Some people find trot diagonals confusing - I remember I did. I hope this video helps to alleviate some of that confusion. BTW I had to film over 2 days - one was beautiful and the other it rained! Thanks for watching

The thing that always confused me is what to call them. Both diagonals include a left leg and a right leg, so I never could tell which diagonal my instructor was asking for. (Dyspraxic brain, I had a similar issues when learning to drive a car, ended up going the wrong way quite a few times!) So am I correct in saying that if the left hind and right front on the ground is the one I should be sitting on, that's called the left diagonal because the left hind leg is the one we are thinking about (weight wants to be on that leg)? You've helped me understand the reasoning behind the diagonals with this video which is really great, thank you!
@BasicHorseTraining
@BasicHorseTraining 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Leila, Your query made me question my answer! So I went off and did a little research and it appears I am wrong (and not for the first time in my life 😆). When talking about diagonals the books state that we should refer to the outside shoulder. So if they say left diagonal they mean sitting with the left front hoof. This to me is completely counter-intuitive as it is the right hind leg we are actually targeting in this instance. This is why people don't understand why we are doing it but who am I to argue with the books. Just remember that you need to sit on the inside hind leg and then you will always be correct and not have to worry about right and left. I'm sorry if I have confused you even more as that wasn't my intention 😕. I will remove my other comment here so I don't confuse anyone else.
@mahurutanga
@mahurutanga 2 ай бұрын
I prefer your way of thinking about it Jose because it’s more from the horse’s comfort and long term soundness pov which I really resonate with. Get the books to change 🤣

I sit in the dressage saddle not correctly. my leg is constantly going forward to the girth. Help me to fix it.
@BasicHorseTraining
@BasicHorseTraining 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on what is causing your leg position problem. It could be anything from an incorrectly fitting saddle (tipping you backwards/forwards) to a stiffness/balance issue in your body. I would need to see it to be able to help you with your particular problem. I will link to a video I did on exercises to help your balance and they may help you 🙂. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGXWipKOiN52asU

You will never believe this but I have been riding for well over 30 years, yes over 30 and I STILL never know which diagonal I am on. It's madness I know, and I know how to check but the fact is I am never sure whether I am rising or sitting when the outside shoulder is going forward. I can't even see it in your video!! I can sit for two easily enough but I have to be told I am wrong (most of the time). I always think I have no "feelage", should I just give up?
@BasicHorseTraining
@BasicHorseTraining 2 жыл бұрын
You rise when the outside shoulder is going forward so if you can see it going forward then you have got this Susan. Also, take a little pressure off yourself as unless you are doing high-level dressage it's not the end of the world if you post on the wrong diagonal. You've got this! 😊

@BasicHorseTraining
@BasicHorseTraining 3 жыл бұрын
You sit in the saddle when the inside hind leg is stepping on the ground. You rise out of the saddle when it is coming off the ground. Because the diagonal front leg is in the same motion as the inside hind (the legs work in diagonal pairs in trot) you can watch the outside front leg/shoulder to see where it is. Does that help?
