Certainly not as rough as it used to be with a good bit of these men on disability after ten years or so of strenuous back breaking labor. It's still hard work today and more labor intensive than most other industries. It does normally pay well with benefits. Railroad tracks are critical to our supply chain even carrying automobiles today. You don't see those trailers rolling down the interstate anymore with 3 cars on the top and 3 on the bottom because they are travelled by rail in enclosed auto racks. When I was growing up in the 60's you rarely saw a tractor trailer on the highway. Every town had a rail station with a dock and if it didn't it had make shift docks built beside the rails so the cargo could be offloaded into box trucks of whom ever ordered the products inside. Grocers would come and pick up produce etc.
