New R211 Subway Cars in service along the (A) and (C) lines

It has been a year since the standard variant of R211 cars (the R211A) entered service on the (A) line! Since then, twelve trains have entered service. Additionally, the two "open gangway" prototype trains (R211T) entered service on the (C) line on February 1, 2024. Here is a compilation of both the R211As and R211Ts in service.

I’m so glad these Subway cars don’t squeal all the time when stopping or accelerating. Some of the modern train’s constant squealing is annoying. It’s as if the brakes are always engaged. 😖

I don’t think 4-car R211s are needed. The only lines whose stations are only 8 cars long are the Canarsie, Nassau, Jamaica and Myrtle lines. The only rolling stock to consist of 4-car sets are the R143, R160A and R179, only the first one of which is exclusively so and they seem to be enough to me. All the other B Division services, including the G can use 10-car trains. Better than waiting at the wrong section of the platform and missing the train. There are a few more issues, though there is a way to solve them. The M runs via the Chrystie St Connection between the Jamaica and Sixth Ave Lines. The former’s platforms, as mentioned earlier are only 8 cars long whereas the latter’s platforms are 10 cars long. The M could thus be reverted to being brown by terminating at Chambers St and the V could be reintroduced and run the same route as it always did. However, this is a bit exaggerated since trains being 2 cars shorter than the platform isn’t that severe. But it is a way to have all train lengths match those of their platforms. The Rockaway Park Shuttle would be wasteful if full-length trains are used, since it’s stations are some of the least-used in the entire system. However, if Queenslink ever gets built, it could be replaced by a through-service. Finally, the Franklin Ave Shuttle’s platforms are way too short but the line could be relocated underground with full-length platforms and connect to the Crosstown Line, thus eliminating the shuttle.

I am 95% sure that it is possible for all platforms on the Franklin Ave shuttle to be extended to five cars. The only station I'm not sure of is Park Place, since the current very short platform sits between two overpasses, and I'm not sure how high exactly the walls of those overpasses are. Hopefully short enough to allow platform extensions, as those are the only constraints.

I do remember the MTA saying that the R211S (Staten Island) will hit service sometime this month. I would think it’ll do so before Easter weekend, so probably this week or next week.

Also know that there are still people that got time and still haven't been qualified on them yet. I've also been told that the braking range on the master controller on the 211s isn't as wide as on older new tech trains.

​@@DouglasWells-el5dvThe N and W are not going to get new trains. They're going to be fully R68s and R68As. However, MTA has secured enough R211s now to retire every R46, directly or indirectly. So for sure the R46s days are numbered.
