dunerinaz....Okay, what if the Computer goes south on the Honda DCT or the Transmission itself breaks? Is the belt system going to be less money to replace over the Honda Talon? I think so! Other machines use the belt system, just because they work well.

@@1gr8oil They work, but saying they work "well" is bit of a stretch.
@1gr8oil5 жыл бұрын
@@pv2xeek Well, depending on how the machine is used, and the type of person using them, the belt system works very well. That's why the CVT system has been around so long on nearly ALL side X sides, as well as snowmobiles. I'll put it this way. A CVT belt will cost around $120.00 to $150.00 to replace, and again in most situations, that is what will fail. What would it cost to replace the Computer that operates the DCT, or the DCT itself. I'm mot saying the DCT is not a bad design, but we don't know at this point how well the DCT will last in this application, where we do know how the CVT systems perform very well in many applications, as they have done for many, many years.

To soften up your throttle jerkiness as you were concerned about. When on a slower trail section. Switch to manual mode and run in a taller gear than you normally or the machine in automatic mode would choose. This will reduce the amount of torque applied in regards to on and off throttle effect.
@xxperkaholicgamerx71964 жыл бұрын
You can’t do that with talons, they’ll kick back in gear. Only can shift down when needed to.

I lug mine in a higher gear sometimes also, just to take some of the throttle jerkiness away. However, it WILL protect the clutches, and automatically downshift if rpms get TOO low. I love my 2019 Talon X. Does it have the plushest ride? No. But, it feels very stable when ripping around turns, and during off camber climbing. I also LOVE how mechanical the machine feels. I always feel “engaged” with it, if that makes sense. I’ve ridden Rzrs, and KRXs, and I prefer the 6-speed transmission, over the belt drive machines. I’ve heard people complain about it lacking power, but I can drift around any turn, at any time. Is it a turbo machine? No. But, it feels quicker than the Polaris XP, to me, even though the HP is basically the same.

I know this video is a year old but I just had the chance to drive one for about 30 miles recently and here are my opinions from a Can Am Commander owner. I was very surprised how rough it was over whoops and light bumps and I have my Commander set at the stiffest setting. Service interval for a Commander is 3000km (1800 miles) compared to this Honda at 600 miles. Felt a bit cramped inside compared to my Commander but it was comfortable nonetheless. I was surprised how loud it was. Everyone complains about the loudness of the Commander but this thing was just as loud if not louder. Fit and finish was very nice. No room from extra buttons for a winch, led lights etc. The instrument cluster is awful! You can't see shit, seriously, very shocked how bad it was especially compared to how awesome the Commander XT cluster is. That's not a little issue. The Honda was very fun to drive and handled corners well at high speeds. I definitely had fun. Honda charges as much as a turbo Polaris or Can Am for a non turbo machine. A lot of people have been having a lot of transmission issues with the first year model so far. Very disappointing considering Honda's reliability reputation. I don't think I'd buy one but I think if you bought this machine you'd be happy.

If I buy a sxs it’ll be this. Fire department owned a Polaris and it was nothing but trouble. Didn’t have an alternator so you actually would have to drive it to charge it. Couldn’t just start it once every week and let it idle. And that belt just sucked. Had to drive it into a shallow creek and one the belt got a bit of moisture on it she would just spin.

@mcs17675 жыл бұрын
The air filter setup is a problem. To clean the air filter you have to remove a large outer cover, which has 12 (I think) strong snap fasteners. Then remove 8 bolts which hold the air filter itself. When you take the large cover off there are 2 big air intakes that go directly to the engine. If you drop something (small parts, or dirt), into the intakes it disappears into oblivion. Also, any kind of an air leak in the big cover allows dirty air directly into the engine bypassing the filter. I've never seen a setup like this on a "dirt" machine.

@@adamneill9237 Thank You for the confirmation. I've never been overly thrilled with CVT. Coming from a wolverine 350 5 spd semi auto to a grizzly 700 CVT there were several issues I wasn't very thrilled about. Having to always be on the throttle just to be in motion seems counter intuitive. (I realize many cvt will freewheel) but the constant engine braking is annoying. Gotta be revving high when I could just be up shifting. Granted my displacement doubled but with a 5 gal capacity and averaging 20 mpg that's only 100 miles per tank. One particular ride we were out for 12 straight hours. Towards the end mine was cutting out on corners, I thought it was overheating but I was just running out of fuel. (Light never came on) a few of the other guys had already run out and were borrowing gas just to get home. Not sure how many miles we did that day. No control, no coasting, no down shifting. No crawling around at low rpm's drawing little little attention to myself, always making the same amount of noise. Another critical issue I found is when I hit the brakes hard before cornering and the rear slides, letting off the brakes doesn't control the slide, it's a delayed reaction as the engine needs to catch up to the wheels in speed. I've never heard anyone mention or notice it, but I'm certain it's resulted in undesired results/injuries etc. Especially if the rider isn't aware or expecting this delay. It's a safety issue. Final feeling, I don't feel as though this type of fuel consumption is warranted, and refueling after so few miles shouldn't be a concern. It's not going to change so my only choice in most cases is to accept the drawbacks and enjoy the performance advantages. The industry isn't going to change direction at this point.

By going to a twin disc clutch, if you wanted to run taller tires, could you without bogging down the motor? Thanks for sharing.

Good question. It is a Dual Clutch Transmission not a twin disc. I am curious about larger tires. We are actually throwing 30's on ours and it looks like they will clear fine. The initial engagement has a direct feel and it doesn't seem like there is much slipping and i'm hoping no bogging. To me, that means less heat buildup and that is less wear and tear. The Talon actually has a warning light for when the clutches are getting too warm. We are throwing the 30's on it and time will tell.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a quality build but why enter the market with weaknesses that could have been easily cured before introduction. It’s not any cheaper than competitors models or you could maybe justify. Although there’s a lot of new 2019 models sitting around with reduced pricing now...maybe worth it. Hopefully the aftermarket turbo will wake it up!

@snowrulesnate4 жыл бұрын
Jared Z not sure what clapped means but I’ve personally witnessed multiple drags races against stock RZR 1Ks and stock Talons, always close, but never seen a Honda beat it, even on pavement with launch control. Thus the fact that I stated before, Honda released it knowing it was underpowered to begin with. I’m sure the transmission helps decrease power loss compared to a belt drive in stock form but it wasn’t enough to really beat the competitors. Honda held back for some reason, probably durability and knowing most who ride it will be satisfied with it.

Think I'll stay with the Polaris RZRs. True 4 wheel lock, infinitely variable transmission that doesn't need to change gears, and the fact that they've been number one and doing this for decades, whereas this is Honda's first stab at it. The Polaris has WAY more horsepower (168 vs 104), more wheel travel, is shorter and narrower, has more ground clearance, way bigger gas tank (9.5g vs 7.3g), etc etc etc...and is the same price. Too little, too late from Honda, as always.

I'm with you! I tried Artic cat stab at trail utvs and it is a nightmare! First year was ok now after 2000 easy ish miles the engineering or lack of is showing. I think I'll stick with the tried and true RZR. I do think the true trans is cool but for 20k I want fast!

You can’t compare an NA to a turbo. Having engine braking is a huge plus with Honda. I hate how my rzr goes into neutral when not on the gas.would rather have a real transmission than a belt driven.
@mattdyer4895 жыл бұрын
I own a rzr s 1k, but have driven a talon for a few days. Your power comparison is dumb. My rzr s 1000 puts out 100hp. The talon puts out 104. You were comparing a n/a talon to a turbo rzr. In a drag race, they are about dead even. Really depends on who gets the better launch. As far as transmissions go. I will take that dct over my cvt all day everyday. The dct is far better in almost every situation. Especially in mud. The talon might not have full 4wd lock, but it goes through just as much stuff as my rzr will go through. As far as Polaris being the number one brand. That's all fine and dandy, but that isn't due to their quality. It's due to their marketing. Even as someone who owns multiple Polaris machines. I will tell you that Yamaha, can-am, and Honda smoke them when it comes to quality and reliability.

@@mattdyer489 All day. Several buddies own arctic crap and polaris and they have constant trouble. When we want to ride, my honda is always ready to go, while their american junk wants to stay home i the garage and be tended to.

Polaris cannot match the quality fit and finish of Honda or Yamaha. I went on a 3 day overnight trip with 14 RZR’s and we were constantly stopping so the RZR crew could work on their machines. It was a mess!

Don't think brakes are going to last long if their being applied all the time to get the front diff to work. Stupid decision from Honda, should be a true locker like the Pioneer. Not at all impressed! Could be a much better machine if Honda would pull their heads out of their butts. Pretty good review thanks for taking the time to do one.

Kit costs a tad over 3g's. Basically unusable in wooded trails where I'm at in NWPA. Buddy has a turbo rzr1000 and complains about having to fill up everyday.

Thanks for the video but I'll stick with my Kawasaki Teryx they came with a 3-year factory warranty it it won't go as fast as a 1000cc machine but it does everything else those machines can do without having to spend $23,000 by the time you're out the door but if you are in Glamis or wide-open desert where you would want to go over 55 miles an hour then a 1000cc machine is for you

That's why Honda has a 72hp Pioneer 1000. Awesome true UTV that can also rip to 67mph if you need to. Cost was under $10.5k
