River pollution: How to tackle the "chemical cocktail" in England's waterways

The Evenlode in Oxfordshire, UK, has been plagued by pollution, but farmers, the water industry and local volunteers are working together to clean it up.
The Evenlode’s problems aren’t unique. England’s rivers are “a mess”, a report by MPs in the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) concluded last month, due to a lack of funding and monitoring and what was called “a ‘chemical cocktail’ of sewage, agricultural waste, and plastic”. But a special partnership between local people, the water industry, farmers and others means that the Evenlode could hold the answers to how the country can clean up its rivers.

Thank you for sharing this information via a great short film. As a photographer working on a project on our River Evenlode I’m really pleased to hear that the problem is being tackled. I’ll investigate to see how I might be able to help.

3:23 This is a very telling comment from a conscientious land manager. He hit the nail on the head. Environment agencies (government authorities) are toothless and simply not up to the job, they should have the same powers as the police if not more. Environment protection has to come from the very top of government but they see environment protection as something that can discourage economic growth. Governments can not grasp sustainability, they adore neo classical economics - eventually it will fail when there is no clean water, no uncontaminated food, no biodiversity and no quality of life. Politicians pretend to listen to environmentalists but they listen more to the electorate and big business - living for today, ignore the future.

A great project for sure but while the water industry's main goal is profit this will only make a tiny difference to the pollution problem in UK rivers.

Tragic. This has been exactly the same for centuries. I thought something was done, in the 80's, then again, in the 90's.

how far would we get if we did stop oil tactics as we sat in the road demanding clean rivers?

@MattChilds you sir, are a hero. @JoOld anywhere can you recommend information or guidance on suggested techniques for that type of land management, no til, bund, online ponds, is there a model to promote?

How do steam turbines generate electricity? and clean river water!!!! Making electricity from steam is generally a three step process, involving: 1) Converting water to high pressure steam 2) Using the high pressure steam in a steam turbine to rotate the turbine shaft 3) Using the rotating turbine shaft in an electric generator to generate electricity In most cases,

Thanks for spotting this typo Jim. We do try our best but we don't always get everything right. We're only human after all. Cheers.

Only one Green Party MP in Parliament , so what do we expect? In Germany , for example , the Greens are a political force and have a presence in Government. Why? Because they have a one person one vote PR base system where people are properly represented. We have a broken electoral system , first past the post , which favours the two big parties. Caroline Lucas is the sole Green Party MP out of 650 MPs thats 0.6% representation. But I bet a lot more people than that voted ( or want to vote) Green , but we are told that any vote thats not Labour or Tory is usually a wasted vote? In Germany , my understanding is that the Green Party representation in Parliament is up in the 10-20% region. And what's worse is that the two major parties conspire together to not change the system because it suits them. Its a disgusting closed shop. Think on it.
