First day on the Wye in 2024 and a good start christening a new rod and reel. I bought a day ticket from Hereford & District Angling Association on their town stretch. I had the afternoon free and this ticket permitted easy parking and access to a nice stretch of urban fishing.
I was able to give the new rod a workout and get to practice using the new closed face reel. Barbel fishing according to the locals had been slow getting started this year but I managed to hook into the target species albeit a small example.
Join me on the bank / in the river for a lovely afternoons fishing. Do let me know in the comments which method of hooking the meat you use.
Tight lines in your own fishing

Well done on christening the new rod. I started trotting for chub & barbel two years ago and I have exactly the same rod as you, it’s a great rod! I fish the HDAA waters regularly when I visit the Wye. Regarding putting meat on the hook I push the hook right through and twist it 90 degrees and push the hook back into the meat. It doesn’t seem to make a lot of difference but the meat often stays on for another two or three casts.

Hi, thanks for the information and tips. You are fortunate to be able to fish the Wye and HDAA waters regularly. I have had very enjoyable sessions each of the three times I have fished it. I'll be back next year for some more action.

Thank you for your support. Trotting is one of my favourite methods of fishing and on this occasion it was enhanced from the new rod and reel set up. Both are rather s step up from the usual level of Another Angle UK tackle.

Can't beat trotting a float down the river Phil, footage was spot on. Regarding meat, I always have the point free from the meat, I turned the end of a needle up, push it through the meat, hook the hook and pull it through until the point is showing..

That's a good idea to use a adapted needle to pull hook through the meat cube. I'll try that on my next trotting session. I had a second day on the Wye and had some chunky fish including a PB of nearly 5lbs.

very entertaining session, seemed very quiet for a town section! great fun trotting or freelining rivers like this. Well done on the ferox and subsequent rod prize! I generally push the hook through luncheon meat , give it a 90 deg twist and pull gently back. Also, I cut it into strips rather than cubes, and break off sections for hook bait and loose feed, so the shape is irregular. I've heard square cubes can spook educated barbel and chub, which could account for you catching the chub in the smaller size bracket - the bigger, older fish could be "cube -wise"!?? I recently fished a club section of the lower Wye near Ross, in a couple of hours I caught a decent barbel, lost one and missed a good run, all on freelined luncheon meat in fairly shallow fast runs like your favoured swim here. The lads fishing static feeder tactics in deeper pools weren't touching any. This time of the year I think a mobile approach and drifting bait is more effective - they ARE feeding! A barbel upwards of 4lb is a match for any salmon, in my opinion, fight wise. well done fella!🙂🙂

Thanks you, I was surprised just how good the stretch was. I would have done better if I'd added more feed. The rod is a dream to use and a huge change from the 'budget' rods I normally use. It's a rod I'll really enjoy and treasure for future use. Very interesting point regarding cubes of meat rather irregular offerings. Something to experiment with on a future trotting session.

In answer to your question, I push the hook all the way through turn 90 degrees and pull it back into the meat. Don’t worry about the hook point not being exposed, the bait is soft enough for the hook to pull through. Try Bacon Grill from a big supermarket chain whose name begins with M 😉 If I can offer you a little tip, once you make the cast keep the rod perpendicular to the flow of the river i.e. 90 degrees from your bank. If you start moving the angle of the rod towards your bank the float does the same thing and comes away from the line you wish to trot. I didn’t see you feed but that may have been because you didn’t film it but keep the feed going in even when you are not getting bites and you will draw the fish in to your swim.

Hi, thanks very much for commenting and taking time to offer these tips. I will put them into action next time I'm trotting the float. I felt that pushing the hook through, twist and back into meat seemed to stay on hook best. Good advice on the feed, I'm too cautious with that. Thanks again. I can't wait to return and put these tips into practice.

Thank you very much for watching and commenting. It was amazingly lucky to have caught such a wonderful Ferox and the icing on the cake was winning the competition that week and getting the new rod. My luck was certainly in.
