‘Do You’ isn’t about RM being cocky, he was facing a lot of criticism on being an idol at that time and was being boxed in. This song is expressing that he is not any genre but himself. He brought up those American Artists bc they changed the hiphop game from what it use to be. He is saying ‘if I am not hiphop bc I call myself an idol and wear makeup, then what about those other real hiphop artists that wear skirts and skinny jeans’ etc, are they not still hiphop? What he is trying to say is hiphop isn’t what you wear but what you can express, why can he not be considered hiphop when hiphop artist can do these things. Understand?

The song is talking about doing you, so its also showing the huge plastic surgery rates south korea has; the difficulty the youngsters face of being just them and not be dragged by their societal standards.

People used to criticize RM and judge him because he didn't "look" like your typical idol so they called him ugly etc. Then those in the hip hop and rap world made fun of him and the rest of the rap line for being in an idol group. You can see a small piece of that in the interview where BFree insults him and Suga, but others like him would say that because because of how he dressed and being an idol meant he wasn't a real rapper. There is also a video where RM is reading all these hate comments from people and he basically tells the audience to just wait he'll prove everyone wrong. Which he does. This video and Joke to me are really important because you see his versatility as a rapper as an artist in general and the way he plays with language and wordplay on top of his flow is really outstanding. I'm glad you guys finally got the chance to react to this. Thank you 💜

The Message : You talked about the part of RM’s message where what you wear, etc. not making you better than another person, they may do something differently, not criticizing others, staying in your own lane etc. I felt like there was another half to the message. It’s also don’t compare yourself to others and think you are LESS because of those same things. That doing things like drugs or having surgery to fit in or feel better about yourself isn’t what you need. So looking down OR up at others = NOPE! It’s a great precursor to Love Yourself. Namjoon deeply respects hip hop culture and always pays hommage to the artists he looked up to growing up. He's not jabbing at asap or kanye in any way. His point was basically saying how people would make fun of him being an idol and what he wore. So in his head, if i'm not considered hip hop for "wearing skinny jeans" than what about kanye and asap? Kanye is known for fashion and is a designer so why are people separating rm from hip hop? Because in the haters words: "he's an idol." This whole song is him basically saying let people do whatever the fuck they want. Let them dress the way they want, let them sing and rap the way they want, let them live however they choose. Do you.

Do remember this is from his first mixtape that came out soon after the hip hop community insisted on telling him (and Suga) that they weren’t hip hop because they were idols, and general public was saying he wasn’t good looking enough to be an idol. So he was having a total identity crisis. Since it’s from his mixtape, it’s not BTS, they’re allowed to do stuff in their videos they wouldn’t normally do with the group. Yoongi did the same in his Agust D mixtape videos and songs. In a way so did Hobi, but since his came later, he talked about his stuff from a way less angsty perspective. His newest mixtape Mono is excellent too and it’s a great way to see his growth artistically and as a person.

Bro, he was really aggressive back then with his lyricism bcs of the amount of hate he got out of nothing. Nowadays, he knows he could only focus on receiving the love he got. Like he said, ARMY made him love himself. That's why if you see the difference with his mixtapes RM and mono, oof. The amount of growth, glow up, is surreal. It's more than just his cocky game. the lyrics as well as the visuals on the MV has more meaning to it too. RM is like explaining how in this industry (Music and Showbiz) alot of people would always want something from you, they expect something from you at the same time wants to keep you in this box by categorizing you on certain genre or group of people. They want you to play your persona and live by it. there's also this line in this song "I'm doi'n me, Just doi'n me, who were you so far? that's right, we were friends. Nothin's everything, everything's nothin'" I'm not 100% sure if I understood this line correctly this whole time, but I think it has something to do with RM's old friends and some of the people whom he looked up to in the underground Rap scene back then, same people who turned their backs on him, dissed and judged him so easily when he decides to enter Bighit as Kpop group (BTS) these people dismissed RM quickly as if RM betrayed Hip-hop, when it's them who betrayed their friendships. meaning they've been all talk, but look at them now. where are they now? they think highly of themselves in comparison to RM when they, themselves are stuck in their old habits and little world there. this song is referencing on RM's life, thoughts and I think if you internalize it you'll understand, I highly recommend you guys to check out his mixtapes. it'll send you to a whole different RM. the mind and soul of this man id deep DEEP.

Our President is reminding us that we dont have to do this and that just because that's what people want or think you should, we don't have to wear this and that just because you're thinking others will judge you if you do you. Also: RM and SUGA was deeply criticized when they became Idol's, and they keep mocking and questioning them about what they wear and what they look, make up etc. So this also about that. And lastly: March 24 2015 RM to Hiphopplaya interview: "If you look at the album cover, my face is divided in black and white. I wanted to show that I was two-faced. I'm positive sometimes and then negative at other times. I speak of hopes at some points and then forget about it later. You can just see it as something I made by pulling out the various rooms inside myself. I wanted to express the thought of, "There are these many sides inside of me, but in the end, this is me, and you who's listening to this is just you too." I enjoyed India Arie's 'Just Do You'. It's a song that gave a lot of comfort to me when I felt confused. I believe that the message of this song gave a lot of influence towards this mixtape. That's why the song that represents the entire message for this mixtape is -"DO YOU".

RM: It reflects how I feel lately towards those who hate me and criticize me. I used to find it really upsetting and got very angry a long time ago. However, I’ve been able to rise above that a bit more that. I wanted to truthfully add that feeling. This is also the reason behind the lyrics of “If you want to come with me even now, then let’s go.” RM: Honestly, I’m not someone who enjoys cursing. However, I believed that there was an emotion that could only be released through ‘sht’ or ‘fck’. So I used words like those in places that were necessary. It’s not like it was a piece of work that had to go under deliberation. Q: What do you mean exactly when you say that you don’t necessarily have to attack any one? RM: I’m not the type that enjoys attacking. Even if I were to attack, I’m not the type to attack with an immense amount of aggression. However, I’m the type that has to say everything I want to say. No matter what the nuance may be, should I say that it should be resolved through music. Although someone may think “if you were going to attack someone, you should have done it properly” after listening to ‘P.D.D’, but this is my tendency and method.
