Walk around the island village Rishiri Island (Hokkaido) / A village built on the lava beach of Mt. Rishiri.
Mt. Rishiri, 1721m, floats on the Sea of Japan about 52km west of Wakkanai City. The mountain is Rishiri Island. The shape of the island is a simple circle, with towns and villages scattered around the road. The coast is made of lava-based rocks, creating a unique landscape, in contrast to Rebun Island, which has a gentle impression. As relatively large towns, there are Oshimari, Oniwaki, Kutsugata, Senhoshi, and small and medium-sized settlements in between. Risiri is derived from the Ainu word "Risiri (island with high mountains)".
Motodomari
Rishiri Island Oshidomari is the gateway to Rishiri Island, along with Kutsugata. Each has a ferry terminal and an airport in between. There is Rishiri Shrine in Oshidomari, which is also the main starting point for climbing Mt. Rishiri. The town of Oshimari was formed on a hill running up from the coast, and unfortunately no remarkable townscape was found (Oshimari had a big fire in 1954). Before and after the Motodomari fishing port, which is located a few kilometers west of Oshimari, you can see a unique landscape of fishing villages with houses and huts scattered on the beach made of lava. In the village of Cape Fuji, lava is used to make a pool for each boat, and there is a boat shop corresponding to each. Rebun Island can be seen over the sea, and it can be said that it is a fishing village unique to Rishiri Island, a volcanic island.
Oniwaki
Rishiri Island became modern, and in the 11th year of the Meiji era, six villages were set up: Oshimari, Ishizaki, Oniwaki, Senhoshi, Kutsugata, and Motodomari. Although the Rishiri handling office was set up in Oshimari, Rishiri Elementary School was opened in Oniwaki in 1890, and 17 crab canning factories were opened in 1890, making it one of the best cities in the island. In that sense, Oniwaki can feel the history of the old buildings and private houses of the old government office (both the eagle stay and Kutsugata were in the postwar fire).
Senhoshi
Herring fishing on Rishiri Island has been practiced since the Edo period. From April to May, a large flock of spring squirrels arrive from Hokkaido to Sakhalin on the Japanese coast for spawning. On Rishiri Island, migrant fishermen called "Yanshu" gathered from the Tohoku and Hokuriku regions of Honshu, and in the spring it was very crowded with herring fishing. However, in 1956, the herring did not come and the herring fishing on Rishiri Island was over. Senhoshi, located in the southwest of the island, is also one of the prosperous towns for herring fishing. Rhythmic gabled streets can be seen in Honmachi and Motomura, but the exterior materials for the roof walls are new due to the harsh winter areas. There was a clapboard townscape in the village on the hill of Motomura, and an old private house that looked like an inn in Honmachi.
