I think the fact that Dan had to go to the lengths he did was because of Matthias’ ability to constantly retake records proves Matt is the best 64 runner, plus the absolute dominance in live events.

honestly Matthias' 8 times at 31/32 is way more impressive than Dan's 32/32 because he was actually giving his competition a transparent, fair shot at going after or defending times. I'd struggle to call his accomplishment illegitimate since it still took a lot of work, but it's certainly cowardly. how anyone could take any pride in doing it this way is beyond me

Great video! Well, it is easy to put out that Matthias could have reached 32/32 had he not published the records that put him to 30/32 or 31/32, which would let the community thinking he wasn't so close to having the greatest achievement in mk64 ever. What Dan did was exactly that, but only to dethrone the REAL GOAT.

Disgustingly underrated, I hope people don't write this video or especially your channel off as a Summoning Salt/Bismuth knock off, this is incredibly well done and detailed beyond what could be reasonably expected. Getting the players' side of the story is definitely a welcome change of pace from the former-mentioneds' style as well. I've seen those live event videos every so often but (as with most niche hobby corners of the internet) never imagined it went this deep with so much history between the top competitors.

I’m not a speed runner but something about hearing about the records and the people involved always gets me hooked, and this is one of the best documents period I’ve seen on KZbin. Engrossing and informative while still being understandable for more casual eyes. I was rooting for Dan way up until the end when it turned out he resorted to such an underhanded method to finally beat the man who one upped him in every encounter they had, and Matitas might just be one of the best MK players I’ve ever heard of, and definitely the kind of person worthy of the respect he gets. Great stuff, this shit could be a movie and yet I’m sure this would still be the better telling of it all.
@enting1991
@enting1991 3 жыл бұрын
What the video doesn't tell is that Dan even one-upped his scumbaggery by breaking his promise to not go for the champ title again until he'd beat all of his own hoarded WRs. It was one of the things MR and Dan agreed on when they discussed on how to continue after the unhoard, and Dan wanted to do that so he would "erase" the hoarded WRs by beating them live on his stream. However, he never did. He broke his promise and never beat a number of his own hoarded WRs, and instead played other courses strategically to attack Matthias and to gain him champ status again. It was ultimately Matthias, just a couple weeks ago, who finally improved the last of Dan's hoarded WRs. So it took almost a full year to beat the last hoarded WRs - when usually Matthias could take back WRs in hours or days. However, the hoard will basically never be "undone". Dan improved for 15 months and now has a huge lead in experience on some courses where Matthias needs weeks (!) of grinding to get into WR territory. Weeks that Dan uses to improve other WRs again. It basically reversed the roles where now Matthias has to attack and Dan can defend. That obviously is a huge advantage and it could've taken Dan years to get into this position if he hadn't hoarded, but Matthias got into that position years ago without ever hoarding - so it CAN be done if you're the better player. The hoarding set back the MK64 community by at least a year. I'm always confused how people can still cheer for Dan. His hoarding was bad enough, but breaking his own promise made it so much worse (in my opinion). It showed that he wasn't ever really sorry for his hoarding, he doubled down on his underhanded behaviour. He only cares about champ status. He doesn't care about the health of the community or competition. Dan could get 32/32 (which he never will even get close to because he's not as good as Matthias) and he'd still not be anywhere near as great as Matthias, because being "the best" requires qualities he simply doesn't have. Matthias = GOAT.

@@enting1991 here here Ente! Absolutely agree with you. MR lost the ability to defend his title from the top of the hill (which he earned when he took the championship from MJ) and now has to battle Dan going uphill. While I think MR is still the more talented player, its very close, but the advantage belongs to the champion, in any competition. Thats why Dans status as champion is not regarded with the same esteem, even after all the hoarded times got beaten, because he never had to do the harder job of climbing up the hill. Also, people tend to think that MR should have just kept grinding times that he already had the record on (or perceived to have the record on) but this does not make sense, when the battle at the top is for number of WRs, not how much can you optimize a single course.

Matthias tried and failed to reclaim after quite some time is the main reason of him quitting. By the end, it was clear that it's no longer two persons rivalry anymore, Dan was better in all aspect. If someone broke the record he could easily best them because the hoarding record was actually slower than what he was capable of mostly because Dan invested a lot of time by the end of the rivalry. All 32 records are now not because of the hoarding, most players has tried and failed to broke it including Matthias.

@@sECUREij I've followed this whole show from the outside, and from everything I see, the A1A and MR were incredibly tight knit. MR welcomed the competition, and have said he loved it. But when Dan played dirty, it literally broke him. He stated as much in his retirement post. Part of the challenge of getting 32/32 was fighting A1A and the runner-up. It's just part of the competition. But if you assassinate the spirit of your runner-up, everything gets easier. Dan couldn't get number 1 and didn't want to face the fight, so he just killed (the spirit of) the next best player. @@tygrenvoltaris4782 Absolutely, but using grey areas in the rules to win gets you the title a victory under the rules affords you and nothing more. What *isn't* owed to you, under strictly the rules and nothing else upon winning, is people's respect or their congratulations which ironically is probably the main thing most people are *actually* chasing in gunning for titles like these. That comes by respecting the spirit of the competition, which MR honoured to the highest degree for years on end while Dan completely spat on it for his own convenience. Hence the vast vast majority of support under this video and any others about 32/32 being for MR and acknowledging *his* efforts and saying he's truly the best no matter what and that Dan's "official" victory will always have a massive asterisk next to it. With a reception like that, what was the point of getting that victory in the first place when all people will remember about it is the sort of person they see you as for the means you took to achieve your ends? I think what best sums up the legacy Dan created for himself is that when searching "Daniel Burbank" in the YT search bar, the auto-fill suggestions *literally* puts hoarding above 32/32 lmao. So tldr, I don't think Dan really did use his brain lol, I think he was blinded by greed and made an incredibly short sighted decision that won him the battle but lost him the war.

@@tygrenvoltaris4782 That's 100% a fair perspective to have. I guess a trade like that really is all about which matters more to you. I just personally think that even if you really didn't care at all about the community's opinion on you and how that might be expressed and how that might impact you, it would eventually come to a point where, years later after all the glow of getting 32/32 has faded, having people still criticizing you, judging you way beyond the actual scope of your actions, etc whenever you're even tangentially mentioned would get exhausting or annoying beyond what that short term glow of getting what you wanted was worth. And since Dan clearly has a love of Mk64 speedrunning, the epicenter of all of that criticism will always be precisely where he wants to spend his free time. Idk, just kinda feels like he poisoned the water of a bath he planned to keep sitting in. I guess my view on this idea is just down to the fact that a short term reward in exchange for a much longer term negative always seems like an awful tradeoff to me, but I totally get that if you completely dgaf then its a no-brainer that it was worth it.

Meh, the hoarding doesn’t change the skill it takes to do it. The reason Matthias quit is simple, he couldn’t broke Dan’s record he wrote it himself he just couldn’t dedicated more time and who could fault him? If it’s no longer fun then he shouldn’t spend that much time playing IMO. It’s unfortunate for him because he wrote that he wanted to quit for some time already and likely waiting to be the first person to reach 32/32 and then retire. A small part of me wants MR to vome out of retirement with 32 world records all hoarded away for a few years. Won't get the title cos hoarding is now banned, but that middle finger to everyone defending hoarding would be hilarious. He wouldn't do that though... you either have class or you don't.

I already see the A1A alliance as stretching the concept of fair play. It would be more fair to let MR get the records before concentrating so much effort into beating him, since he definitely was the best player. Hoarding times to prevent others from doing this to him, on Dan's part, was even more unfair. It wasn't cheating or against the rules, but it's a dirty move nonetheless IMO.
@SQWEKERZ
@SQWEKERZ 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly if Dan hadn't taken part in A1A I would have no problem with the hoarding, I know I'm in the minority on this but I feel like the A1A doesn't just stretch the concept of fair play but smashes it into tiny little pieces. When your opponents are meta gaming I think it's fair to do the same.
@VitaEmerald324
@VitaEmerald324 Жыл бұрын
I think my problem arises in that Dan both took part in the A1A and committed to hoarding times. The A1A was the public front put up to prevent Matthias’ perfect record. Dan participating in that but also going behind everyone’s back is literally being two-faced.
@PublicAtLarge
@PublicAtLarge 2 ай бұрын
I disagree. The A1A didn't do anything wrong. If anything, the fact there was such strong competition for all that time made things a lot more interesting than if Matthias had swept all 32 without any battle (a la Dan). Besides, if MR had just swept all 32 records, do you think Mario Kart 64 would still be of interest in 2024? I don't. What Dan did was completely the opposite of being competitive... he KNEW Matthias would fight back, so he essentially tied Matthias' arm behind his back.

That's...not really what getting Behemoth'd _was_ though. Getting Behemoth'd referred to having a record beaten by a relatively new/unknown player that didn't have a lot of eyes on them prior. The original occurrence wasn't an instance of hoarding, the run was put out when it happened as normal.

KZbin's algorithm's at it again lol. I got obsessed with Tetris a couple of years ago because of it, and now I know WAY more about MK64 than I ever thought I would. Thanks for this video and your others. I may have to go back and play some old school MK (Super Circuit was my jam back in the day). I think what Dan did was wrong, but at least he did officially become champion back in January, and since then he and MR have been trading the title back and forth with one another. As of this comment they've trade the championship 7 times, and I hope we get to see a part 2 someday.

"Officially" still isn't "fairly". The hoarding of 15 months basically reversed the roles, where Dan can defend and Matthias has to attack. This obviously is a huge advantage for Dan. And while MR got into that position years ago without ever hoarding, which was a lot of honest and hard work, Dan took a cheap shortcut to get there. It could've been years of honest competition for Dan to get into that position, if he ever would have, but the hoarding now put Matthias at a disadvantage ever since. Not to mention Dan promised Matthias to not go for champ status again until he would've beaten all his own hoarded WRs, as a way to basically remove any hoarded WRs. But he broke that promise shortly after - and ultimately, just weeks ago, it was Matthias who defeated the last standing hoarded WRs. It took him almost a year to do this, when usually Matthias would take back WRs within hours or days, at most a few weeks. That shows that the hoarding was far more damaging that it may look. The last 11 months saw the times being pushed down by a lot, with WRs every week. Imagine how low the times could be right now if the 15 months before that would've been filled with that kind of competition... the hoarding set back the MK64 community by at least a year.

Matthias is the greatest MK64 speed runner over and it took the entire goon squad to beat him meanwhile Dan is genuinely a terrible human being and so are the officials who decided to keep Dan’s record while preventing others from doing the same. That’s rigging the system no matter how you slice it. North Korean elections have more integrity than MK64 speedrunning at this point.

I'm not sure I can feel too bad about what Dan did even with the "spirit of the community" aspect given that the other players literally banded together to deny Matthias. When your opponents are employing tactics outside of just driving the game I think it's entirely fair to do the same though Dan shouldn't have participated in that either.
