Rita was a pretty feminist character for a female character in a 60's comic. She lead the team at some points and she would ditch Mento, who wanted her to quit being a superhero and become a 24/7 wife for her team. Rita was also taken seriously by her team and she was the muscle of the Doom Patrol and fought giant monsters. Meanwhile in Fantastic Four and Avengers you had Sue and Janet being the token girls in the team who always fell for cute guys and had to be rescued or ridiculed for being women.
