I've had my Carl-5 for 25 years and it's still going strong. Sharpening everything from pastel-, coloured-, wax- and graphite pencils without any issues. The bite marks does not bother me. I just ordered a box of 20 of those Apsara sharpeners from a retailer in India. It was only $7.50 with free shipping. Can't wait for it. EDIT: It's six months later. I have eceived my Apsaraa and they only work with pencils made from good quality wood. On the other hand I bought various sharpeners that uses the same blade designs that are in the Maped. They are the Helix and Staedtler Noris. And they are the best for colour pencils. I replaced my Carl Angel-5 with a cheap M+R lever sharpener. It gives a better point and has soft jaws that does not leave bite marks in the wood.

As a newspaper editor, I used a myriad of pencils, depending on the task. When I did a telephone interview, I found myself sharpening pencils constantly throughout the interview. My go-to sharpener was my Panasonic KP-110 (which I still use), but I wanted a quieter hand-held to augment the electric. Research led me to the KUM Long-Point. After having used three Kums over a period of years, I never saw the benefit of the device, since my 89-cent WalMart sharpener always out-performed the Kum.

The Aspera shown here is the one with the stop (its that diagonal piece under the blade) intended to prevent over sharpening. There are versions without the stop which allow the sharpest point. Or you can cut the stop out with a pen knife quite easily.

The Big Triple is in my shopping list! It's worth mentioning that the Prismacolor sharpener isn't really meant for long points on graphite pencils but for squishy easy to break wax based color pencils. The idea behind it is that instead of twisting the pencil, you twist the sharpener reducing the risk of damaging the fragile pencil while sharpening. That's why you shouldn't use it on graphite pencils.

Excluding electric and stationary pencil sharpeners, the KUM are the best with M+R chasing for the 1st place. KUM not only makes the perfect sharpeners, but also provides way more, for way less money. The inexpensive, common plastic Long Point sharpener, is a great example!!! That sharpener, puts perfect long points and only costs 0.50 cents... That's crazy.. Puts in a shame, hundreds of other brands and sharpeners, which cost way more, but provide so little...

I like the Kume gor its conical point. I do not yet own one but admire. Currently I use a mill file and pocket knife. I can spend as much time as necessary to achieve a needle pont. Mill files vary according to how much you are willing to spend. Feel the texture first before buying because some are better than others. It doesnt have to be amill file, there are other patterns that grip even better. The file is only for the graphite portion of the lead. The sharp pocket knife is for removing the cedar wood. Thanks for your toil in producing this vidio. Enjoyed.

There is something to be said about manually sharpening with knife and file. It can be a stress reducer. As long as you are not in a hurry, it's great. I am a bit floored. I wanted some views on good pencil sharpeners especially for coloured pencils... and what do I find? Apsara---- the sharpeners that come free with my son's pencils are somewhat up on the chart there. We just throw them away here in India. We also can buy them here loose for less than a dime a piece. BTW Apsara means heavenly nymph in Hindu mythology (the naughty and sexy kind).
@RixCanDoit8 жыл бұрын
So they are sexy pencils? Sometimes the better sharpeners are the cheap stuff you use to prop up your kitchen table. :-) The Apsara pencil sharpeners that came with the Platinum had the 'stop' and made for a very nice long point for such a cheap sharpener. As for color pencils, I dunno. Those color cores can be pretty soft and one little catch and they break. My next video I will use those new Blackwing color pencils to test my sharpeners with them. Have no other need for those color pencils so why not?

@RixCanDoit8 жыл бұрын
The video isn't about drawing at all. It's about sharpeners that can produce a nice long point. A long point is great for WRITING. It is also good for drawing IF that happens to be how you like your pencils. Every artist is different. But again, this isn't even about drawing. The fact that I draw isn't a factor. I'm also one who writes a lot and likes to do so with pencils.

Not writing or drawing. Pencil sharpening. The writing or drawing is up to you. You wanted someone to explain why a longer point is better, so I answered you that it is better for those who WRITE or those who happen to like them for drawing also. This was FANTASTIC - the best demo I've ever seen on UTube - all the focused close-ups were wonderdful - how did you do that & know the focus was right?. Being deaf, all the talking heads waving things around aren't much help. Yours was incredibly helpful. Thank you so much. Being deaf I missed all the commentary, but with the great close-up demonstrations, I at least saw what each sharpener could do. Which did you recommend - I guessed the cranked one? Which of the hand-held ones do you like best? Thanks again, Maggie
@RixCanDoit9 жыл бұрын
+Grace Birdsong Thanks. Yes, I prefer the cranked one. Longest point ever! My favorite is the Helix A5 (UK). Similar to Carl, except A5 has adjustable point length setting. Hand-held? The Triple one, where you can custom make your point. Second would be the KUM Long Point sharpener.
@trishfitzpatrick20668 жыл бұрын
I have a great sharpener called the "Desert Song" (who thinks up these NAMES!?) and it is exactly like the Carl Angel described here. It does a very good job with long points on graphite tools but caution must be taken if you are sharpening a softer material such as watercolor pencils. I am assuming that the Angel and the Desert Song are using the same machining. But long points are quite impractical on the watercolor pencils- they are very likely to crumble leaving you with a useless sharpener since the tips break inside the sharpener. I often lose my tips that way and must fix it by poking in the mechanism until I can scrape out the wasted lead. Just a thought.
@RixCanDoit8 жыл бұрын
Then you might like the Helix from UK that is similar to Carl but has 5 adjustments. You can set it to do short points.
@shaziariazkhan25418 жыл бұрын
What camera you are using for filming
@susanbradford45438 жыл бұрын
You missed the point (no pun intended) of the Prismacolor sharpener. It is designed for colored pencils and watercolor pencils which are both softer leads than graphite, so a long sharp point will break easily. A long sharp point is bad point just begging to break in colored and watercolor pencils. As per my Prismacolor rep, the sharpener is designed so you can turn the sharpener around the pencil and keep your hand and pencil still. This avoids lots of breakage of colored pencils & watercolor pencils. I use watercolor pencils often and swear by the Prismacolor sharpener. I think you gave it a bad review because you did not know its intended use.
@RixCanDoit8 жыл бұрын
Perhaps. But the advertising also says it is great for graphite. While it sharpens just fine, it isn't the best for graphite and my focus was on sharpening graphite to a long point, something you point out is not a good thing for color and I agree. :-)

Can you tell me how well the Carl Angel-5 works on Stabilo Carb-Othello pastel pencils? I’ve been looking for a good sharpener for this type of pencil for a long time.
@RixCanDoit7 жыл бұрын
Couldn't tell you. I don't have any Stabilo Pastel pencils to test it with. I'm not sure I'd want to do pastel or color pencils in a crank sharpener.
@ernesto19567 жыл бұрын
I’ve been using electric sharpeners on pastel pencils for the past twenty years or so, and the more work I do with them, the faster they wear out. They’re terrific when they are brand new. Then gradually they start to go bad. The biggest problem with them is, if the point breaks off inside the machine, then I would end up having to dig it out with a metal scratch awl. That type of abuse would lead to a rapid decline such that I would need to buy a new sharpener every two months or so. Finally it got so expensive that I had to switch to using a utility knife and an emory board. When my pastel pieces used to sell for more money, I could justify the cost of the electric sharpeners, but not now.
@ernesto19567 жыл бұрын
Update. I just got my new Carl Angel-5 today and it works like a dream, compared to the way I’ve been doing it before. It works well with the Carb-Othello pastel pencils, and, the good news is, if the point breaks off inside the sharpener, it is easy to open it up and get it out. If this sharpener can last me two months, it will be well worth it buying 6 of them per year. Anyway, I thoroughly recommend and endorse this sharpener.

Forgot to mention the "bite" marks with the Angel 5 - ruins the look of all the high quality pencils. Do yourself a favour and get the premium Carl Angel 5 which has rubber padded grippers and transfer the better mechanism of the standard Angel 5 into the premium unit. (strange how the mechanism of the premium is inferior by a long way to the standard Angel 5 mechanism). This way you have the best, most consistent sharpener without those infuriating bite marks. Great vid BTW.

I would just like to clarify a few things for all interested viewers; Keeping in mind that this video was published in '2015,' prices may have changed. 'Blick Art Supplies,' would not charge you $9.00 for shipping. Standard shipping cost for the 'General, Little Red All-Art Pencil Sharpener' is $4.50. Blick also offers free shipping on orders of $35.00 or more, which our host neglected to mention. You also have the option of shopping at one of Blicks 60 stores across the country. NO! I am not employed by Blicks, I just happen to like their large selection, and their prices are far better than 'Amazon.' Speaking of which, Amazon offers free shipping on orders of $25.00 or more, or if you are a Prime Member which our host neglected to mention. We wouldn't want to mislead the viewers, would we??!! I hope that I have been able to clarify a few things for everyone. Take care and GOD Bless!!!! SuperSniperSal USMC Disabled Vet
@RixCanDoit6 жыл бұрын
Your "host" is not in the business of misleading viewers. I'm not an advertiser for Amazon nor Blicks. With that said, Blicks charged me way too much for shipping small single items and I contacted them about this and they stuck to their guns at charging such a high cost. If they changed their shipping charges, then apparently others complained and it got changed. Good. As for free shipping for orders $35 and over, that's pretty standard. And yes, I use Prime with Amazon, but that still costs $99 a year so you have to determine how much shipping you think you'll need for a year. That's something everyone needs to figure out for themselves, rather than from a pencil review video. LOL!
@RixCanDoit6 жыл бұрын
Oh, and don't forget all the FREE advertising Blicks is getting from my videos. Notice that my INTRO ends with me sharpening a pencil right below the word "Blick". You'd think they would offer me free shipping just for that alone. ;-b
@RixCanDoit6 жыл бұрын
Oh, BTW, just bought some pencils from DickBlick today and it turns out that you only get free shipping on $35 or more IF they have a special. It requires a code. Since there is a code today, and I bought $35 worth of goodies, I got free shipping. But this is NOT an everyday shipping scenario there. You need a code.
