How crazy might that be, to be living in a city with no metro, and suddenly have an almost complete system literally overnight! Happy for the Riyadh residents

If they only decide to build up the metro in Mecca, rather than 1 week people mover during Hajj :)

they also have a bus network now, it's pretty impressive considering they had absolutely nothing literally yesterday. around 10 years to build 6 metro lines is really fast

It's crazy that the Saudi Arabian government wouldn't gradually open the metro. Petro-state megalomania I guess.

I think it’s better, this is our first metro and will shape how we think of metros if it wasn’t a perfect opening ppl won’t use public transportation as much

0:39 Each metre of this metro cost 200,000 dollars to build XD But it looks SOOO cool!
@KyrilPGАй бұрын
200 million per kilometer isn't particularly excessive, except if it's elevated, sure. But an underground metro is usually between 125 and 225 million per kilometer in most of Europe. Sadly, that's the cost per kilometer for above ground transit in most US cities...
@EdwardM-t8pАй бұрын
200 million per kilometer of modern subway is cheap, cheap, cheap, as in inexpensive, not poor quality. The United States struggles to build tramways (light rail) that cheap!

Suprising that there is no automated metro network than is bigger than this it means that the grand paris express lines alone (without including line 1,4 and later 13) will also be one the biggest if not the biggest one once completed ; since it will add 200 km of lines
@AL5520Ай бұрын
I think this record reffers to a fully automated system. Almost all systems are only partially automated and until now only handful of small systems were eligible for this record. Paris will have in total more kilometers of automated lines but it will still have non automated ones. If you try hard enough you can usually find a record to boast about.

Yeah, the new City for All weekly news is out! The Thessaloniki metro is very nice and like a museum visit. Also for next week's news, Paris RER E Western extension to Nanterre will begin allday operations with continuous trains from the Eastern branches. Since the opening some months ago, there were only 4 trains per hour each way from 10AM to 4PM running like shuttles between Haussmann Saint-Lazare and Nanterre la Folie to work out all potential issues. The service still won't be running at its maximum potential yet, mostly due to a lack of new trains, but it will have normal operating hours and more trains.

Nice to see that saudi money going into something possible. Btw, in Yerevan, Armenia, we recieved 15 new trolleybuses with in-motion charging. This means frequencies are now higher and trolleybuses reach more places (using the batteries).

Seems like a couple of cities really insist to open their new Metro system in 2024 at the last minute. Riyadh and Thessaloniki are already mentioned here and Ho Chi Minh CIty Metro will open on 22th of December. Bhopal and Indore still say they'll open this year and I couldn't found any recent news (in a language I understand) about the Ahvaz and Qom metro but at least according to Wikipedia they will open in 2024 too. Is that a thing? Networks open in December just to reach their promised target year at the last moment?

Good to see more automated driverless metro systems being built worldwide. It seems insane to do otherwise at this point with the technology so advanced. It would still be like having elevator operators in 2024...

Great episode as always! It seems like the Ghana project is single tracked? I think that's a bad decision. I get why they would do it for a new line with probably small demand. But if, as you say, this is supposed to be an important corridor, I'd have at least prepared the infrastructure (like the big bridge) for double track, even if you still don't put the actual track there until years later. I don't know in other countries, but this has been in practice in Spain for quite a while and it helps a lot to reduce costs: 1 wide bridge is cheaper and requires less bureaucracy than 2 separate bridges.
@cityforallАй бұрын
I was also surprised by this, but I think they just took the cheapest option. And all the problems that this may cause in the future will be handled by someone else.
