For me, some of the stuff Queen did on their first 3 albums still sounds as alive and exciting today as it did back then. The stuff that they did a few years later, and they get lauded for, is a load of dross. To my ears, anyway.

I agree apart from I'd also add A Night at the Opera also. The guitar work on Queen, Queen ll and Sheer Heart Attack is extraordinary. Brian May is a big admirer of Richie. We were certainly blessed with British guitarists and band's dyring the late 60's and 70's. Great times for rock music.

Well its a different style, but never did they lack experimentation or musicality, they kept true to being profound musicians but found a way to mold that into different styles. I recommend listening to Innuendo, their last album non-posthumous, it goes back to the prog rock roots of the band but after years and years experimentation and upgraded sound quality

3 chords - yeah, ZZ Top (good though they are) is the intellectual limit of most Americans. I suspect with Queen their US success was an element of curiousity on how British bands could be so original and creative. Remember - all the best bands are British.

Status Quo were never prepared to put in the hard work and tour relentlessly in order to crack the USA. Best comparison is AC/DC - both Quo and AC/DC play straightforward rock, both had big success in the UK and Australia in the 1970s, both had a lot of hard-rock fans that liked both bands, only AC/DC put in the hard yards in the USA market and they made it huge whereas Quo are hardly known in the states.
@michaelkarlsson5966
@michaelkarlsson5966 2 жыл бұрын
@@jjjddd231 that is not the whole truth. If I remeber it correctly Francis Rossi explains in his book (I talk too much) that the main reason for Status Quo not breaking the Us is because radiostations refused to play their songs. It's more complex than that and I don't remember the details of his explaination but that is the main thing according to him. They have played the US but it wasn't worth to really work it because they already had Europe and other parts of the world and risked losing the momentum they had there.

@@atlasgunther8947 ok. I agree with you of course Bohemian Rhapsody has sold a lot through the years, no doubt. So why did they change then? For me, the logic says, they either changed to survive in the 80s or they changed because they wanted to change. Possibly a mix of both 🙂 Just to be clear: I prefer the early Queen but I like the later too, especially the "Innuendo" album. I also think it's good for bands/artists to try new things/develop. May not always be to my liking but staying the same (or trying to stay the same) must be difficult.

I'm glad Queen didn't have to apologise to you for 2/3 of their career. The way you put it would seem like you are speaking for the majority of the fans. It may have not been your taste but that's about all that can be said about it. Queen fans loved the band all the way through and still do. 'Dumped their fans?......' You have absolutely no idea!

Thinking back to the 70's and early 80's as rock fans none of us thought of Queen as a rock band where I was in the North East, you wouldn't be headbanging to a Queen song in the Mayfair on a Friday night, they were more of a pop/rock band really to us, in the 80's they'd lost traction and then Live Aid came along and the rest is history.
@AlbertoJorgeSoares

In the seventies they weren't pop/rock. More likely a progressive/hard rock band. They went to pop/rock in the eighties.
