Sonic the Hedgehog (ソ ニ ッ ク ・ ザ ・ ヘ ッ ジ ホ ッ グ Sonikku za Hejjihogu?), Better known as Sonic 2006, [3] is a game with the main character Sonic for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles, released in 2006 (in November for the Xbox 360 in December for the PS3). The game marks the hedgehog's 15th anniversary. [4] The main playable characters are "Sonic the Hedgehog", Shadow the Hedgehog and the new character Silver the Hedgehog, a time traveler. The villains of this game are Mephiles The Dark, Iblis, Dr. Eggman and Solaris. Sonic the Hedgehog follows Sonic's quest to protect Princess Elise after she is kidnapped by her rival Dr. Eggman, while Shadow the Hedgehog faces a supernatural entity and Silver the Hedgehog tries to protect the world from a near cataclysmic event.
Development started in 2004, led by Sonic co-creator Yuji Naka. Sonic Team sought to create an attractive game in the vein of superhero films like Batman Begins, hoping that it would advance the series with a realistic tone and various styles of gameplay. Problems developed after Naka resigned to form his own company, Prope. The team split up to work on the Wii game Sonic and the Secret Rings (2007), resulting in Sonic the Hedgehog being rushed into the holiday season. It was released for the Xbox 360 in November 2006 and for the PlayStation 3 the following month. Wii and Windows versions have been canceled. Downloadable content with new single-player modes was released in 2007.
Sonic the Hedgehog received praise in pre-release presentations, as journalists believed he could return to the series' roots after years of mixed reviews. However, it was a critical failure. The reviewers criticized their load times, camera system, history, stability and controls. It has often been described as one of the worst games in the series. In 2010, Sega removed Sonic the Hedgehog from retailers, following the decision to remove all Sonic games with below average Metacritical scores to increase brand value. His failure led him to rethink the direction of the series; future games ignored his tone and most of the characters.
The story of this game takes place in Soleanna (inspired by Venice, the famous Italian city), a city-kingdom that is probably in Europe, since the architecture of the city is very reminiscent of this continent.
It all starts at the Festival do Sol, where Princess Elise appears in public and is attacked by Eggman and her robots, as the villain is interested in a secret that involves the princess, the "Flames of Disaster". Dr. Eggman needs the Flames to finally conquer the world, but that will only happen if the princess cries. Elise ends up being saved by Sonic, but Eggman takes advantage of the hedgehog's carelessness and manages to kidnap the princess. It is soon discovered that the Flames of Disaster were created in the laboratory and that Elise's father, Soleanna's monarch, financed the project, but an accident happens and the scientists and Elise's father end up dead. On her deathbed the king makes Elise swear never to tell that secret, never to cry, to become a queen and to govern Soleanna wisely.
Other characters appear, such as Silver, a silver hedgehog who came from a chaotic future that was destroyed by Iblis, a wicked monster that torments that future, and Shadow, now definitely on the side of the heroes, with the goal of defeating Mephiles the Dark (in Portuguese Mephiles the Gloomy) and prevent him from joining Iblis, to prevent the birth of Solaris.
The game takes place before Sonic Rush, as Sonic doesn't have the boost and Blaze has no idea who Sonic is
