The High Priest tells her to shove it in their faces to make them accept why a commoner would be given the blue robes so she figures she can go all out and pour in as much mana as possible, opening the lid of the box she puts her mana in and letting it run through her body, with the mana seeking the staff as an outlet.

not...really. Like 95% of the devoured children barely have enough mana to qualify as low ranked nobles. Myne is completely irregular. She's only survived that long because of that whole soul coming from another world and that absurdly strong obsession for a goal (books) helping her to keep in check her own mana, as well as the usage of a magical item one year prior.

Whether the sick and poor don't rank up as low nobles is not really relevant: a low-level mage still has an advantage over a normal, no matter how meager. Plus, not dying is always a benefit. I will concede, however, that Myne/Main's soul-linking exceptionality as well as her *utmost determination* to become a librarian grants her a strength of will that few possess in the setting.

If they do that, in few DECADES, there will be more Mages from commoners than Nobles even if only small % become a mage. That would usurp the power of Nobles and thus will not allow to happen.

@ Zefyris D Spoiler- in the LN the reason she is so powerful is because of all the times she nearly died and had to suppress the mana herself. It increased her potential. At best she would have been a laynoble level. So all that suffering wasn't for nothing. Nobles knew of this method but would never intentionally do it when they have magic tools on hand.

It’s always amusing to find that almost every new character (particularly non-evil nobles) will make the same observations about Myne’s appearance, usually about her hair and eyes, when meeting her for the first time. They see her glossy dark-blue hair as reminiscent of the sky after sunset and her golden eyes being like the moon, and often take these traits as evidence of the God of Darkness and Goddess of Light’s blessings. One of my favourite passages in the Light Novel is from the first Volume where just after Tuuli makes this observation, Myne starts contemplating how genetics must factor into these traits only to conclude that thinking about it would just be a waste of time. I’ve come to the conclusion that rather than being strictly genetic, a person’s hair/eye colours are often influenced their birth season and elemental affinities, respectively.

But a child with a matchbox can destroy an entire forest. Magic that can breathe life back into the world, that is a power all unto itself.

This is actually in my top 5 favorite anime now. The world building and characters are so well flushed out. I watched all of season 1 and 2 in 2 days. I could honestly watch this show all day every day at the pace they're going. This is the kind of story telling that I love for and I wish this was a 500 episode anime lol.

In the books there was the extra detail in that by "showing off" her immense mana pool, many on the Knights/Nobles were looking at her with predatory eyes during this scene as a breeding tool to be forced into some marriage or other to strengthen their family and position.

Even among the adults most would have been incapable of matching her levels at that point. they were looking at her like more of a powerful battery/mana tool really.

Out of context, this may seem like nothing. One would have to watch the show to truly comprehend how much this moment is earned. Even though the show promised fantasy elements from the start, it generally shied away from them to focus on more mundane concerns. The main draw of this series is its focus on the mundane...Myne bringing some of Japan's creature comforts to this world, her business, the social challenges of being a pseudo-noble priestess who's actually a commoner. It has been implied throughout that she's pretty powerful, the end of the first season makes that clear, but they don't wear it out like other isekai do. As a result, this moment is impactful. It's a culmination of two seasons while not CONSUMING those two seasons. This series has so much going for it, so many meaningful threads, that there is plenty left for Myne to do without focusing solely on fantastical elements. And that's why I love this isekai. It is like no other.

Wow just read the novel ahead the anime. Noble society is ultra dark and for all of their wealth and power they can die any second as the high city is the ultimate dog eats dog place. He was not threatening to cut her eyes he would have done so and the second he earned the ire of the archnoble he was done. Half of the nobles in the state just died due to infighting and it was nothing special - just a temporal inconvenience due to mana shortage.

I like the premise since it seems like nobility does not have so much mana anymore but same time the most prominent families became nobility largely BECAUSE they had vast amounts of mana in generations prior. You could say Myne is more of a noble by origin than most of the nobles alive despite lacking any pedigree. By the way some nobles react I would imagine her to be someone on par with royalty (esp reactions of our Blue Haired priest who likely met royalty 1st hand many times)... which arises many questions for them, many problems for her and oh so many possibilities for future. Nice writing overall~

@@dandare9055 Blue haired priest is the half brother of a noble and most other priests are at least the lowest status of nobility. The nobles of this world also commonly marry commoners with magic into their house holds, which probably contributes to their family lines retaining larger mana reserves over generations. This was touched on a bit with the pink haired granddaughter of the Merchants guild head who is to be married off to a noble to gain access to magic items that allow her to control the excess mana in her body.

This is also Ferdinand personally punishing Shikikoza-- bit of a spoiler, the junior knight doomed himself and put his family in serious trouble for what he did in the prior episode. Ferdinand knew the knight order would punish Shikikoza appropriately, but he wanted to wring out the stupid noble first in addition to getting the order on Myne's side.

Only Ascendance of a Bookworm could make the simple in concept task of using magic to (basically) make grass grow as impactful and entertaining as it is here. Like, really, can you think of any other anime that brings this much hype and importance to something another anime would use on a much smaller, humbler scale as an introduction to the idea of magic at all, let alone being the height of impressive magic feats? What a show. An absolutely perfect display to round out the anime's second season. This is gonna be one that I hope makes huge waves in the Isekai formula and expectations going forward.

This scene reminds me of the final movement of "Firebird" from Fantasia 2000, where the aspect of mother nature regrows the land after the devastation of the volcanic eruption. If only she had kept going and really showed the knights just how magically gifted she truly is. Oh well, another time.

I dont think it means anything, i dont want to be some prophet of doom but if anything, it would mean that the anime is unlikely to get another season, there are some animes that end with "and the stor goes on" or something similar to that and havent got next season for quite a few years. I really hope it means nothing though and bookworm gets that highly deserved season 3

I always have two points when I watch this scene. First, there’s a continuity error with Ferdinand’s cloak. It’s blue, except for the shot where he’s taking the staff from the knight, where it’s colored yellow suddenly. Second, when that music kicks in, it’s really really good. I hope that’s a recurring musical motif that gets developed more as we watch her grow as a character.
