Riverbottom Nightmare Band - Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas.
Behold the greatest band of all time!
Following an introduction by Kermit the Frog, the story tells of Emmet Otter and his Ma, a widow who scrapes by on the small amount of money she gets from doing laundry and that Emmet gets from doing odd jobs around their home in the town of Frogtown Hollow despite both of them often being cheated. Some of the people who cheated them are Old Lady Possum and Gretchen Fox (the wife of Mayor Harrison Fox) of Waterville. As Christmas approaches, they hear of a talent contest in the nearby town of Waterville with a grand prize of $50, and separately decide to enter to buy store-bought presents for each other: an elaborate guitar for Emmet or a piano for Ma. However, in a twist on The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry, they must sacrifice each other's livelihood for the talent contest. Ma hocks Emmet's tools for dress fabric while Emmet turns Ma's washtub into a washtub bass for a jug band. Emmet assembles Wendell Porcupine, Harvey Beaver, and Charlie Muskrat as the Frogtown Hollow Jubilee Jug Band.
Emmet and Ma each do an excellent job (despite Emmet's jug band having to frantically change songs after another contestant performs their song, Bar-b-que), only to be defeated at the last minute by a rock and roll band called The Riverbottom Nightmare Band, which comprises a hoodlum gang from the fairly distant town of River Bottom made up of Chuck Stoat, Fred Lizard, Howard Snake, "Pop-Eyed" Catfish, and Stanley Weasel. However, as the Frogtown Hollow Jubilee Jug Band sing a song together on the way home (more accurately, both of their talent show songs together after Ma realized they fit together), they are overheard by Doc Bullfrog (owner of a local restaurant called the Riverside Rest) who hires them to sing for his customers. This grants them the bigger prize. Kermit concludes the special with Emmet, Ma, and the gang playing in front of Doc Bullfrog and the customers.

This is one of the few shows that I can remember, where the "villians" won fair and square. They didn't cheat. They were just better. A great lesson for young kids to learn. You won't always win.

So true! I'm a fan of the fact that the Riverbottom Nightmare Band didn't cheat to win. They played their song at the appointed time, won the prize money, and went home. They were jerks, but they rehearsed a great song!

it helps that the stakes aren't some orphanage needing funds, but just a kid and a mom who both foolishly squandered their christmas present buying money and hoped a miracle would bail them out.

IIRC the prize in the show was only $50. It shows true heeldom by the Riverbottom Gang to spend MULTIPLE times that money to buy costumes, instruments, and waste gas to get to the show at the last minute to play one song with the sole purpose of denying Emmett's band the money. And that's really motivation that is seldom seen in movies these days: The bad guy saying, "I don't care how much I lose, just as long as YOU LOSE".

Most of the performers are right handed so the rods for the hands are controlled by the Muppeteer’s left hand. Annie Sue from The Muppet Show was one of the few right handed Muppets because her performer was left handed. She is probably the best known right handed Muppet.

They should have made the nightmare band full-blown criminals. They should have robbed that store in the beginning, cheated at the contest by threatening the judges, attacked Emmett and his friends when they were rehearsing in the tree house, and sabotaged the other contestants' performances. Other than stealing a scarf from Kermit in the cold open, they didn't do anything illegal. The nightmare band should have been much more malicious and villainous.

Fun fact: While the RBNB was made up of strongly predatory animals and Emmet was just a "cute" otter, in nature, otters are serious predators, making any of the other RBNB members an easy snack, save for the bear. Otters are not just cute and furry, they are voracious predators that will seriously kill anything.

hang on, how is Stanley Weasel being puppeted? The camera pans around him completely, at no point does he seem to have an arm trailing either behind him (which would hurt Jerry Nelson's wrist pretty badly anyway) or below (you can see between his legs is genuine empty space)
@DorkLords

Great question! I found this quote from the wiki: "The special utilizes a number of different puppetry methods. The main puppets used are the usual Muppet hand puppets, but the characters are frequently represented by marionettes as well. It also utilizes the Black Theater techniques. This is also one of the first Muppet productions to use radio control puppet effects, designed by Faz Fazakas."

@@DorkLords arr! You can definitely see some of the funusual methods on display.. and the background IS black, so I was wondering if there was a black sleeve out of view, but if so, then he nudged it out of the way for the shots where Stanley's turned to the side, so you can still see between the legs and there's nothing there (might be why the speaker sits there)
