Hi Tom Thanks for making these lovely videos of my favourite river. The large earthenware shard could be from a pancheon or large bowl. These were locally made up to the 1960s by Isaac Button (and others) at Soil Hill Halifax and were used for making bread, washing up and bathing babies before households had plastic bowls. I have a complete one in my kitchen I keep pasta and bread in- you can see the prints from the curl of his fist where he lifted it from the wheel. I live further down the river where it’s normally too deep for wellies! Keep up the good work- if more of us collected the rubbish it would look lovely all the time.
@tomburleigh92614 жыл бұрын
Hi Jennifer, thanks for the information on Isaac Button; very interesting. The piece I took turned out to be a little older; part of a 17th century drip tray, it would have sat beneath a spit in front of a fire, probably in quite a grand house. But Pancheons can be every bit as interesting. 🙂

I only recently started watching your videos, and a now going back to view them in the order in which they are posted. They are relaxing and enjoyable to watch (and to listen). I like the glimpses of wildlife included in your videos. We have an abundance of Canadian geese here (so many that they are considered a nuisance by many), but rarely do I see other wildlife besides squirrels and rabbits. It does make me nostalgic for the woods our family owned once upon a time... I do wish you would post here in Etsy the art you have made from your found items.

May I ask where are you larking over the pond somewhere in a general area. I don't travel and have never been on a plane. I do dirt larking where I am in Dexter, New Mexico. My Grandfather was a trash hauler 60+ years ago. We still have some mounds of trash here on our own property. I find bits of jewelry, rings, small bottles of the 20th Century and other bits I love. I find these items still together after all these years because he would use a tractor to pile up the trash then set it on fire. The charcoal has helped preserve the metal objects. Some whiskey bottles are whole and a lot of glass has been morphed into different shapes. I am jealous when you look at a small glass or something interesting and just throw it back down. You do take some nice stuff with you, but still......happy larking.
@tomburleigh92615 жыл бұрын
Hi Betty. I mudlark within a 20 mile radius of my house, which is in West Yorkshire, UK. I'm planning on going further afield as soon as I can, but I haven't got the resources yet; (travel money and my own car (I share one)). Dirt-larking in such a place as yours sounds fun, I like melted bottles. I didn't know that Charcoal was a good preservative, that's something I'm going to have to read up on. I'm afraid I have to be selective in such a rich environment... always a consideration is weight, clean-up time, and storage. I carried, cleaned, and now have to find places for 76 bottles from that trip. I've been back twice since, and I'm still finding interesting things... might have re-picked up a few of the things you thought interesting.

Oh I love that little broken and discarded doll's face! It's strange how something so small and random could potentially be the best find of the day. I know that would have been for me, I love doll parts, and don't ever find any myself. That bone handle is wonderful, too! And lastly, wow, what a fascinating 'murder marker'! I love a bit of a dark history. I'm always so fascinated by grave markers that name how the person died, too. Too bad that wasn't the actual grave of the person though.
@tomburleigh92615 жыл бұрын
The bone handle turned out to be pre-1700s, which is pretty cool. I love the doll parts too.. and I'm still trying to formulate a plan for how to incorporate them into something grotesque and wonderful. Any ideas? I think I can probably find the actual grave, with a bit of research. There are some nice graveyards hereabouts, and I do like spending time in them.
@Decland6665 жыл бұрын
@@tomburleigh9261 Yes graveyards are my favourite! They really are my sanctuaries, especially the biggest one here in my little town. I plan on visiting all the lovely old ones in NYC soon. The doll parts, hmm.. I seldom incorporate bits like that into my artwork, so I know I would probably place them on tiny wooden bases and brass rods, mimicking old museum specimen collections. Or else, collect enough different parts to equal a whole face and make a 'Beauchêne skull' arrangement. Now that would be something. Otherwise I suppose a hand sculpted clay figure, not at all human like, but with part of a human doll face on it would be pretty cool!
@tomburleigh92615 жыл бұрын
Yes, a Beauchêne skull is exactly what I was thinking! I'm glad you reminded me of the name, I'd forgotten and no attempt of digging around in memories for it had any success. I hope you're having a great time in NYC, and making some great memories.

@@tomburleigh9261 I'm glad I could bring the word back into your consciousness! It comes up often in my world. Do you sell any of your finds?

Haven't done as yet; I've given a lot of the bottles away, mostly to local people as posting them always results in a broken one or two, no matter how carefully I package them. I'm not really in this for maximizing the possible immediate money, I just like finding things; and making things... when I've made some craft/art things from the things I've found, I might sell some of those.

@@tomburleigh9261 I would love to see some of the art projects you come up with. People like YOU inspire people like ME which is most helpful.

I found a link to Isaac Button for you- shame about the music but turn down the volume! Your music is much better! There’s more on Yt about him if you’re interested. I worked with a local potter in Mytholmroyd in the 1980s who admired Isaac.

Interesting idea, I'll see if I can find any pictures that corroborate it. Thanks.
