This song was actually song and written by Joni Mitchell reminiscing about her Christmas memories from her native Manitoba ( or Alberta I aint sure ) while she was struggling in California. In Canada rivers would freeze during Christmas time. Hence she wanna skate like she did when she was young. This nostalgic element is perfectly suited here in this series where Ben Platt is giving eulogy to his Mandarin teacher, Boyfriend, Best Friend and election rival named River.

First time I heard this song, in the politician, I cried like crazy... but that was a while ago so forgot about it. Watched the Netflix series Away last night, and the original version of this song was playing, and for some reason I started crying again. I couldn't understand why I sobbing like that.. Then I thought it must be the song, cause I recognized it, but knew something was different. I just had to know. Googling, I came across Ben's version and it all came streaming back to me... You know he’s an incredible singer when the entire audience is genuinely speechless watching him sing and you can tell a lot of them are even breaking character because his performance really is THAT touching.
