Just a clarification Ogg Vorbis is not just a European format. It's a free and open source container format unlike WAV or mp3. But like you said no one uses it. It's only in audacity jut to satisfy peopl like Richard Stahlman. That said great video, was very helpful in helping me startup my podcast.

Ogg Vorbis is not a European compression, it is a free compression under a free license, where MP3 is proprietary. Maybe the free software foundation has a bigger presence in Europe or something, but for sure it is a valid compression for use anywhere. Most, if not all, standard media players can handle it (see VLC Media Player). As for common video editing software, I don't own any of the proprietary software so I can't attest to that, but free video editors such as OpenShot definitely support Ogg Vorbis.

.mp3 is a compressed audio format that is small in size and easy to load and download, the quality of equipment and editing is important ( like 1080p videos are sharp on .mp4) but it is compressed and lose a little, WAVs are "original" but they are massive and take forever to load, and download. like downloading a blueray dvd with extra features, .mp3 is good enough for generally everything but they are making a format that is both small but keeps all the richness of the music and stuff, there are special devices to carry the format and your whole library.

Hi RichReally great tutorial. Enjoyed it emensly. Any chance you could put something together to show how to adjust Audacity's settings to allow for an audio interface such as the Scarlett 2i2? I have just bought one and I don't appear to be getting the correct sounds from my mic when hooked up to the laptop and running Audacity. I am fairly sure that I have not done something correctly, from a settings perspective, but I have no idea what that might be. There doesn't appear to be a you Tube video explaining in detail, just how to set up correctly, which surprises me, especially given how prevalent & popular the Sacarlett stuff isJust a thought. Tom

Quick question = how to remove (inverted) noise, i.e. not the low DB but the high DB peaks instead or just "carve" them to bit lower DB ? For example spikes with over -3 DB are making sound get damaged so want to remove/reduce those, you know the "hissing/snoring" sound of stuff.. Any way to fix that problem ? Equalizer of removing high pitch noise kinda works but don't wanna make the audio different in sounding, just want to remove the "high power spike" snores You might have that in the video but, kinda don't want to go through ALL the features in order to get that one in particular Thanks

Totally not tech savvy, I want to make an EDM song. Please help me understand one thing. I will take music from an opensource site, and will add it to vocal that I will record. My questions is, should I record the vocals as one file or multiple, and if multiple (which I prefer,) how to join them as one vocal track in audacity? Since it is edm, the words will be few and spaced, I want to add different effects to it (echo, repeated lyrics, etc) so I am not sure if I can do that by singing continuously with spaces, as one vocal file. Please help on how to achieve this.

We have a video on how to use the noise reduction feature on our channel if you're interested! All you have to do is select a part of the track that contains only noise and set it as your noise profile. Then you apply the noise reduction effect and Audacity will automatically remove it from the rest of your track.

Hi Rich, just watched your tutorial many thanks. I am very much a beginner so will watch it again, a question for you I have a book on Amazon I want to make into an audio book, I have purchased a Blue Snowball mic for this project and would like to have music as an intro and out of a chapter and possibly in the background as I talk would I just import all music and use as and when or only have one piece of music undermy audio to use at any one time? Ifvthat makes sense! Also should I record the book (it is about 1 hour long) in one go inserting music as I go or save individual chapters, finding hard to get my head around how to go about it, many thanks any help is appreciated!
@RichJohnstun10 жыл бұрын
I would record the book in chapters, this will make editing easier. Smaller pieces make things much easier to work with. Record the book, then import the music and edit it together. The music will come in as a separate track that you can edit. It should be pretty simple and a great learning experience. Somewhere in the video I remember showing how to create a volume envelope so you can see how to fade the music in and out. Good luck.

I have a bunch of old tapes that I want to put on cd. Do I record one side completely, pause, turn the tape over and continue, or do each side individually? I want each track to be separate. I assume that this will occur when I edit the dead space out. I plan on pausing the tape to allow some extra dead space for editing. Do I need a USB/ 3.5 male cable, or will the straight 3.5 - 3.5 male cable do? I have both
@MrMisterPickles10 жыл бұрын
One side at a time or both sides, it really depends on your comfort level. I tend to do both sides in one shot since it's fewer steps. I wouldn't bother pausing the tape, you'll be able to see the breakpoints between songs easy enough without giving yourself extra time. The straight male to male has been fine when I've done cassettes, I use USB with a turntable for vinyl.

No, I wouldn't record in stereo. Stereo is really when you're trying to create spacial awareness in the audio and I wouldn't consider it necessary for an audio book. Most audio books I've listened too are mono and low bit rate to make for easy downloading.

Can you tell me what am i doing wrong?
@RichJohnstun9 жыл бұрын
+devon howard I'm guessing this is going to be really tricky to get working. Most recording software is looking for an input coming via an external port and device (headphone/mic jack or USB jack). Because you are trying to record something coming in from an online resource I'm not sure how you're going to get that working. You might look around to see if can find a program that will let you make a virtual input. The only thing I could think is if you used two computing device and had the output of one hitting the other as an input. I've done with when trying to record and mix a skype interview.

Hi Rich, thanks for getting back to me. This is one of the problem am having...when i try capturing sound using Audacity to record. It keeps on asking me about the sample rate when ever i try open a file but now after setting the sample rate its fine to open files....but when i try record it keeps asking about setting the sample rate. Anyway reading your last comment i tried to set up my windows 7 following your advice on setting the sound recording using a mixer that was online via a youtube video, but cannot see one on my computer settings. i can only see a mic settings and a line in settings...any advice? like should i connect the line in or mic settings?
@devoncoward93709 жыл бұрын
Also when i go into my settings, it is only showing that 1 of speakers are connected...is that a problem? Should that be like that? Also i was thinking is it possible for me to plug a laptop into my desk top and play music into my desk top and record it onto desk top? Reason for this is cos my laptop has ran out of space and my desk top sound is to low to jear my my mixing properly/
@RichJohnstun9 жыл бұрын
+devon howard Hi Devon, I'm pretty sure you aren't able to go directly from the audio output of one PC into the mic input of another. You might give it a try. I'm pretty certain you won't hurt anything. This is where my knowledge starts to hit some limits as I'm far from an audio expert. What I ended up doing when I was trying to record Skype calls was running Skype on one machine, running the audio output from that machine into a mixer and running the mixer into the machine I was using for the recording. So, in short I was bridging the issue with physical hardware. Sorry I don't have a better answer for you, but any solution I'd give you would just be a complete guess on my part.

This is working great ,but the only problem I'm having is when I have my first track on I have a delay on my second track when I sing. I tried to adjust the latency but it still does it. WHY!!!!!!!!

I'm trying to record my band and I'm wondering if its possible to get audacity to recognize and take input from an audio interface, especially if I'm recording drums where multiple mics are required. Would that be one big track or lots of individual tracks? Any help would be appreciated.

To my knowledge, you aren't going to get it to record multiple tracks simultaneously like I believe you're looking for. That's far beyond the capability of the tool (it is free after all). You'd run your mics through a mixer and then have a single mix that Audacity could record, but that isn't going to give you the ability to tweak the individual mics like I'm assuming you're looking to do. There may be other free open source tools that have that capability, but I don't have any recommendations.
