I know this comment isn't about this video or dashing but as I've written it for somewhere else, it's only a matter of a quick copy/paste. Rendering the top half of a wooden framed extension- did the scratch coat on one part and the builder wanted me to top coat it the next day. I told him no, it's got to be left so it can crack/allow for cracking if it's going to. He insisted on me doing it so the scaffold could be taken down. Looked lovely when I'd finished only to have to go back to repair cracks all over the place which left it looking like a patchwork quilt. It ended up getting covered in Sandtex Hi-Build to cover everything up. I was on day work for him so didn't lose financially (actual gained by doing the repairs) but that's not the point. At least the customer understood it wasn't my fault.

Jasper admitted he wasn’t expecting to get the whole thing topped, rather than the chancy way this went on, I was more worried about slump on those blocks as Geoff said. I think this video is a good example of what can be done with an experienced team working well together, pushing forward , dropping back to help each other, watching the job, no egos, jaspers job, jasper has to honour it, he calls the shots and if you don’t back the calls and work together you can get in trouble. Communication all day long. It was a good day. Went back on Monday, had a sniff about. All looks very secure to me, not drying too fast as temp is just right to give it chance to cure before drying out. And remember, that scratch had gritty sharp sand in it. That’s for screeding floors. That’s going to struggled to shrink back.

I think we're mostly agreed that isn't how to do it properly. "Risky gamble"- Yes. Leave the scratch coat-Yes. I might have risked a very small panel with a soft scratch coat but not a big area like that. However, I don't think it will fail, not on those blocks. Time will tell. Biggest risk was the whole lot slumping which it didn't. Water-proofner wouldn't have hurt though, at least in the scratch coat. Good use of the hawk to give a gentle push though. I quite liked dashing- at least you don't have to wait for the top coat to be hard enough to rub up, just not so wet that it all slides down under it's own weight. 🙂

Quite a good idea getting the second coat on to a green scratch! Gets that second coat on nice and tight so nothing sags when dashing.

I know a lot of folk will SCREAM! FOUL!! at this - But Pre-Angle bead days when all reveals were 'formed' using Skirting or Floor-Board Profiles ... When we 'returned the Reveals' we would put a handful of plaster {Siraphite or Thistle Board Finish} into a barrowload of S&C ... This sent the render off pretty sharp and We could Knock-Off the profiles in about 15mins .... The same with Pebble-Dash ... Because prices were TIGHT! ... We would do the same on the scratch coat .... It meant we could get back on it as quickly as necessary 'without' the fear of it sliding ... The jobsworths used to moan and come up with all sorts of STAT's WHY! We shouldn't do it ... But I NEVER had any FAILS ... And drive past jobs done 30-40 years ago ... Still doing fine 🤠 .... They've left a very nice dash there 👍🙂

Oh no Pete, you've triggered another flashback and I haven't even watched this video yet!! The seraphite in s/c trick- dad taught me that. One day, (on my own) on site work, to fill out the 'front' of all the lintels in a new build bungalow to be able to take the angle bead (head), I decided it was going to take so much s/c I'll mix it up in the mixer with a shovel full of seraphite chucked in the mix. All good, filled all the lintels out and the gear is going off nicely. What I didn't think of was that as much as the gear in the lintels was going off, so was what was left in the mixer! My heart sunk when i realised what an idiot I'd been. Had to clean the mixer out with a hammer! Well, I was young then!!

How big a area would you render on your own before it goes off to much to finish 5m x 5m or more or less
@GeoffAnderson-l5d

I've gone right across the front of a longish bungalow totally on my own, mixing...everything but to be honest, I have no idea what the actual meterage was!! It was a hard day though. Also gone top to bottom of half of a gable end (there was an expansion joint; with out that, I'd never attempted it on my own) but I had someone, not mixing but helping get the gear up the top. I did that on a hot day and applied the 'rolling set' method, I had no choice. Put some on, rule, put more on rule, go back and float, more on, back and sponge.... I've got photos of the top completely finished while the bottom bit has only just been ruled. Not a joint in sight! Keeping the edge going is the hard bit. I don't think I've ever actually measured the area as most of the time I was on a day rate for builders and just did it like that- worked flipping hard some days making them money and took it easier on other days!! 5m X 5m sounds doable but it depends on what's in the way, access, just a 'straight run' or fiddly window drip angles. The problem is this time of year, you could easily put it on and it might be dark by the time it's ready to rub. One job, I scratch coated, clocks went back and I top coated 4 months later as I wasn't going to put a big hit on and try to rub it up in the dark or with lights. At least it had plenty of time to settle! I'm sure other's here will have done big hits on their own but it's not just putting it on. Same as any job- mixing, loading out clearing up.

There are so many things that effect times with render, sand cement. If you want the most amount of time, scratch with sbr admixture. Leave 4 days, then top coat, throw stones. Sbr in scratch left to cure will make the top coat hang for absolutely ages.

Surely all that material at that depth is going to shrink and crack.
@Plastersmurf74

It’s possible, but the shape in the scratch should reduce that and the lower temperature should allow it to cure before it dries. Like I say in the title, a risky pebble dash, I was more concerned about it slumping . But it’s up. Checked it today, it’s looking ok.

I hope not as well. I’m thinking jaspers logic of putting a gritty sharp sand mix in the scratch will counteract that. We went back to that job today , was working inside but I had a sniff about and looked at it again. Looks ok, still quite water bound, I’m thinking the lower temperature will give it time to cure without drying out too fast. I’m confident it’s going to hold. But totally agree, breaking the rules!

@ I agree, this is shown as a success. Jasper is the guy who taught me. I’m 50, he is 60. My 1st days work plastering was with him when I was 13. I have always, joked and others agree with me who have worked for jasper how obsessed with plastering he is. He is a real Gordon Ramsey type character at work. I wouldn’t have chanced this. I thought its would slump. But no, it worked, it was right on the edge. Render and sharp in the scratch, render and soft in the top. Jasper laboured the mixer and dashed. Shae loaded , rob and I laid on. Team work made this happen. I can’t see why it would fail in a couple of years but time will tell I guess. For a same day result I probably would have used the bagged ocr stuff. Like I say, I’m just showing what happened. I like to be honest. If I hear of this job failing I’ll will be sure to report it here. The builder is a regular customer of jasper’s and if an issue does occur, I’m sure it will be addressed. But as of yet. No issues reported. 👍

@@Plastersmurf74 So many issues with this . The scratch coat not even dry and its getting top coated and dashed . The scratch coat should be allowed to dry and pull in as cracking will occur plus waslime used in the mix? . Wont stop on im afraid.

If I was in charge of this job I would have scratched with sbr additive , ideally leave a good couple of days for that sbr to properly starting kicking in and killing suction then integral waterproofer in top coat for its plastercising advantages. The next day on Sunday I sat down and watched the new top gun maverick , reminded me of doing this job. 😀👍. Went back to that job Monday. It’s looking solid and the low temps are stopping it from drying too fast and giving it a good chance to cure.
