One guy keeps his figs in ground, cuts them back to 10 inches in the fall. Dumps a crap ton of mulch (at least 8 inches) on them, and they survived a negative 15 F. winter.

That was easily the most thorough guide to growing figs (and other exotic fruit trees) in the GTA. I really appreciate this video. I'd like to grow my fig tree in-ground. Are there any methods that don't involve digging it back up, whether partially or fully, and having it produce figs reliably every year? I'm not concerned with dieback so long as it produces every year.

Here in Denver CO I'm learning that small fruit is the way to go for a short season. Small eggplants, cherry tomatoes and yes small to medium figs. Do have challenges dealing with radiant high altitude 🌞 sun, dry winds. Providing shelter from this elements is key. Peace.

I had four Chicago Hardy fig bushes growing in the ground in Englewood CO and it was frustrating because of the early and late freezes. Now I've recently moved to Port Charlotte Florida and I dug the figs up and took them with me. Right now they seem to developing a new root system because they are just sitting there hardly putting any new growth on. I dug a persimmon tree up too and took it with me -- it's putting on lots of new growth.

You are a great resource: I am responding per your request: I have a white Italian honey fig tree that my son bought me this year. It is in ground in a sunny spot in my Long Island NY south shore yard. Since I have less success with potted plants I planted it. I have not had success with smaller cheaper figs overwintering in the past. Honestly, I’m nervous about wrapping it (when) & in wrapping it (when) & the details about needing a fertilizer product. Thank you for addressing these questions GinaB

Im going with the miracle grow shake n feed 12-4-8 as my main fig fertilizer. Tons of micro nutrients and the benefits of organic and inorganic fertilizers. 3 times fer season. One before or during dormency so it is ready to boost figs once awake. I think it saves some steps with that fertilizer alone. I do have some neptune harvest liquid fertilizer and also dry kelp meal. Might get some bone meal for the added phosphorous but idk about mixing two fertilizer can cause plant burn

The pot is maybe 40 or 50 gallons on wheels. . All she could tell me is to water it everyday and put it in the garage in the winter. I need some advice, please.

We recently moved to a home in Atlanta, Georgia last summer. Surprise! There is a fig tree! We didn’t see any breba fruit. The fruit is just starting to ripen to a purplish color, but the ants are beginning to swarm our fruit. There are bees and wasps as well. How do I tell what type of fig we have? Also is there a way to deter insects while we allow our figs to ripen?

I have two large fig trees ( 4m high, X 3mm wide) figs, they both sprung up in the pot of a rose tree, which I bought ! Now they both produce hundreds of small figs which are about the size of the top of a lady's thumb and these do not ripen. However, there was one exception and it only happened last year it was one low branch produced one edible fig which was about golfball size. Now I have once cut these two trees back to only 3 main stems but their original size , I live in S of UK and in (say) March I will again cut these trees back and try to graft to themsection of a normal black fig which is only aboy 2m in diameter but does produce good black figs. Any thoughts on the above ; especially on how seeds of a fig may have been in the soil of the shop bought rose?

Are you more in the northern GTA or southern GTA? I'm in the southern part and it doesn't drop to -30C here anymore. Seems like -25C, maybe -27C is the worst I could expect? I was thinking of trying to grow figs for the first time next year, and picking a hardy variety (ex Chicago hardy) and then wrapping it in a bunch of insulating layers (including straw or leaves) and hope that's enough? That way the roots are undisturbed and hopefully a good amount of the main branches/trunk can survive?

minus 30 in toronto. Seriously since when? - 13 was the coldest recorded in Toronto in 2021 and minus 19 in 2020. in any case, many people on my zone pushers facebook group plant figs in their backyards in toronto and have new growth every year, after winter dieback, and a shrub full of fruits by mid or late summer. Sounds better than potting.
