I was rubbed wrong by the way Finch left her HOME, and her friends just to be with Riverstar after being so adamant about staying. It feels like female characters rarely get any autonomy in the books. Although I get that she was expecting his kits, it still made me feel off.

Genuinely wish she had stayed. If they wanted a way to connect Frostpaw to Riverstars lineage you could have just used a “riverstars kit came and found the clan” plot line later but the final second switch up was lame

I got so fed up with the new books and how no cat has a consistent character that it's been extremely difficult to bring me to read a Starless Clan or any book past the end of TBC, which sucks because I love this world and there's so much potential for a good story to be told here. And I know writing a story with so many characters is far from easy, but the writers just keep fumbling the most basic things about story telling and it just keeps happening over and over. And I know the older books weren't perfect, but they were still better than this. Unfortunately at this point I think I'm in too deep to stop.

There's this really good writing advice book called "Seven Drafts" I'm reading while I'm working on my middle grade novel trilogy. It goes into writing drafts writing story, character, phrasing, pacing, and consistency. I think these new Erin (and the old ones) could benefit from a read.

I didn’t like the way Night was persuaded into staying, right before Riverstar left with Arch. The whole “don’t you want to see your dead loved ones again?” Thing really irritated me. Especially when Riverstar had NO PROOF that Night’s dead family was in Starclan. He’d never seen them there, didn’t even know what they looked like. And we know that Starclan isn’t the only afterlife for cats, so it really bothered me that Riverstar essentially manipulated/blackmailed her.

I saw Riverstar's character development a bit differently. To me this was Imposter Syndrome the Book, and I honestly don't have an issue with that kind of idea, especially as someone who suffers from horrendous imposter syndrome while put into different leadership positions that I somehow succeed in. I relate to this really strongly. Its definitely a difficult concept to put to page, but the idea of just saying something that you don't really think about, but it absolutely was the right thing to say is common occurrence and can resonate with the right reader. When I look at Riverstar through the lens of Imposter Syndrome, it lessens how jarring the difference in personality is, imo. He puts forward this wise, worldly cat, but internally he's a mess because he lacks any true confidence in the abilities he absolutely has. He just can't internalize that. They would have made this characterization much better if they focused on Arc pointing out the "you can't make decisions for yourself" thing, and made the Save the Park Cats portion of the book much longer, rather than have half the book dedicated to DotC recap.

I saw another comment mention this but I think it’s important to clarify that River Ripple’s time as a kittypet was very much on page and a whole chapter was dedicated to it. He didn’t become a kittypet by choice per-say, he was trapped by twolegs but didn’t make the effort to escape because he was comfortable and didn’t want to be out in the cold during leaf-bare. He has a conversation with Night after he escapes and admits to that reason, I don’t think being alone was ever brought up as a motive for staying. Also from what I remember we got at least a bit of time in the early chapters seeing Night teaching River Ripple how to fish and to swim, and we saw him consistently use these skills confidently even before the formation of his group. Maybe the progression of him learning and gaining that confidence could’ve been written better but I’d definitely argue he didn’t suddenly become good at it the moment he was Riverstar. None of this is brought up to discredit the entire video, just wanted to make a comment clearing up some misinformation. The rest of your points are on the spot and I fully agree the pacing of this book was horrendous and Riverstar’s characterization was handled very sloppily. I appreciate your final commentary on how the Warriors series isn’t designed to write good books and simply make a profit, I think it’s something us long-time fans were aware of but it’s a good reminder and a cold-hard truth to keep in mind any time we open these books with high expectationis.

Thank you for making this legit I dont think im gonna buy the book based on what you described. Idk I just always liked Riverstar how he was back in dotc (even if he was sparse that mysterious stuff about him with the laid back personality just worked) and I dont want to have that image of him changed in my head. Like I enjoyed the little snippet we got from the beginning (minus the stuff about Flutter because it made no sense and was confusing) but now knowing it was overall a big change to the Riverstar we knew and also having Finch be a thing just rubs me the wrong way based on how you described it sucks when a she cat doesnt get agency. ;; Its a shame they couldnt make Riverstar's book good but at least dawn of the clans is still a thing and its okay to work on building him up from there and going forward with headcanons and stuff :3 Another awesome video as always!!

Riverstar wasn't the best choice from that poll, he really was just the least bad one lol I have the book sitting in a pile waiting to be read but I've been dreading the idea of it, especially after Leopardstar's and Onestar's SEs just utterly disappointed me on every level. SEs have been going downhill for a while but those two really hit the brick wall, and that was with characters that had a lot of potential stories that could've been spun from their generous amounts of plots and screentime. I genuinely don't think an SE about Mistystar or Ivypool would be any different than how those turned out, and in fact, they would probably be worse. I just want the Erins to slow down. You don't have to print three books a year to stay relevant, and it's really showing in just how poorly planned these books have become, with characters lacking consistency, plots falling apart, circular conversations (TBC drove me NUTS with that), and just every other structural problem under the sun. The SEs get it worst because instead of having the time to create a proper, single story for a character, they copy+paste three-quarters of the book together from OTHER books and then just write around that, and use StarClan to nudge the characters along even if it makes 0 sense. It's infuriating. idk who is deciding this pacing, but beyond the fact that it's churning out uncreative sludge, it's just inhumane, and I can't imagine working in those conditions.

I don't like the way he was characterized :/ the Riverstar in DOTC was wise, mysterious, yet confident in himself, he just wasn't like that in his super edition :/. A lot of the time Arc reminded me more of Riverstar then Riverstar. His thoughts just didn't match his actions. But I adored Night, it's so nice to have a strong female/male friendship. But literally in like 30 pages Riverstar met Finch, fell in love, and she is pregnant 🙁

Also I think one of the things I like, aside from this being DoTC is interesting to me because I adore that timeline for some reason... is that they finally give Slash attention once more. Your criticisms are valid, especially surrounding Finch! However, I did enjoy the book showing a pacifist accomplishing things in warrior cats, building a group and attracting cats with kindness rather than just offering protection. I also thought the book did add some culture, and liked how meditation was such a big part of it, it wasn't in warriors before and adding it was interesting. Don't get me wrong, overall it wasn't a good book, but I do like Riverstar and didn't think this butchered his character.

The problem with Riverstar is home is the same problem that’s running through the Books from the second arc on. And even the first arc has some of this problem. They are writing a children’s book with adult themes. To express those kinds of relationships in a way that a child can understand is hard. Actually, it’s really impossible, because they’re trying to keep, something that is very complex and a very simplified level. That is why they have all the problems with the pacing, characterization, and plot line. It would’ve been nice if they would’ve talked about you know Riverstar’s time as a young cat, being in the park, and how that society was set up, but they did not, and rehashing what was going on with that one of the clans was absolutely superfluous. The stuff after that well they just didn’t execute it right, and again, it’s because of this, trying to sit adult concepts into a child’s playground. It is just not gonna work, and there is never gonna be a point when it ever will work. Adults have messy, relationships, and a lot of what goals in between them is raising it out of the level of a child’s Mind. So I think that’s the biggest problem, and they’re going to keep on putting out these books, because they’re following a simple format, and it works because guess what people are still buying the books. If no one bought the books, they wouldn’t write it, so there you have it.

Personally I thought this among one of the best Super Editions of all of them. Is it flawed? psh, you bet it is, just like most of the books, but compared to the inconsistency fest and unfinished character arc that was Leopardstar's Honor and the snorefest and bad attempt to redeem Onestar in Onestar's Confession, I found this book extremely enjoyable. After we got the sample I was worried the book was only going to focus on some sort of prophecy that would tie in with arc 8 or that we're going to have River lament Flutter's loss 24/7 but I was positively surprised that it didn't contain the former and the latter, while unnecessary as all hell, could have been much worse. As for River's characterization I have to hard disagree for the most part. While reading he felt like the character as he was presented during DotC - only with more insight into what he was actually feeling or thinking. If he really were as uninterested in the groups and as detached as you make him out to be, it wouldn't really have made sense why he'd even have founded a group on his own to begin with. The only thing I have to agree on in terms of his characterization is the sloppy way of integrating his DotC's dialogue and how long it took him to learn how to swim - in the Bonus Scene at the end of Thunder Rising, River Ripple pretty much learned how to swim by trial of fire so to speak. Or, in his words, the river taught him to swim. Going back on that to basically pull a "haha isn't it funny and ironic that the RiverClan founder had such trouble swimming??" is pretty dumb, I'll give you that. When it comes to other characters I found this book to be a step up from OC. For most cats, we get at least one sentence telling us one notable thing about them or who they are, which obviously should've been shown and could've developed more. But in this series, where most characters nowdays don't even get that, I appreciate that over them being literal cardboard cutouts. I also liked that we finally got a super edition again that was able to show the gradual evolution of which cats joinig or leave over the course of the book. That was sorely missing from the last two. You had no real idea who survived till when and it annoyed me greatly. What I do agree with is, again, River's unnecessary love interests and the fact how underdeveloped they were. I also didn't like how we didn't get to spend any time establishing the Cats of the Park first hand at the beginning. There's literally no reason spoonfeeding us little bits and pieces over the course of the book (and then only have it as tell not show *again*) when they could've just properly introduced them in more detail at the beginning, show us how River was found and raised, than what we've got. And lastly, of course, all the tell don't show and skipping over character interactions. But the latter especially, like you said, is a general issue for the series as a whole nowdays, and not specific to this book, so while I'm also not happy about it and wish it were better, for this book it didn't bother me as much as in previous ones. Despite my personal issues and the flaws with the book I still stand by that this is one of the best Super Editions. Drizzle, the slow buildup to creating a group, River's and Night's friendship, and River slowly losing his peacekeeping mindset - while sad - were all very enjoyable to me and I'm very glad it turned out as good as it did. Again, like you said, I don't even wanna know what shit they'd have pulled in a Mistystar or Ivypool SE

This should be the top comment, you put a perfect positive spin and point of view on the book. I definitely agree with this comment. I like a mix of the super editions, some of which people hate like Mothflight's Vision - which I just relate to a lot with her portayal of depression and adhd during the book. I felt the same way with this book. It was nice to experience a new type of personality and new threats, as the threats weren't always big villians but how to settle disputes peacefully (when possible) and build a community. These aspects are often looked over in the book. Another thing that I loved is that this gave us a cultural look into Riverclan, something we don't really know a lot about. The most we've experienced in Riverclan has been through the most recent arc or other disasters, which never gives us a strong thriving Riverclan. But we know a ton about the other clans motives and cultures. Example is the past of Windclan tunneling, the connection they feel to starclan living under the sky, and that they were the first clan with a medicine cat. What do we really know about Riverclan? Well now we know Riverclan strives for peace which explains why the leaders so often don't get involved. They don't like getting in fights. They also value meditation (which they aren't doing to this day to our knowledge but it is cool). And while they are very proud of their fish eating, it didn't start that way. It started because that was the best resource for this group of unrelated cats to build a community around. Also this story is just something new. That alone brings it above past arcs for me. Most of the past arcs felt so connected to the main arc that they could not be read by themselves since the ending wasn't even in the super edition (Tigerheart's Shadow, Hawkwing's Journey) and left me disapointed and unfulfilled. OR the story was just exactly the main books with little thrown in which left me bored (Leopardstar's Honor, Onestar's Confession). This book at least was something new. I was not unfulfilled or bored by the ending or events.

This book activally managed to make Riverstar from my favourite DOTC time leader to my least favourite one. Yeah, I'd pick Skywtar over Riverstar, at least he does shit on his own, instead of waiting around for stuff to change or just mindlessly doing what someone else tells him to do. Also, may I point out that a cat pregnancy lasts a little over 2 moons, usually 63 to 70 days depending on breed. And that Finch gave birth to Riverstar's kits like, just 2 moons after they met? This can only mean 3 things (assuming the erins actually did research on cat pregnancies and don't assume a cat's pregnancy lasts for 7 days): Either Riverstar's not the father, Finch was pretty premature, or these two got it on the same day they met.

I had to wait for the library copy to free up to listen to this video so I'm super late. Flutter(totally-not-shy) being his 'someday mate' was actually very sensible. It's the high school crush you start to get close to- and then suddenly you move away and have real adult problems to deal with. You don't completely forget them, instead you idolize them when you shouldn't, and it clouds your future relationships, even when that's dumb. The one that got away... Which then leads into the interesting situation of both him and Night having things they won't get over, but relating to each other because of that history. If you eliminate Flutter, I imagine things with Night get a lot more...strange. This all being a major point of a YA book for a generally "middle school" audience is another matter, but we've already had some very interesting more "grown-up" centric writing with characters like Crowfeather lamenting his choices during fatherhood. I think the main thing is this was just too much content, and it should have somehow either been its own mini-arc or (much more sadly because Night is the best character in this book) having him know how to swim/fish from the start because of his life at the park, and cut a lot of his waffling about starting a new group with other wishy washy wafflers. All that said is this still just super janky? Absolutely.

I actually rather enjoyed the book, but I've always liked Riverstar. The way they wrote in the love story was rushed, awkward and it was difficult to watch Finch leave everything she knew for him, when she barely knew him. I did, however, enjoy watching Riverstar develop from a lonely, peaceful cat to a determined, clever cat who would do anything to save his clan. I enjoyed the conflict with SkyClan and the way they responded. The traveling was fairly boring, but what else is new The way they dealt with Slash was pretty cool, but maybe could have been more interesting. Overall, I give it... a 6.5/10

The Warriors team should just stop trying to write romance because clearly they don't know how to do it. Also it'd be great if we could have main characters without crippling anxiety. I get that it's _relatable_ but every pov is starting to melt together. And I hate how they made Riverstar a strong pacifist but then also made him excited whenever he DID fight??? He should've been sad and regretful when having to fight, not enjoying the rush of fighting only to go "noooo but I shouldn't like fighting! :(" the moment the battle is over.

I haven't read the last 2 super editions as for some reason I just didn't have that much interest in them and both of your reviews made me think "Oh it was bad, oh well maybe I'll read it just to get my own opinion. Man can we get another Super Edition that's as well written as Crowfeathers Trail cause the last few super editions (at least the ones I've read) have either been Meh (Leopardstars Honor, Graystripes Vow) or bad (Squirrelflight's hope).

What is the deal with the new super editions and all the slipping around? Stop time skipping constantly. I used to really like Riverstar and now this book has made me dislike him almost as much as Clear Sky.

Also, I do like some of the books, I did enjoy most of the new novella's. Yeah, Spotfur's rebelion and Blackfoot's reckoning aren't perfect, but they were still enjoyable imo, same with Daisy's kin, Tree's roots and Pebbleshine's kits (though id personally did not like Mothwing's secret, too much reused content that added nothing to the story. At least in case of Spotfur's rebelion we had a bit of background stuff from Avos and the bristle-stem-spot thing from a different perspective, and at least Blackfoot's reckoning attempted to show us that Blackfoot realised his past actions weren't good. Mothwing's novella added nothing imo). I also enjoyed some of the more recent graphic novels, mainly Winds of change and parts of Exile from ShadowClan and A shadow in Riverclan, as well as the recent arcs. Both TBC and ASC are hot messes in some places, but over all, I still enjoyed them. The supers though... Onestar's, Leopardstar's and Riverstar's books really weren't books I enjoyed lol, like at all. Leopard's and Onestar's books are infuriating to get through and Riverstar's book is just, boring at best.

I always really want to give new Warriors books the benefit of the doubt because I truly love Warriors, and I'm usually able to see the positives in even the most hated books in the series. But this one. It was boring. It was so boring. I love Dawn of the Clans, and I love River Ripple, so I was expecting more from this book. Also, the thing with Finch was really weird and made me uncomfortable. This book was probably on the same level as Onestar's Confession.

I feel confused… WC was always designed to be a money maker and people were critical of the books even when Vicky Holmes was working on them. To be honest, when I reread the first series a few years back, I found the text to be rather bland. While I enjoy WC analysis (as someone who stopped reading the series but adores the passion of the fanbase), I have always felt more effort is put in by the fans than by the authors. So, what changed? Are fans finally realizing more flaws because they’re more obvious with the writing team, because we’re getting older and it’s clearer to see now?

This is what happens when a book is designed to make money instead of written by someone who cares about the world and characters. They will give the cat whatever character they think will sell books, regardless of continuity.

@@sweetwolfsteve5583 I didn't read any of these three SE but they do seem exceptionally bad. On the other hand, I've also heard that the new arc is decently good. Also, just remember that Holmes left the team all the way back when the fifth arc started. There's been a lot of books since. You can't look exclusively at the last two years as proof that the team is doing worse without Holmes.

@@legrandliseurtri7495I didn't realize that she left two years ago my bad but don't read onestars confession especially bc onestars is a massive massive jerk in his own se and like I said leopardstars honor is a snorefest the new arc is kinda ok more forced romantic though
