I like the long videos. Its not that difficult to skip to the parts someone wants to see if needed, but it's great to see the whole process for newcomers.

Good point and thank you for the feedback! Even though I'm not a complete noob, I still enjoy a full paint through on other channels :D Not a live painting session though, those take too long :P
@pauk.w6 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, the speeding up helps - no one needs to see every stroke. But seeing every stage is reassuring, seeing how each layer contributes and comes together. Even simple things like highlighting and washes can be intimidating to newcomers so it's good to see the technique in each stage without skipping seemingly obvious steps.
@TheKingofAverage6 жыл бұрын
Totally agree :) I've seen videos where too much was skipped and the mini magically gets way more painted lol

I like the whole process as well. I understand it's more work for you, but it's helpful to see a skilled painter at work since I'm a little interested in doing some myself (I just play with the unpainted/raw miniatures)
@TheKingofAverage6 жыл бұрын
Well I'm unsure you'll see a skilled painter here, I have average in my name for a reason but that's the whole point of my channel! If I can do it then you can to! Watching painting videos on YT got me into the hobby and I started the channel because I always felt bad because so many channels on here are from people who have painted for 30 years, have art degrees and skill. I have none of those but still believe I produce decent results. You should try it sometime!

Another amazing video. I have done my own painting of Daikaiju based on your tutorial with some of my changes (like using Athonian camoshade for wash instead and alike) but I must say I am really happy with the result especially considering I started painting like 5 days ago for the first time in my life and never was an artistic person to begin with hehe. I will show my result and hopefully it inspires people to try it on their own, because as long as we have someone like you who is willing to teach us and guide us through steps it is quite amazing to see what you can do. So I would like to again thank you so much for this channel and especially for deciding on doing all the Rising sun miniatures, I will follow this with interest!

Thank you so very much for the kind words! I, like you have no artistic background and am just an "average" guy, which is the whole point of my channel. I'm the average board gamer and painter, so if I can do it you can too! I'l love to see pictures of your miniature! I debated for a really long time weather to add some green with the camoshade in there for a more "traditional" Godzilla. Congrats and welcome to painting! I find it really relaxing and rewarding and the board looks AMAZING with painted miniatures on it!

Awesome video! After completing the Daikaiju (which you nicely commented on Instagram🙂) this will be my second ever painted miniature. Now while progressing I am slowly adding some paints. Something that could be very helpfull for me would be the following: you use both Citadel paints and Villajo paints but in the overview of the colors I can’t see if it’s Citadel or Villajo. It would be very helpful for me if you would put a (C) or (V) behind the colors in the description. As I mentioned before, I would not reduce the length of your videos. Thank you again!

Ah, good idea. There is also an equivalence chart I'll post in the description.

I really like the format/length from this latest video. I especially appreciate how you show the areas you remove the flashing from. These videos are inspirational to me, as I plan to start painting my set next week. Keep up the good work. Would you mind doing a video that shows your painting station/desk set up?
@TheKingofAverage6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words Adam! I'm very glad you enjoyed the video! I do always try to include the removal of the mold lines. Too often I feel painters will remove them, show their painting and then everyone new wonders why there's doesn't look as good. On some miniatures it can be quite time consuming as well, and it's dishonest to only count the painting portion if you also had to prep the mini :) If you are up for it I'd love to see your miniatures as you paint them! YT is great for encouragement so don't be afraid to post a link to a pic! :D - As for the set up, I've had this requested often but I'd hate to have a "here's what not to do" video as I feel that's what it'd be. I paint on a janky laptop desk, with my paints splayed out across it and a camera in my face (because I record them) - not exactly an ideal setup! I'm moving in a couple months and will have an office there - perhaps if I improve my setup to where I think it would be helpful for others to see I will post it, thanks for the idea!

@Axolie6 жыл бұрын
Hey King, I have a question for you, I see you always try to match as good as possible the colors of your figurines as how they are initially designed on the cards, rulebook or art book. One of the monsters is Komainu. This mnster is in pure gold, which will make it probably quite easy to paint and mayby a little bit dull also. Would you eventually try to paint Komainu in a maybe slightly different or more varieted color scheme?
@TheKingofAverage6 жыл бұрын
Ah yes, I haven't had him on my schedule because I'm *hoping* to work up the courage to try and paint him via NMM which I've never done before. In case you aren't aware, NMM is NonMetalic Metal, where you paint with regular paints to look metallic - I think he'd look great like that and it'd make it much more interesting, however I've never done it before and feel I'd need a bit of practice first, but perhaps he'd actually be a good first model. Really just working up the courage! FYI, the one shown painted on the actual KS is painted via NMM, so something like that: www.kickstarter.com/projects/coolminiornot/rising-sun/posts/1840760

looking at this one next for me. I like what you did and agree with you on the cape. the handle/hilt of mine though is a little bent down and almost twisted slightly. how would I go about fixing that. it does bend easily in to the orientation it should be but I don't know if it will revert to the twisted, bent way or if there is a way to correct it permanently. any idea or thoughts?
@TheKingofAverage4 жыл бұрын
Easy fix actually! Just get some hot tap water (doesn't have to be boiling, but should be steamy hot) and let that part of the miniature sit in there a bit. Take it out and you'll find you can reposition the plastic to wherever you need it to go and it'll bend there fine. Once in the position you want, put it in some ice water and it'll be stuck in that position :)

Today I went for some paints today and Citadel does have a golden and kind of silver primer, think it was Leadbelcher and Retributor Armour. Talking about primers, is there a specefic reason you always (for those video’s I saw anyway) with a light grey primer?
@TheKingofAverage6 жыл бұрын
Yes there is actually. Since we are painting with thinned paints they are partially translucent. If I primed Black, then painting bright colors is VERY hard. If I primed white, then the models would come out a little brighter, and I prefer a bit more dark and less cartoony look to mine. Gray is a nice in between. You can always prime to help speed up painting, but I don't paint to go fast I paint to enjoy the hobby so that's not a big thing for me and therefore it's much easier for what I want to just say "everything is primed grey". When starting out, it can be helpful to prime in black as it tends to help cover up some mistakes by just looking at shadow, but it won't help at all if painting light colors no matter what. You pretty much just have to attempt painting yellow over black once to swear it off :P

Interesting that you use only one shade of red on that robe. Also, would a Carroburg Crimson wash work well instead of the nuln oil?
@TheKingofAverage6 жыл бұрын
I thought about doing a wet blend because the concept art sorta has that in it, but Adrian Smith doesn't create the art for painters but for sculptors. Love his art though! As for the wash, it could work but would provide a very different effect. I have an orange wash (red would work here too as well) that I use only for fire. If going for shadow you'd want a darker color, but could do a brown that would work. If I did this again I'd use the Seraphim Sepia on the red parts as well. It's a light brown with some orange hues that would blend fantastically with it.
@bertilicious6 жыл бұрын
Long videos are the best because you learn the most from watching the videos... You don't have to show everything but detail work is good! You could try doing something like sorastro, where you can film only certain parts but more like a tutorial. that'd be cool, anyway liking your videos!!! i can't wait to paint my Rising Sun!! keep it up
@TheKingofAverage6 жыл бұрын
I've thought about that, but I've always personally enjoyed seeing the whole model painted. Glad you enjoy them thank you! Wow. Great! Thanks for the tip. I definitley will try those. I have only used Gesso so far and am not sure about it yet. I bought Blood Rage a couple of months ago.... and of course they MUST be painted. So now I am learning to paint. Rising Sun kickstarter version comes in the mail tomorrow. So as a beginner. I am trying to practice as much as possible before tackling those. I can see that I might want to learn to spray prime to tackle the mini that you are working on here.
@TheKingofAverage6 жыл бұрын
It will certainly be cheaper and faster to print that way :) congrats on getting RS soon!
@BandaInku6 жыл бұрын
Dude Blood Rage is a fantastic place to start painting minis! Lots of opportunity to try various techniques! If you're still looking for a good brush on primer I highly recommend Vallejo's Polyurethane primers. (Black - amzn.to/2A86nZu, Grey - amzn.to/2gW5yKF) Particularly the black one. Though be warned you don't want to use your nice brushes for this cuz it does kind of beat them up. I primed all of my Arcadia Quest minis with those primers and continue to use them on practically all my minis. The grey works decent with a brush but really shines when used with an airbrush. They've also got a bunch of colored ones that I have yet to try but I'm sure work great!

hey man for holders ive been mounting my minis on TAMIYA paints with Plasticine for years or pill bottles. for minis the size of the one in the vid i find the cap of a spray can works well ..see pic (you can also mount them with a dab of super glue you can pop it off with a knife or twist it off) for LARGE minis i glued the top of a jar of peanut butter onto a pill bottle (see spider pics). as a side note if anyone's is using TAMIYA paints you can till use the paints as well , some people have ask me if its hard to clean the Plasticine so i put in some pic of me taking one off ..you could go in with and old brush if you wanted to clean it a bit more, i find its best to fill the bottles you use with something Plasticine/sand/water ..or in the case of my peanut butter /pill bottle thing just some thumb tacks.. this will help it from falling over. i also put in some pics of mounting med/large base with Plasticine , i also used this back in the day when warmachine models were metal so nearly any size plastic mini shouldn't be a problem , hope that helps...i for one like the long videos, i can put them on while i paint s1376.photobucket.com/user/De_Liquid_Death_GEN/slideshow/paint%20handles

@TheKingofAverage6 жыл бұрын
You are talking about the strands in the front that go over his armor? I can understand that. It's an important skill to have however, as you'll come across tons of belts, straps, and other long skinny bits of detail over other stuff, and generally you want to paint from deepest depth to highest, so you're painting over finished paint :) Just brace your arms against the table and go slowly without much paint in your brush. If you are still wanting to change the color (because black is the most difficult if you mess up here) you could try a dark gray and slap some Nuln Oil on it. If you did that you might also want to change the color of the skulls from a gray to a more normal bone color. If you wanted to keep the gray skulls then perhaps a dark brown such as Rhinox Hide would work well.

For the highlight of silver and brass what did you do? just water diluted paint?
@TheKingofAverage6 жыл бұрын
In this instance no, since I covered it in the shade, using the regular, non-diluted paint puts it back where it was and sine the rest is darkened, then that's my highlight. If I were to highlight it some more, then I would need to dilute a brighter metallic color.

would the AP greedy gold work instead of the brass? great video man.
@TheKingofAverage6 жыл бұрын
Really glad you liked the video! I think it would work just fine and make it really pop. Because it's a bit more orange I would think about swapping out the wash from Seraphim Sepia to Reikland Fleshshade. It's a slightly draker brown but still with a tint of orange and I think the darker portion would help blend the silver with the orangeish gold. Then highlight as normal to really bring out that silver and you'll be left with a nice dark but muted shadow bit around the armor trim.

Thank you for the kind words and welcome! I'm very glad you enjoyed the video! Right now my goal is to in fact paint all of the miniatures. Can't promise anything but that's the goal/hope in us all right? :D I do actually plan to have a separate video for each miniature sculpt (so the 3 Shinto of a tribe would get a single video of just one of them) as I tend to go into enough detail that my videos are already longer than some other painter's. Any video that involves a Kickstarter Exclusive miniature is marked on the thumbnail (like my previous video the Daikaiju) so you'll know if it's applicable to you or not. That being said I have them planned out and I don't paint another KS exclusive miniature until mid March.

Oh exciting! You happy with how he turned out? The inside of anything is rough with pre-built miniatures for sure. The hair with skulls though take the cake! The detail just sorta blurs at that point and you kind of have to paint and pray, then touch up and pray some more :D
@lokihve65916 жыл бұрын
Yeah I guess I am. The differences in colouring and what not were from the top of my head. I used Brass Scorpion, I used Reikland Fleshshade (I dont have the shade or the Brass you used so I improvised) and I actually decided to use Leadbelcher for the outter blade and Blood for the Blood god to draw some blood on that but decided to keep it as clean as possible, just before doing Oni of Spite I was colouring Yurei monster and there I used Blood for the Blood god more openly with trying to do some splattering effect and "blood pools" All and all I am quite happy with the result the two parts where maybe I would have wished for more are (this time I actually didnt use liquid green stuff so you can imagine that especially at the hair part in the back that is gonna show so ouch for that and I am not happy with how the eyes turned out, would have wished for more similar look to your actually (I dont have Ivory so I was trying to used some kind of bone colour + dots of evil sun scarlet) heh

I appreciate the feedback! It's not a terrible difference, this video clocked in at about 4 hours of edit time which isn't terrible (I've had worse). While length does add to the time, the amount of paints used and overall complexity of the paint job factor into it as well. Now, I might be singing a different tune after a long *and* complex video, but so far it's not too bad :D
@rosenkazakov99146 жыл бұрын
Army painter brushes are absolute, utter garbage. I have 6 $ brushes that lasted longer and are better quality than army painter. Their paints are also the worst when compared to citadel or vallejo paints.
@TheKingofAverage6 жыл бұрын
I agree with some of these. I'd group Army Painter Bridges within the < $10 group and have found them to be good workhorse brushes. That being said, I do clean them after almost every paint session. As for the paints, it depends. I really dislike citadel pots, and find their whites terrible. I've never been a Vallejo paint I didn't like, and I love some of the army painter colors but find them more difficult to mix properly.
