I am. I was going to comment to this effect myself. I'm astounded. Whether Rishi is lying through his teeth or genuinely stating he doesn't really use WhatsApp much - either way - I don't get why our government would be using WhatsApp for *any* official, most especially sensitive, communications. *If* it is the "appropriate" way to do it, surely backups should be enforced? I've worked in a number of private organisations where it's practically sackable for anyone to make internal business communications through tools such as WhatsApp. I just don't get it.

WhatsApp messages are stored in the cloud, not only locally. If I bought a new phone today and put the whatsapp app on it, all of my messages would be there when I logged back in. This isn't just a blatant lie, it's a technically illiterate lie. He'd have had to change whatsapp accounts with every phone swap for this to be true.

That's only if you enable the backup feature in Whatsapp. One of Whatsapp's biggest selling points is the end-to-end encryption, meaning the messages never even exist in any readable form anywhere except on the sender's and recipient(s)'s devices, unless one of those people choose to have them backed up to the cloud.

In fairness I've had a similar issue, especially when I borrowed somebody's spare phone for a few days whilst my phone was lost. You can only use a WhatsApp account on one phone at a time, and any photos or messages shared from the other phone will not transfer over to mine and vice versa.

A lack of use of texts and WhatsApp's seems to be a favourite ploy of Management. I can remember (as a nurse) being told that communication should be face-to-face rather than through email as it was considered more effective. In reality a reduction in the use of email, texts and WhatsApp messages removes hard evidence of discussions that have occurred otherwise it's a case of He said, She said. Sunak fails as a leader, fails as a liar and fails as a decent human being BUT he's first class as a Tory.

Politicians have a duty to protect this type of data. He knows this and he has civil servants within his team who would direct him to do so and how to do so. Saying 'I dont recall’ is a falsehood in my opinion, but it does not matter if he recalls things ornot, what matters is he was aware of his respomnbilities as a senior minister and that he knows he has access to advice as and when needed for ecactly this kind of matter.

True. I've worked in a few jobs where work business had only to be discussed through official and monitored text channels, with data protection given as the reason. Asking a colleague to check address details of an order for product etc ovwe facebook, whatsapp etc would have been likely an on-the-spot sacking offence. But talking casually about sending 100,000+ to an early grave to avoid having to manage the economy better, not a problem, apparently.

When the Police go to a wanted criminals home, getting the suspects phone in tact is even more important than arresting the suspect himself. This is because they can retrieve anything from that phone (and gain a full understanding of what has really gone on), then question the suspect and can compare what he says with what they have found on the phone. If they find out the suspect is lying, this can then be used as a `Provable lie` in court, in which case the suspect will be absolutely screwed over by the court. They can get those messages off their phones, but they are choosing not too. This is simply a show of strength from the establishment to show us its one rule for them and one rule for us. Parliamentary Privelage should not exist.

In fairness to the kid, I switched mine over and there was a screw up. I simple terms, all whatsapps were on phone A. When I did the switch, the phone looked at the whatsapps on Phone B and it mirrored that. I.e. It wiped all the messages on phone A and the WhatsApp back up didn't work 😡😡😡 That being said, I don't trust this guy in general

I've changed phones multiple times during this period, but retained my number throughout, and despite making almost no effect to specifically backup/save/recover historical WhatsApp messages - they appear to have been retained by default.

There is zero doubt in my mind, that as an aspiring PM that he was, he would have wanted to keep Whatsapp messages. Even if that IS true, that's shockingly incompetent. It's easy to backup messages on WhatsApp and restore to a new device. I don't believe for a second that IT wouldn't automatically do that for them with a government device.
