I honestly feel that everyone should stop making insensitive comments and blaming the assailant's parents for not appearing in court. At this stage, the parent's appearance in court will not make a difference. His parents are also processing their loss and would only cause more harm to other members of their family if their identity is revealed. Not to mention the negative impact to their career as well. This was a tragic incident that should make us reflect instead of simply pinning the blame on the government or the parents. For no parent would ever want this to happen to their child.

I agree that the student should've received help earlier. But there are also new reforms that focus more on mental wellbeing. Also honestly I think that coming back to sch was better than staying at home, so did many of my classmates. We weren't forced to school, those who did not want to come didn't have to. Professional help was provided by the MOE and speaking from (my own) experience I did feel better. In the past few days, we barely had lessons and it was really nice to see how both the students and teachers supported each other thru this. Even tho the news only reported that exams were all cancelled for this week, exams in the next few weeks were also cancelled. I think the school did their best to help us, both students and staff. But that's just my opinion la

I get what you say. For me as child and teenager back then too it was tough especially coming from a background of family violence & being forced by both parents to keep silent about the abuse ...pretty much made me suicidal and several attempts to end my life. Thankfully i survived but i agree support for mental health is crucial -- it helped me a lot since i have always been a loner and nobody i know wanted to discuss family violence. I advice you to turn to your school counselor , or good samaratins of singapore or family counselling centres to get help. I took those steps and these trained professionals really helped me. Dont be afraid the find more than one therapist or counsellor to speak to...not all counsellors are equal and some are better thsn others. Please take care.

Then, one day they just snap. I should know. I have depression And anxiety and....... ( you get the point) It’s not easy to deal with this kind of thing. I can’t speak for everyone but there are times where I just completely black out and there is this blank spot in my memory, but from other people’s recounts I know I wasn’t simply unconscious. Such an incident was only a matter of time for it to happen. Mental health is a generally taboo subject here, Poorly understood and even less studied among our population. Schools as a institution is ideal for effective mass education but when dealing with individuals the school with it’s rules and biases towards conformity is breeding ground for distressed individuals. We put a lot of effort in the welfare of students. Grooming all rounded citizens etc etc. but a single student facing severe personal crisis is just one face in hundreds. If a school like RVSH with all it’s resources and calibre of it’s team could let this happen. What hope for the average Singaporean? Time to stop washing over the mental health issues of our students and openly discuss the stress of being elite.

The way the mainstream media puts it really makes me wonder many things that went unanswered. If the two boys do not know each other, then why the Sec4 boy stopped at killing just one person only? A really out-of-the-mind person could turn berserk and kill plenty more. Why hole up in the toilet? Because you want to ambush your target while he/she is at the most vulnerable position, isn't it? It is a pre-mediated move. It is planned ahead. You waited for the target to appear. Compared to those campus killing in the western countries, the casualty is always more than one person because a genuine mentally-impaired person will go all out and lose total control. Obviously, they must have known each other! One of my nephews said the two boys know each other and there was a feud between them. The sec4 boy dropped the weapon and waited for police to arrive. Not much resistance. I would not rule out the possibility of feud arising from playing too much mobile games that constantly expose young minds with brutality, violence and cold-bloodied acts. It is time we stop school-going children from having social media accounts that could spark enimity just because of some mere comments or dislikes.

This isn't manslaughter, this is murder. Let me explain the difference. Manslaughter - You take a nearby weapon and attack someone, killing them in impulse. Murder - You planned and prepare how you are gonna kill someone and the proceed with the plan, killing them. In this case the assailant brought the axe online which means he planned to kill someone.

@jen51383 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's right to blame every mental issue on stress and the eduction system. You and I are all products from the education system too but we don't go around killing people do we? Stress is typically induced by parents at home. My parents never demanded good grades from my siblings and I. In fact, just a pass was more than good enough. We only got the tuition we asked for and went on our own pace. All under the same education system. While the older ones didn't pursue a university degree, the two younger ones excelled int their academics and went on to graduate from NUS and SMU accordingly. So rather than merely pointing fingers at the govt and the system, point first to parents who are the obvious stress inducer. That being said, I don't disagree that the education system is stressful but it's the same in other countries as well especially in Asia. When we enter the workforce, it's gonne be even more stressful and competitive. Pardon for the digression here but I don't think the student deciding to kill was an act of stress relieve. Perhaps I've watched too many crime pscyhology documentaries but those murderers don't kill because of stress. Most of them had gone through some sort of trauma typically abuse at home during their childhood. I think the parents should be subjected to further investigations. I highly doubt the killing was due to stress from studies. It's unlikely.

@@aaronadam4747 not so easy :/ making our education system like Finland's probably doesn't work for us because there are many aspects to this problem, including the prevailing mindsets/core values like meritocracy, competitiveness and kiasuism which we can't really change no matter how radical reforms are in our education system. It's pretty complex. for example, if we suddenly abolished all standardized exams (except for the last one where u finally get to leave formal education) (which is what Finland's education system is like), don't you think anxious parents would want to gauge how their children are faring in school and send them to even more tuition= more stress also?

@@barney3515 so does this give any reason for others who are diagnosed mentally impaired that they can do whatever they want? There is rarely a perpetrator who is suicidal then turned murderer. Usually there is only murderer turned suicidal. Not the other way round. This kid is clearly psychopathic. Stop using the mental problem card. Mental problem do not meticulously plan out a murder by purchasing an axe online and decide to bring the weapon to school and kill. It takes planning. If he really has mental problems, he would just take a tool from D&T or F&N classes or whatever available in school, snap and kill someone. @@aisyshadi Probably should rephrase my reply. I'm not saying that the mentally disabled automatically get a pass from jail. @barney35153 жыл бұрын
@@aisyshadi Another thing I wanna point out: "mental problem do not meticulously plan out a murder". Please enlighten yourself on mental disorders before stating this fact. This just shows that you are stereotyping people with mental disorders to be dumb and incapapable of doing everyday things. Although some may be incapable of doing those things, I can confidently say at least above 50% of those with psycological disorders know what they're doing. I have a friend who is autistic. Despite him being autistic, you can still see that there is a spark of intelligence in him, despite the fact that they don't show it explicitly. Also, we live in the 21st century, not the 20th anymore. Have you seen how easy it is to order an axe online? Even a twelve year old could do it with a credit card.
@itsyogirlweii78493 жыл бұрын
I think that the people of Singapore should open their eyes on mental health after this incident. Heck, I don't think it's just Singapore but Asia as a whole because we are often told that having mental health problems = being a crazy person/ a lunatic, which is so not true + it's way complex and diverse than we think it is. I have so many friends and family members living in SG and the system there is so stressful. Not only that, quite an amount of parents I've seen so far put a ton of pressure to children at a very young age, and it could lead to childhood trauma. And that fear grows as they grow older. I felt it first hand and instead of becoming one of the best in my peers, I dropped so much because of how much pressure and resistance being pent up for years just exploded. I literally end up not knowing what to do as i was always following the wishes of my parents, like a robot. As much as us adults, esp parents, want the next generation to flourish in their lifetime, pressuring children to perfection + making them feel ashamed for not being really good at something/anything/everything at all is not the way to go. For parents and future parents out there, please be there for your children and not blame them every small thing. Instead, guide your children to the path they want to go and support them in whatever this rollercoaster of a life gives us. Other than that, please don't project your insecurities and past regrets to your children. Normalize learning to self reflect and heal from your own past traumas that you may not know before but you are subconsiously projecting it outside. It's subtle but it impacts children at a very young age as at that age, they absorb everything like a sponge.

RV is one of the SAP and top schools but sadly SAP schools are meant for one ethnic group only. Students in SAP school arguably lack the opportunities to socialise with students of the other ethnicity and whether this is good or bad is for the experts to figure it out. We all know that students in the SAP schools attended ‘ neighborhood’ primary schools with multi-ethnicity students and some made good friends but when they cleared their PSLE,that relationship ended. The students went to different secondary or SAP schools because of their PSLE’s T score.Most ended at ‘neighborhood secondary schools and they could still mingle with their schoolmates from different backgrounds but is it t the same at SAP schools?

@@biutifulkruz798 So many speculations are made here. Like that family psychologist said the other day, one must not make wild guesses regarding this matter for the sake of the affected families. He also said we must try to put oneself in the affected families' shoes. No sane person raise their kid to be a killer. Something terribly must have gone wrong in the 16 year old child 's life for him to perpetrate this unspeakable, unpardonable crime. That is NOT justifying his actions in ANYWAY! (SEE, UNPARDONABLE). However, WE don't know ANYTHING about those terrible happenings of his life, if any, his motives and the like. So, in my opinion, I think speculating won't solve any issue and we should leave the investigation to the relevant government authorities. With reports of school violence in the US, isnt there a protocol where students are checked for possession of any sort of weaponry here in Singapore? My deepest condolences to the family of the victim 😔
@Felix_SG3 жыл бұрын
Firstly this is not the US. To copy a band-aid solution from another country is not dealing with the real problem. In the US its the convenient availability of lethal weapons that is the problem. Secondly a protocol will only check for the obvious items like guns, knives, and axes etc. It doesn’t deal with the mental illness which could be the underlying issue here. Should we have a protocol to have school check if their students have become sociopaths at the gate? Bottom another process at the school simply passes the responsibility to another institution when this should have been a private personal issue. Which it was, until the students murders another student.

It breaks my heart. Better than your words, your eye tells me all your peril. You are not yet free, you still search for freedom. Your search has fatigued you and made you too wakeful. You long for the open heights, your soul thirsts for the stars. But your bad instincts too thirst for freedom. Your fierce dogs long for freedom; they bark for joy in their cellar when your spirit aspires to break open all prisons. To me you are still a prisoner who imagines freedom: ah, such prisoners of the soul become clever, but also deceitful and base. The free man of the spirit, too, must still purify himself. Much of the prison and rottenness still remain within him: his eye still has to become pure. Yes, I know your peril. But, by my love and hope I entreat you: do not reject your love and hope! You still feel yourself noble, and the others, too, who dislike you and cast evil glances at you, still feel you are noble. Learn that everyone finds the noble man an obstruction. The good, too, find the noble man an obstruction: and even when they call him a good man they do so in order to make away with him. The noble man wants to create new things and a new virtue. The good man wants the old things and that the old things shall be preserved. But that is not the danger for the noble man - that he may become a good man - but that he may become an impudent one, a derider, a destroyer. Alas, I have known noble men who lost their highest hope. And henceforth they slandered all high hopes. Henceforth they lived impudently in brief pleasures, and they had hardly an aim beyond the day. ‘Spirit is also sensual pleasure’ - thus they spoke. Then the wings of their spirit broke: now it creeps around and it makes dirty what it feeds on. Once they thought of becoming heroes: now they are sensualists. The hero is to them an affliction and a terror. But, by my love and hope I entreat you: do not reject the hero in your soul! Keep holy your highest hope!
