Wonderful program and music. It made my morning and probably my day. I'm going to rewatch it when I get home. It's going to be a long day. I will need a wind down. I would rather be in my Kayak than go to my Doctors. I'm in Utah . I'd rather have a warm day on the Thames

Truly fantastic film footage and sound, that borders on the most magical of sensory experiences. I shall look forward to the chance of many further expeditions into the hitherto unseen visions of the River Medway and its surroundings.

I know this area and used to sail the Medway on a variety of ships. Brilliant video and an excellent choice of backing music! I felt myself willing your drone home! Well done you!

I was pleased to see you land your machine safely, impressive stability making for a very good video. I left the Medway Towns in 1970 for Oz and have never been back so any look is interesting to me, been all over google earth and staggered at the changes.

Wow, something magic about this comment. I was born in the 80s in Medway and have lived all over Kent and I'm back in Medway now. I can only imagine how much has changed since your time in the 70s. During lockdown I uncovered a lot of my grandads photography and art and two particular pictures - a snap from perhaps the 20s (his teens) from the middle of Gillingham high street looking towards the train station, and another in exactly the same place from the 80s (just years before his death). I'm going to take a 2020 shot with my SLR from where he took his. Time hasn't been kind to the Medway towns as far as humanity goes, if you ask me. However, there is so much beauty and history to be found, often hidden in plain sight. Riverside here is one of those places. High streets are dead, we are housing the overspill of disrespectful louts of London and places are lacking investment outside of shopping malls and such stuff. If you look past the surface, there's plenty of hidden gems around these parts. Most of them you'll no doubt remember well from before your move, long before I was even born.

Yes the battery is a bit of a pain, once it gets to 10% it will go into a forced landing.....not good over water lol :)

Hi mate, absolutely loved this video. I also love Riverside and that general area across the river Medway, it's a place I've grown up with and know well. I know the history of some of the abandoned boats there, such as the Waterloo next to Horrid Hill which showed up when I was about 5 years old. That tug dates back to the late 1800s and was used to transport items to London. There's the Aberdeen minesweeper near Motney Hill too. I'd like to get to see and research more of them. I'd also love to get into drones to capture footage like this. My key focus would be abandoned things stuck in time and local history. I know next to nothing about drones though and am wondering where to start. I'm technically minded though and learn fast ;) Any advice? Budget? What are you using to capture the footage in this vid? Thanks for your help :)

If you’ve got more trips planned in this area, it would be good to see the combined road/rail bridge over to Sheppey and perhaps, if you’ve got enough battery power left, a run along the edge of the island itself?
@georgestephenson2720
@georgestephenson2720 5 жыл бұрын
I do hope to get more air time in when this weather improves lol. The Sheppey Crossing is on my list of "must do's" & a few other places around the island. I would like to fly around Dead Mans Island, but I will get closer in my Kayak so I dont run out of power. :)

While the metal hulks will rust away, and the wooden ones will rot, unfortunately the glass-fibre ones will last practically forever.

Great video! George, I am curious about the long slim wooden ship wreck that can be seen aprox. 4000' east of Darnet fort. It is about 250' long, and 45' wide. Is it Roman, or Viking? Does any one know anything about it?

The Motney Hill wreck is called the Aberdeen, not sure he means that one! I was at Riverside the other week and I noticed the oiler you mention OP is gone! Any idea why, and its history?

Wonder what the concrete barges near the fort were used for?

Eight Ferrous Concrete Barges (FCB's) used for transporting/storing fuel in the Second World War. These barges now lie as hulks on Gillingham Marshes, River Medway, Kent.

There are two forts in the Medway estuary, Hoo and Darnet, Hoo is the fort on the large Island on the left in the video. It has been going through a very long process, over 40 years, of reclamation. These old barges are used to protect the island from further erosion as is the natural process in an estuary. Hoo island is almost completely ringed with these old barges. They are not so visible today because dredged sediment from the river is spread over the island to reclaim it and the barges are sometimes covered during this process. Hoo island is used by a youth outdoor organisation for camping trips etc. Darnet fort has not seen the same level of preservation and the island it sits on is getting smaller by the year. I had hopes of buying these forts myself and refurbishing them but then life got in the way. Nice video, thanks.
