Riva Ridge never seemed to get the credit he deserved. Great race horse with a big heart. It's great to see Eddie Sweat and Lucien Laurin working with Riva Ridge, one year prior to Secretariat winning the Triple Crown. If it weren't for a muddy track at the Preakness, maybe Riva Ridge could have won the Triple Crown in 1972. Beautiful horse who died way too young (age 16). Thanks for sharing this wonderful video!

From the Daily Racing Form (DRF.com) 09/30/2010 - Penny Chenery on the movie "Secretariat" - “The movie barely mentions Angle Light in the race call of the Wood,” Chenery said. “That, Riva Ridge, and my sister would be the three major omissions in my estimation. It was Riva Ridge who really saved the farm, but that would detract from the story, wouldn’t it?” Riva Ridge was always Ms. Chenery and Lucien Laurin's favorite.

The Chenery family and their team of great people like Lucian, Charley, Eddie, etc. managed after decades of hard work and dedication, to bring two great Champions to the racetrack. How many other stables can boast winning 5 of the 6 Triple Crown races and setting three still standing track records for speed and endurance in a two successive year period ? Riva saved the farm and Secretariat put the Chenery name in the history books for all time.

@bruce robbins Riva was simply outdone by a rain storm. Winning 2 out of 3 is an incredible accomplishment and again outdone by a damn downpour. He lost the Preakness if memory serves me correctly and normally its the Belmont that trips up a horse. Not convinced he shouldn't have won Horse of the Year ahead of the 2 year old Secretariat?

How could I lose. I remember how 'they dismissed my prediction. Those that r still alive remember. I remember the 1st race Riva won. I was there. River Downs. I remember the 1st time I heard Red name. N the radio. 'They're n the stretch n here comes Secretariat'. N a way, it's such a sad time for me seeing them. Secretariat was shipped from Hialeah to Belmont on April 3 that year according to the log compiled by Bill Nack, with assistance from Lucien Laurin & Henry Hoeffner. .. see the book by Raymond G. Really? Hmmm, I think that Secretariat still holds the TC statistics! His Preakness time was corrected not too long ago! Secretariat, it is written! When Secretariat lost races, it was not due to his inability to win, he was sick! With an abscess in his lip, the size of a half dollar, he still came in 3rd! That's dedication! Please note that I appreciate all of these horses efforts, and there are other great horses out there. However IMHO, Secretariat is the greatest! His TC times speak for themselves!

If not for Riva's success, poor Secretariat might've ended up a lead pony on the bankrupt Meadow Farm. Thankfully Riva Ridge was too good to let that happen! Why was Secretariat so good? Because Riva Ridge was so good!!!

Riva Ridge didn't save the farm it was the syndication of Secretariat.

Actually before both of them Round Table saved the farm. In 1957 as a 3 year old Round Table saved Claiborne farms from going bankrupt. He "more or less held the farm together, paid the estate taxes, and so on," this was said by Arthur Bull Hancock after his father died. Round Table himself was an phenomenal racehorse being considered by experts the best American turf racer in history.

Penny said Riva was her favorite. He was sweet-tempered but a bit of a diva and an attention hog. He would pout if he didn't get a lot of attention. "...legs like a deer." :) Would you believe it, they bred Riva Ridge to Somethingroyal, Secretariat's dam, when she was 24 years old! It was her last foal. I believe it was a colt they named Rossini. Sorry I didn’t see that autocorrect changed Riva to Diva. Sorry Riva.
Funny prove out kicked riva ridges' butt so bad at the 2 mile jockey gold cup that ridge just couldn't keep up with him and, gave up and, ended up last. Prove out did 3:20 flat for tha 2 mile gold cup the secound fastest horses to ever win run the 2 mile jockey gold cup after the great kelso who not only is the only horse to win it 5 times, kelso hlds the 3 fastest timings for it breaking the record 2 times on 2 sloppy tracks!!!! Oh by the way prove out holds the 4th fastest timing for it. Prove out also kicked secretariats' butt inn the woodward giving 7 pounds away to him. Secretariat never raced prove out again, though he could have faced him in the 2 mile jockey gold cup. Think kelso had a chance in hell to whup secretariat? Kelso is the greatest racehorse of all-times and, it's not even close. Neither man of war or, secretariaty set a record on a sloppy track kelso did it twice in one of them breaking his own record! Riva had as his grand sire the Irish Turn-to, who is found in many stayers. He also has many other greats like Nearco. Prove Out was a very good horse. He kicked "The Immortal" Secretariat's but in the Woodward. Riva has ETRs, NWorldR at 1-3/16, and a NTR at 9 f. at Aquaduct. 1997 went into the Hall of Fame, was champion US 2 year old, and champion US Older Horse.
