on the basis of religion. 2. China is bearing the fruits of great leadership by Deng Xiaoping who made bold moves and opened the Chinese economy. India too had great leaders like P.V. Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh unfortunately they both had coalition governments and did not have long enough tenures to completely implement their visions. This current Narinder BJP government was given a thumping mandate both in 2014 and 2019 with clear majorities, they could have accomplished anything and made structural changes to the economy. Instead of propaganda such as good governance, removing unnecessary bureaucracy, smart cities, bullet trains, sab ka saath sabka vikas, startup India, make in India, This PRime minister Narinder and (B.J.P) turned out to be complete frauds. He only has Muslim, Mutton, Mangalsutra and Mujhra in his heart. This will be remembered as the lost decade of our great nation. It is sad we could have at least closed the gap with China economically instead the gap has widened even more. Until we have structural changes in the economy starting with education, infrastructure, two child policy (reduction in population), removal of quota system, removal of income tax, incentives for companies to open factories in India and creating jobs, opening of technical schools/colleges to develop skilled labour, removal of all freebies, extensive financial and taxation help to Indian companies and most importantly improvement in judiciary and execution for the safety of citizens and companies alike nothing really is going to propel us to complete with China or for that case any of the top Asian economies.

We must come out of imaginations and only speak of what we have done. NOT WHAT WE ARE GOING TO DO. Compared to China the quality,quantity and cleanliness of infrastructure in India is way behind. It takes very long to complete even this mediocre quality of infrastructure. Hygiene, cleanliness and orderliness is also way behind. Very difficult to improve. Our people are very huge in number, severely divided along caste lines, totally undisciplined (e,g, jump signal even when the light is red, spitting and littering around, parking vehicles anywhere) and in general talk a lot and don't work hard (low productivity).Law enforcement is very weak / non existent & ridden with corruption.However, the fact remains that China is not a preferred destination for immigration. Not heard of significant nos. of people moving in and settling in China. All , including Chinese prefer to go to west.

The worst ideals of democracy is organized labor strikes. Labor unions are always on strike, you never know if the buses and trains are running because some labor group is on strike. Once you take Indians out of this failing system and put them in the West or some foreign country, Indians thrive economically. Hindu v. Here is a bit of history for you folks. Munger is spot on. The British colonized India in the 19th century. They got the Indians to grow poppy in India, shipped the opium to China and brought about the downfall of the Chinese which eventually led to the infamous war of Nanking and the humiliation of the Chinese. The subsequent peace treaty enforced on the Chinese led to the ceding of Hong Kong to the British for 100 years which lapsed in 1997. China never forget the humilation by Western powers. The relationship between the state and society in China is very different to that in the West. Contrary to the overwhelming Western assumption that the Chinese state lacks legitimacy and is bereft of public support, in fact the Chinese state enjoys greater legitimacy than any Western state. We have come to assume that the legitimacy of the state overwhelmingly rests on the democratic process - universal suffrage, competing parties et al. But this is only one element: if it was the whole story, then the Italian state would enjoy a robust legitimacy rather than the reality, a chronic lack of it. And to explain this we have to go back to the Risorgimento as only a partially fulfilled project. The reason why the Chinese state enjoys a formidable legitimacy in the eyes of the Chinese has nothing to do with democracy but can be found in the relationship between the state and Chinese civilization. The state is seen as the embodiment, guardian and defender of Chinese civilization. Maintaining the unity, cohesion and integrity of Chinese civilization - of the civilization-state - is perceived as the highest political priority and is seen as the sacrosanct task of the Chinese state. Of course, in reality the Han were a product of many different races, but the Han do not think of themselves like that. We will never make sense of China if we persist in treating it as if it is, or should be, a product of our own civilization. For India the topic of how strong the foundation is more important than how tall the building is. The debate to keep the foundation strong actually takes more time, that's all. The prime example of India's resilience is that its GDP growth rate never fell below 5% during 2009 global recession or during Corona period, but China's did. Also, India neither compared itself with China even when it achieved its first green revolution while Chinese were dying of hunger, nor now when China's dollar-based nominal GDP figures are much higher than India. It just that the western analysts loves to think that either you are on our side or other side, and if you are on other side then lets compare every one on the side with a single criteria. As Jaishankar said, India is simply standing on its own ground, using its 7000 years old civilizational learnings, most of its time and resources for rebuilding its damaged foundation. These old fellas are not old enough to judge something at a large civilizational scale. Such type of debate is completely biased as long as media is not free in China and the outside world doesn't have the holistic image of China. The west will soon learn what will save them during their downtime, their historical high GDP figures or strong foundation.

Excellent program and well reasoned analysis however I believe that this program under estimated the effects of effective governance on economic growth. Instead this program emphasized the effective use of the human capital as the major contributor of the different economic growth speed between India and China. Many commentators bemoan the fact that India's infrastructure is far behind that of China and prevents India from achieving faster economic growth. What they fail to explain to the viewers is that China's wide spread infrastructure investment, development and high utilization came from years of effective planning and effective execution - "results of effective governance".
