Along the lines of scheduling charging times, it would be great if the site location builds a queue as soon as you enter it into navigation. That way, it can optimize the wait times based on who is going to show up at what time. It could assign you a stall that opens up just as you arrive.
@bbalintka
@bbalintka Жыл бұрын
It is not just the number of stations, but the number of stalls too. EA usually has 4 charges and sometimes 1 or 2 down too. If you are doing a road trip and you need to wait in line to get to the charger than you might be even looking at a 45-60minute charge time...

Not range anxiety but charger anxiety. Are any networks working on the trip? Are they available?

Refreshing to hear these concerns. I'm in a similar boat, yearly road trip from Cincinnati to Outer Banks NC is almost a no go since WEST VIRGINIA refuses to install any fast chargers over 50Kw in the ENTIRE STATE (there are Tesla superchargers in a couple of the big cities but no magic docks yet). 😡😡

It also comes down to local authorities and state regulators allowing for the construction of locations. Then Rivian and other companies have to save solid constructions plans in place, crews and the equipment to make the for a streamlined “quick” build.

They are adding plug and charge in their next OTA. Also, they should make it available to the public so they can take the government money.

I'm wondering how much the state regulations of each state played on the decision of RAN locations.

Any idea when Rivan will make DC Fast Charging available on the east coast? Many of those "coming soon" sites are already built out and ready to go. They just aren't "turned on".

Why is Rivian does not care about Texas. No RAN despite having service center in Dallas Houston and soon Austin…

Tesla released a charging membership and it’s not cheap. It also doesn’t make sense until more are opened closer to me in CT.

Rivian most certainly looked at what charging was already available on the CCS networks of their competitors before planning their chargers. Outside of N Florida there are plenty of options on competitors in Florida. You look at the areas of the West Coast that have received chargers and one thing stands out. Most fast chargers were put in on highways that are severely underserved. Until they get to the point where there is halfway decent coverage, it stands out to me that they’re opening up routes that are currently untenable for many EVs. Highway 97 from Yakima, WA to Redding, CA is 500 miles with a single EA charger in between. One of the legs exceeds Rivian’s estimate for the R1T on ATs. RAN made that trip possible. I wouldn’t chance it even in decent temps without.

Reliability is the key word. Although with all the free EA and not charging for idle time we may need to start asking for more public chargers too.
@stevelabree497
@stevelabree497 Жыл бұрын
I'm not a fan of free charging. Even when the EA site is up and working, many times there are waits because of ID4s and other getting free charging, charging up to high percentages. Also, the CCS sites are all too small. They need to build these sites with 8-10 stalls so that the wait times are shorter or non existent.

The "free" charging vehicles are limited to 30 min/charge. Just a point. Because of their range & lack of fast charging in desirable locations, I have seen people charging to high levels so they can make the out & back to the DCFC locations. Hard to be angry, they are putting up with very slow charging in order to maximize range, so, they are paying a price.

Since they have installed so few why not just adopt the North American Charging Standard (Tesla charger) and be done with it.
@dennislyons3095

I hope someone is actively actually working on expanding the RAN network with DCFC locations which are unique & not a block from an Electrify America or Tesla site. The more charging locations that operate at over 150KW, the faster EV adoption will accelerate.We are leaving on Monday on a 3000 mile trip around the west (Ca, AZ, NV, UT). We'll see how that works out. Only RAN site on our route is Barstow, CA.

Tesla opening up their chargers to no Tesla owners is great, but there is areal cabling problem as the length of the cable doesn’t reach many vehicles charging ports. To connect to a Tesla charger, you been to Park in an adjacent spot so you can reach your charging port which screws up Teslas trying to charge. Their chargers are designed for Teslas and they will need to redesign the parking spots or lengthen the cables which is a major expense,.

Not yet. When I spoke to Rivian CS back in January questioning why I was charged to use one of their Waypoint L2 chargers (now up to the host site to determine price) Rivian will start charging for using a RAN charger starting in April 2023, so next month. No specific date was available at the time.

Tx I 10 between El Paso is scarce for non Teslas and old ass chargers for Teslas. Would not try to make that trip without a Tesla. And then when you get to El Paso Tesla and Electrify America are often full

They said 600 locations by the end of this year back in late 2021. They will be lucky to get to 100 by the end of this year, it will be 2025 at the earliest to get to their target, very disappointing.

It's gonna be a long time before RAN ramps up. Tesla has been at it for 10 years. Plus, the late entrants will have a harder time getting enough capacity from the grid. And finally, it's really expensive to roll out and maintain. So, years before we see a robust RAN

They started in 2021 so they have time and are way behind their own estimates. EA managed to rollout hundreds of locations per year.

@@GA-wq8xq If installing chargers was all Rivian (and Tesla) did, they probably could rollout hundreds of locations per year, however, unlike EA Rivian has been kinda busy also rolling out 3 different EV models.
@GA-wq8xq
@GA-wq8xq Жыл бұрын
@@chuckm260 yes the factory has been busy rolling out vehicles. However a different department would be handling site selection and installation of the network so they can do two things at the same time. If it was unrealistic then a mere 16 months ago they should not have stated 600 locations by the end of this year. I think 100 a year is realistic now so 2028 to finish what they started.

It seems like we've already checked out of EA's network because they suck.... Myself included. Maybe EA will wake up and quickly improve their reliability. RAN will not be as huge as Tesla's but if some magic docks can fill some of the gaps, we'll be in good shape. EVgo is another reliable network and hope they can ramp up too. It's a shame EA got all that money from the diesel-gate settlement and half to show for it. Maybe another charging operator should take over it and improve them with the charging infrastructure funds.

so...out of the box thinking - Rivian needs Tesla's charging network, and Tesla needs Rivian's awesome truck. (The Cybertruck is UGLY) Some sort of merger seems like it would significantly increase the competitive advantage of both companies? I can imagine this might seem like blasphemy to some people. Elon has gone off the rails. As a business decision, it makes sense...

Rivian should just give up on the RAN. It’s not a core competency and other networks are being built up quickly. I don’t see the point. As for networks being built in useful places for locals, GM is about the only one doing so. They are getting dealers to put them in places like ballparks and the like. As one who has a daughter that plays soccer in college and before I know all about long road trips to out of the way places. Should be able to get to the game, plug in for the two hours of game and head home. The charger doesn’t even need to be super fast to get a good charge in a couple hours.
@GA-wq8xq

You should not have to rely on Tesla to help with non Tesla charging, you should criticize Rivian for being so slow at rolling out.

Why fight Tesla and make your own charging network wasting billions of dollars. Just make a deal with Tesla and open up their network and focus on building trucks and suvs. Maybe add apple carplay and stop the madness of making your own UI. Someone needs to make the execs of EA do a cross country trip in an EV using their network they will quickly see they are a fail.
