Andy faces up to one of his biggest bogey flies, the daddy long legs or cranefly. River fly fishing can be hard enough when the brown trout are shy in low clear water, but it's even harder when you have to use a fly you don't like! UK river fly fishing is super fun and though it isnt always the best fly the daddy long legs really can work. If you're looking for river fly fishing techniques, or if dry fly fishing for trout is your thing then you'll enjoy River Dry Fly Fishing For Trout With My BOGEY FLY - The Daddy Long Legs (Cranefly)

Great video Andy. Daddy long leg and large terrestrial patterns have worked very well for me on the wye recently but I was surprised by the orange one. There have been some huge fish tormenting me all season in the big pool that you fished at the start of the vid! 🤣👍

Great video as usual Andy and a cracking concept. I have the same issue with sedges although I know some angling friends swear by them and I’ve seen them catch fish right next to me using them. I always carry Daddies but rarely use them unless it’s a late summer evening. I’ve also had some success with the orange daddie on your Derby Wye but only because, despite the foam, the darn thing kept sinking so it was acting more like a lure….who knows? Keep up the good work 👍🎣

Hahaha! We are practically diametrically-opposed on fly choice & in ‘daddy confidence’. 95% of my fishing is on dry daddies, every fish I catch is wild, and it’s very seldom I’m unsuccessful. However, I rarely fish those detached body & foam patterns you were testing, preferring the bog-standard pattern in smaller sizes. Still, great video as always, please keep ‘em coming. 😊

Bogey fly for me is a wet - Alexandra. I believe it was once so deadly it was banned in some places. I think I've caught one fish ever on it yet it's always in my traditional wets box. Looks quite like a Butcher for me which is a go to fly??? On that note, just a gentle reminder on that across and down stream wet fly video : ) Maybe when the water levels pick up. I'd also love to see an upstream North Country Spider video, seems to be a dying technique. A wet daddy can deadly for wild browns in a little mountain lake I fish this time of year but as you say I'm sure it's just provoking a reaction rather than matching the hatch.

I have had great success with crane fly patterns in the Wisconsin Driftless. Fish seem to take them most often when skated across or slightly upstream. A good patterns is a red quill, size 10-12, with slightly larger than normal wings and probably 50% more hackle.

@@IBandAndyFishing I just rewatched the video. The places I find crane flies, and skating crane flies the best are in small pools below a riffle. The fish seem to hang just above the next riffle, and attach the crane as it skitters into their focus area.

Interestingly enough the foam body sinking slightly makes sense to me. As you said they are awful flyers and once they leave their larval state crane flies don't eat they only drink so they just touch down for a small second so the chances of a fish taking them is slim however if they land wrong they tend to sink and are sipped up. Just based on what I have seen anyway.

@@IBandAndyFishing Both. Mainly I like to target rising fish, hunting trout more than fishing. But I will if no action is going on prospect for fish in feed lines or around structures. I don’t like prospecting and most times not bother rigging up my rod if I don’t see some surface action from the trout. I also don’t nymph only dry fly upstream.

Fished several lochs boat fishing in Scotland last week and they smashed the orange foam ones but they also loved the suspender emergers as much - I think the key is the legs and how they act in the surface film? When a chap asked me what I was using he did not seem impressed either!!! Even though he saw me take 3 to his nil in near to 15 mins I do not think he would have accepted one as a gift.

dabbing is a better style to fish the daddy, it enables you to lift and drop the fly, watch a daddy on the water he lifts a little then just dropps on the surface again, if you think this is hard try surface skating for sea-trout in saltwater is the ultimate test

Andy's just proved the Daddies can work. I've never had luck with them (though I've never tried orange or foam ones). I was determined to make them work last week on Wye so I fished up through three good quick runs, trying each run with a hare's ear #12 Daddy first, then with a #14 deer hair sedge. Nothing seemed interested in the Daddies and I got rises to sedge in all three runs (all rainbows). I don't think this proves anything, though - maybe the D would have worked on pools, or maybe under trees - looks as though Andy was doing well with D in slower water?

I think stockies see them as pellets. Those of us who live near Stockbridge have fly boxes full of “Robjent’s Daddies”, which my friend Trevor won’t use because he says they’re ‘pellets with legs’. I’ve proposed that the Gresham should ban them as they’re far too attractive to stockies. That having been said, I’ll undoubtedly try one when I’m next on the Test!

I have no confidence in Daddies on either river or Stillwater - I have friends who swear by them. I personally think having confidence in the fly and method makes a massive difference to your fishing. I have had limited success on Carsington with Daddies but prefer to fish them swamped sub surface - can't recall ever catching on dry. Another bug bear for me is a cat's whisker - I used to tie them for a mate who gave me pheasant tails etc in return - he thought my pattern was great but I have never caught a fish on one I fish the Derwent upstream of your stretch and don't bother with Daddies at all even now when they will be around. Someone else commented they didn't like para Adams - I carry a row of those in my box. Confidence is key to success - although what you did here is a great idea - if you restrict yourself to your "bogey" pattern you may change your luck. A good video.
