Rishi Sunak refusing to rule out July general election

Rishi Sunak has again refused to rule out a July general election, amid speculation that a disastrous set of local elections results, this coming Thursday, could force his hand.
The Prime Minister said he would not “say anything more" than he had already said, which is that the national poll is likely to be in the second half of the year.
But poor council results could either lead to a challenge to his leadership, or persuade him that an earlier polling day may be better than limping on with a divided party.

We did. January 2025. If he hasn't called for one by then, it becomes mandatory. The part that makes no sense to me is the fact they can arbitrarily call for an early election to coincide with events that will make them look good (or more to the point, less nefarious). I also think that any crime committed in office which they are convicted of, should carry the considerable likelihood of an accompanying charge of High Treason, as they bring profound dishonour and discredit to the noblest duty - service to one's country, and bring the office and position into disrepute. As it currently stands, the motivation and purpose of government are profoundly misaligned, that misalignment representing the concept of corruption. The system incentivises corruption, and both passively and actively punishes those with the integrity to resist corruption - and that innate conflict of interest is the cause of the systemic, symptomatic greed we observe. I'm not an organisational-restructuring expert, but there are plenty out there who could likely eliminate the majority of systemic corruption if given the genuine opportunity. The single most significant event which genuinely amazes me throughout the history of governance is --King-- / President George Washington refusing absolutism in favour of collegiate democracy. The next most significant is the related election of President Thomas Jefferson to the office in the year 1800 by the United States House of Representatives after no candidate received a majority of electoral college votes.

No. If they haven't called for an EARLY election, the Constitutionally mandated election will occur in January. They're just trying to figure out if calling an election early will mean they're slightly less fucked than if they wait for the mandatory GE. The fact that they can arbitrarily decide to call an early election solely when it suits the party in power is the detail I find profoundly undemocratic.
