Risk Bites

Күн бұрын

A short introduction to nanotechnology, and why you should care about it.
The video dives into materials science and advanced materials, and looks at how designing and engineering substances from the atoms they're made of upward allows novel properties to be developed and used. It also looks at responsible innovation when it comes to grappling with the benefits as well as the health and environmental risks of nanoparticles and nanomaterials.

Sarif was right about one thing. It's in our nature to want to rise above our limits. Think about it. We were cold, so we harnessed fire. We were weak, so we invented tools. Every time we met an obstacle, we used creativity and ingenuity to overcome it. The cycle is inevitable... but will the outcome always be good? I guess that will depend on how we approach it. These past few months, I was challenged many times, but more often than not, didn't I try to keep morality in mind, knowing that my actions didn't have to harm others? Time and time again, didn't I resist the urge to abuse power and resources simply to achieve my goals more swiftly? In the past, we've had to compensate for weaknesses, finding quick solutions that only benefit a few. But what if we never need to feel weak or morally conflicted again? What if the path Sarif wants us to take enables us to hold on to higher values with more stability? One thing is obvious. For the first time in history, we have a chance to steal fire from the gods. To turn away from it now - to stop pursing a future in which technology and biology combine, leading to the promise of a Singularity - would mean to deny the very essence of who we are. No doubt the road to get there will be bumpy, hurting some people along the way. But won't achieving the dream be worth it? We can become the gods we've always been striving to be. We might as well get good at it. - Deus Ex Human Revolution

This is a fantastic explanation of what nanotechnology actually is! Most videos just explain what it does or how it can be used. It's quick and to the point, and I really liked the animation and the audio too. I only wish it also explained how scientists have become to good at creating this nanotechnology. What do they use to build/alter these molecules?

Nicely done, as always. Regarding the evaluation of the technology, the concepts of benefits, unintended consequences and intentional misuse should be applicable to any technology. Do you agree? Are there things that are unique to nanotech that are not applicable to other technologies?
@riskbites
@riskbites 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Shaun, yes - while nanotech is the focus of this video, those broader questions can be applied to pretty much any emerging field I think - there;s nothing special about nanotech beyond it leading to capabilities that we don't have much prior experience with (which also holds true in many other areas).
@SocietyInside
@SocietyInside 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Shaun, yes, as Andrew says the issues are not unique to nano, in fact many of them are identical to many different strands of tech and innovation - though often they change on a product by product basis. This is beginning to be known as Responsible Innovation - we are now working in nano, synbio, robotics, GM, AI and others to learn cross technology lessons. If you are interested here are our draft Principles for Responsible Innovation for businesses - www.matterforall.org/principles-for-responsible-innovation-january-2016/

We've been throwing the word "nanotechnology" around for decades yet, despite only our bests effort, we are only inching closer to that molecular-scale frontier when in fact we should be racing towards it. In the decades to come, the enhanced beings -- post humans who are our progeny -- will look at the mechanical devices we rudely bolted onto our living flesh or buried inside our grey matter, and they will mock us for our crudity. They will look upon what we have made with the same curiosity, the same disinterest, as the pilot of a veetol aircraft would look upon an ox cart. The future of human augmentation lies in the small - in fact, the smallest. In the next thirty years, the molecular frontier will be broken and true nano-scalar programming and biological reorientation will be possible. There will be no tedious instances of severing limbs to replace them with steel proxies. We will drink in these tiny machines, inject them - and be transformed. - Deus Ex Human Revolution

@@Stroyer123 A) I do not intend hostility. B) How? From my understanding, nanotechnology is a bunch of tiny machines that can change matter on a molecular level or at least close to that, that sounds incredibly dangerous if it ever got out of control. C) Are you referring to yourself as this student?
@Stroyer123
@Stroyer123 3 жыл бұрын
 @ERROR 404 Neither did I, sorry if my reply sounded harsh in anyway. Without meaning any offence, your understanding is very wrong. Nanotechnology simply deals with any technology at the nano scale (usually in the 1-100s nm). We cannot create machines at this size. It is physically impossible. A good example of nanotechnology would be the mRNA vaccine, which utilises mRNA (which is usually at the scale of 2-300 nm). This mRNA is used to induce an immune response in the receiver, allowing for immunity against whatever disease the mRNA is manipulated from. This is a branch of nanotechnology called nanobiotechnology. Another branch is nanophysics, which is often more technical and theoretical, but an example would be how we utilise carbon nanotubes (which are usually 0.4-40 nm in diameter) to make stain-resistant materials. We also utilise silver nanoparticles in many products due to their antibacterial and antiviral properties. Like I said, it is physically impossible to create machines at this size. The smallest made robots are the size of a rice grain, I believe, which are completely impossible to put into the body in any way. And yes, I study nanotechnology for a living. If you have any questions, then please feel free to ask!

@Stroyer123 3 жыл бұрын
@@irishspartanstudios No worries! It's a very niche field of science, and it is often demonised, because people do not know, what it is. I'm not saying there's no danger in it. There is potential for danger in all branches of natural science, but I do not think one is much more inherently dangerous than the others. Nanotech has incredible potential, and is - in my biased opinion - probably one of the most important fields of natural science in this day and age. Thanks! Hopefully I'll be able to bring something incredible to humanity like my fellow scientists before me!
