Oftentimes I dream of music, Of the river that freely flows. And it sings a song sweeter than honey, One everybody knows. Late at night, I hear it singing. Then again when I wake at dawn. And it fills me up with hope and goodwill, The will to go on, Go on. (Chorus) There is a river in Judea That I heard of long ago. And it's a singing, ringing river That my soul cries out To know. I believe it keeps on trav'lin' But it rests on the Sabbath day. And the time when it pauses in stillness, I almost hear it pray. When I'm weary and downhearted, How I long for the song it sings, For the calm within its gentle blue, The peace that it brings, it brings. (Chorus) There is a river in Judea That I heard of long ago. And it's a singing, ringing river That my soul cries out To know. May the time not be too distant When we meet by the river (meet by the) shore. 'Til then dream of that wonderful day As we sing once more, once more: (Chorus) There is a river in Judea (hallelu) That I heard of long ago (hallelu), It's a singing, ringing river That my soul cries out (my soul cries out) To the river in Judea. (optional repeat) Hallelujah source: www.lyricsondemand.com/f/feldmanjacklyrics/riverinjudealyrics.html

I remember being in a choir course in college for two semesters and this older gentleman who was a second bass like myself actually had a smoother voice and for our Christmas concert he was sick so I was in the back basically alone but we got to know each other and he was very kind... The next semester he passed away and we sang this song in his memory and never had a concert that semester. He is truly missed.

My middle school choir has a "Shindig" at the end of every school year. It's a concert where we pretty much turn into a giant glee club, singing mainstream music with choreography and everything. At the end of the concert, the 8th graders get up on stage and sing this, as a way to kind of send them off... It always sounds beautiful but it could be so much better, if it weren't for everyone on stage, including our teacher, bawling. Alumni of our school sing with us, too. My teacher started playing it on the piano today because we had free time and me and a friend of mine just broke down because we knew we would sing it this year.

I was a Tenor II in high school my senior year, in 2002-2003. This is still my most memorable and favorite song we did, besides the SATB version of "May It Be" from lord of the rings. I still know my whole part by heart and haven't sang it in years. It used to almost bring me to tears singing it. Thank you for posting a version of this that sounds how my very talented choir did back then.

I accompanied this piece for a choir decades ago, then my director whipped this demo recording out tonight... WOW! The enhanced dynamics of the choir (not in the published score) and THAT PIANO ARRANGEMENT really takes this piece to a whole new level. Someone here suggested a transcription a few months ago... I wish there was the corporate will to pursue this. And if there were only someone with the skill to actually do it [walks away, whistling]...

This is a song I remember well in choir. I was a tenor. If any choir directors are reading this comment, know that Judea can be pronounced Ju(dee)a or Ju(day)a. Neither is more correct than the other but I personally prefer Ju(day)a, it sounds nicer.
