The media likes to make a big fuss about Magpie's but they're actually very smart. The swooping can be annoying but if they live near you or on a walk/bike ride you take, just take a little food and throw it in as you come into their 'property' - crackers, bread, even meat, and after a day or 2 they will ignore you. They just want to know you're not there to take their babies (they've only just hatched) and people running away looks guilty to them.
