Music is a journey of self discovery...and this journey begins with swar Sa. Sa is named as 'Shadaj'. There is no other variation of Sa. It is an 'achal swar'. Sa is never a 'varjit swar' in any raaga. Sa is also known to be Cosmic sound or Universal sound. In the word 'shadaj', 'Sha' means 6 and 'daj' means giver. That is, Shadaj is a giver of 6 more swars namely, R, G, M, P, Dha, Ni Sa is a reference point for all other swars. Practicing Sa by staying on it for one full breath helps to develop a stable, strong, resonant voice. It aids in breath control and also helps in mind-body-breath alignment. Riyaz of Sa has other benefits to offer too. It helps you stay in the 'Here and Now' and is so much like meditation. During practice, you will feel vibrations of this sound in your mind and body. Riyaz of Sa brings calmness, enhances focus and concentration, slows down your heart rate and mental chatter. You feel relaxed and peaceful. Swars are also connected with 7 chakras in our body. Swar Sa is connected with Root Chakra or 'Mooladhaar Chakra'. When you practice swar Sa, close your eyes and visualise a red light at the end of your spine. Red colour represents Root Chakra. Sa can be practiced by humming or also in aakaar. You may sing in swar also. Another pattern to practice is this (Use 'meend' or 'bridge' in the descending notes): S... S R S S G S S M S S P S S D S S N S S S' S Get this one swar Sa right, and you have already built a strong foundation for singing well! Happy practicing! 😊
