If you haven't heard Riz's latest album The Long Goodbye, I cannot recommend enough. It's been my soundtrack to 2020 and is essentially an allegory of the Brexit experience seen through the eyes of British Asian people like myself. The lyrics are absolutely mind-blowing and Riz clearly is at ease blitzing together his own loved experiences with literary references that span the full gambit of English and British culture, mixing in punctionations of historical importance that are frequently overlooked here in Britain. I'm not exaggerating when I say that this album should be studies as an educational source in schools up and down the UK as it gives an accurate picture of the long lasting impact of British Empire. I don't think we've yet seen the best of Ahmed. That's not to say that he hasn't made his mark on UK culture, but it's more of a projection of what this talented individual is capable of creating if we allow him to pursue the trajectory that he has set for himself. The best thing is, Riz is one of many voices emerging from his generation here in the UK, which is worth celebrating. I'm many ways, Riz Ahmed is an icon for what modern British talent represents. Intelligent, political, modern, articulate, genre-straddling creative virtuosity.
