I just wanna say that Namjoon's been really into art for years and he definitely did know what still life paintings are, but he had probably never heard the term in English, that's all. He said in the Magazine Film for this album that the term in Korean directly translates to "inanimate object," so it doesn't carry the same potential for the double (I think in the song he uses for even a triple) meaning. He does a lot of wordplay in his lyrics, so he used "still life" as the actual painting type, as the meaning he described in this video (he said he thought about how his life has been captured in still frames and you can see moments of his life online even when they're in the past), and also "still life" as in "I'm still alive."

RM knows what still life is, the dude loves art, he explained that he chose to interpret it this way because it's what came to his mind as a non native English speaker, for him it gave the meaning of "still alive" :) Still life painting in Korean are just called "inanimate objects" so he said that felt the title in english gave him more room to take liberties with the word and concept.

I agree. In french, still life is "nature morte" which means dead nature. Same type of painting, but different language and different meaning.

There is a lot to know about the painter Yun. What I was most struck by is that he grew up during the Korean War and in the years after when Korea was a military dictatorship. He had many near death experiences but also was jailed and tortured on numerous experiences and almost executed for standing up for his beliefs. Namjoon has a painting by him hanging in his living room that he looks at every day.

I loved his tiny desk too, such a good introduction to his solo work for new/casual listeners. It’s really evident in his album indigo how much he’s inspired by paintings and artwork - he’s known for going to museums and galleries very regularly, and dreams of opening/sponsoring his own in the future. He’s said before that his love for art has become so big that it’s starting to rival his love for music - which makes his ways of combining them in Yun and Still Life even more meaningful to me.

With Yun, the lyrics that says “you’re nothing without your team” is actually what other people are telling him, which is why he says fuck that shit. Because after all, he is not just nothing on his own, he is Kim Namjoon, a strong intelligent human on the inside and bts isn’t all he is. Basically for a few of the lines at the start it’s what others are telling him, like “listen to me, or you’ll lose it all”

I definitely recommend checking out the entire album Indigo as the songs are all so different, and maybe also mono. Mono is one of my all time favourite albums for the lyrics, it is such an empathetic and comforting album. I'm pretty sure RM had heard of "still life" paintings before, but he called that style of painting by a Korean word or phrase. "Still life" and "still alive" is a play on word that works with the English term for "still life" paintings, but you won't get that same meaning/pun/interpretation from the Korean word for it. For example, in Korean, love is sarang 사랑 and person/people is saram 사람 the only difference between them is the final letter, the ㅇis pronounced ng in love, but the ㅁ is pronounced m in person. These are Korean words RM has played with in lyrics due to their similarity, he uses that to talk about the nature of humans and love. But that play on words doesn't work in English because there is no relation between the sounds and meanings of love and person/people. I think he was surprised by the English words for this kind of painting because of how it offered him a totally different perspective to the Korean word for it due to the way he could play with the sounds. Remember, puns don't translate, which is why some BTS lyrics might not seem to make sense and connections may be drawn between totally different words and ideas. RM especially loves playing with language in this way so you encounter it a lot in his lyrics.

he knows what a still life painting is... he just says that for him who speaks english as a second language, the words evoke another layer of meaning. he plays on the word still as in "even now" and "not moving". sometimes people who learn a language later in life notice patterns, meaning and sounds in a way someone who is a native speaker wouldn't. it's not about him not understanding that it's the name of the genre, it's just that not every language has an exact word for word translation for it. for example in my native language it's called something like "silent painting", which evokes a very different connotation than "still life". he's talking about realizing the connotations of the english name of the genre.

Hi, loving your reactions as always! Your BTS reaction journey became something for me and my husband to connect over daily while we were staying with our child at the hospital, trying to forget our fears. Your commentary based on your own likes/experiences/knowledge and your growing knowledge of the BTS members is a real pleasure, and I know that you read comments and pick up more facts every time! About Namjoon/RM and "still life", I think you might be happy to learn that he is an extreme art buff (Google Namjoon/Namjooning + Rothko if you like, btw!), and even though he can't express himself as elegantly in English as in Korean, those who are deeply familiar with his mind know that he is always using his linguistic skills to approach familiar terms from a new perspective, often by mixing languages or using homonyms to twist their meaning. Because of that, and because of a promotional shot for Indigo where he appeared to frame himself as a stilleben object rather than a model in a portrait, I guessed in advance that the song "Still Life" would contain the twists "still alive" and/or "it's still life, though, better than not being alive". With your mind, I hope for you to get to enjoy playing this game of predictions in the future, based on your knowledge of him and the other BTS members! Have a great week with Indigo!

Just a comment on "still life", it's just the English term which is different and that he discovered at that time. For example still-life is translated as nature morte in French which litterally means 'dead nature'. The Korean term is 정물 which just has the meaning of still/inanimate "object", so it does not have that "life" dimension and does not allow the wordplay/analogy. So just to clarify that he did not discover still-life paintings on that day, just the English terminology.

Still life is said differently in Korea. (정물 it means an object that cannot move by itself) So, from his point of view, whose native language is Korean, the word "still life" may have taken on a new meaning. It reminds me of the saying that learning another language is like opening another world.

RM's Global Age is 28, and Korean age is 29, and he would be 30 on January 1st, because actual birthdates aren't counted. It's counted on January 1st. His real birthdate is September 12, 1994. His whole album has songs similar, I think any song from his album would fit with NPR. But yes, they are great songs, and I think he chose them because of the collaborations. People in America know who Erikah Badu is, and Anderson Paak, more than they would know the Korean singers. I think you will like the song with Tablo, he's from the group Epik HIgh that is still an active group. They debuted in 2003. Tablo is a great rapper, and RM and SUGA both were inspired to rap when they first heard Epik High, and so it's come full circle that they are working together. Here is the song, and there are interview clips about their collaboration at the end of the video. You can play it or skip it, but the translations are accurate.
