I am Chinese and I live in 天津. My parents have used them before. It is entirely compatible with NES cartridges! They say it is rather a NES clone than a computer. Those "educational computers" are much cheaper that the real NES back then and you can run visually every NES cartridges on it, and that's why it went really popular. Just a technical point, this computer's CPU is a total clone of the MOS 6502 processor on the NES, however they added an extra I/O chip for the keyboard. (Pls pin me)
@ОнуфрийНечепуренко5 жыл бұрын
Back in the 90s and early 2000s these Chinese computers were very popular in Russia, as well as other NES clones from Taiwan. Russians called them "Subor".

shuo feng Famicom cartridges, not NES cartridges. Those two have different numbers of pins.

@@ertuncdelikaya8237 That would have to suck for anyone trying to insert a NES cartridge into a shuo feng Famicom shoe.
@hakureicirno60594 жыл бұрын
It's not a total clone. These famiclones usually use UMC6576 or similar NES-On-Chip as their kernel rather than separate chips. There are lots special quirks and differents in it compared to a normal Famicom or NES. If you try to run some very complex games that are tailored to Famicom/NES circuit setup e.g. BattleToads, it won't work. On the other hand, complex games tailored for such NOAC won't work on Famicom/NES, especially unlicensed (but actually quite polished) games by Waixing (外星科技) or Jncota (晶科泰).

Nes is a computer because a console is a computer
@volocat5 жыл бұрын
Let me throw in some trivia. Subor was actually founded by Duan Yongping - a very enterprising fellow. Back than foreign gaming devices were banned in China, so he actually personally reverse engineered a Famicom and made it play jNTSC games in PAL (that's why here are vertical bands on the screen and the timing is off). He arranged mass production of a "homegrown" gaming device, effectively coining the standard of an awful famiclone as we know it. He mass produced the bloody thing until the late 90s, when he got fed up by it, sold the company and started a DVD-player manufacturer known as BBK. In mid to late 2000s effectively every second DVD-player in the world was BBK (one way or another)... And then he got fed up again! He founded a mobile phone manufacturer known as OPPO and One Plus. His company is bigger than Apple in Asia and Duan Yongping one of the most rich Chinese... Well one of the richest people in the world! I wonder, what shall he do, when he gets bored with mobile phones? PS. I have one of those Subor keyboard contraptions (the Russian version), as I collect weird computers. Sadly no educational cartridges. Perhaps somebody would ship me one of those? I'll pay for the delivery.

As a guy born in and spend 18 years in China, here are a few facts I want to mention in addition to the video: In theory, game consoles are banned until 2014, but this doesn't stop us kids from playing games on all different game consoles. there are two ways of getting game consoles. First way is called “水货”, and can be translated to parallel import or smuggle, and sources can be from Japan, North america, HK and Europe, with minor price difference in final sale price. The other way is to re-purpose game consoles as other devices, for example, iQue is a partner and redistributor of Nintendo in mainland China, they call their iQue DS as “双屏多媒体互动系统” or "dual-screen multimedia interactive system" instead of calling them game console, therefore they can be sold on market. There are stores selling game consoles and games, for example, my hometown (a medium sized city) used to have 4-5 stores in downtown. When I was in middle and high school, I save money for a whole year to buy my game console, stores will crack the console for you (PSP) or sell you cracked R4 cartridge along with DS so I can basically play for free, and I pay a small fee (~1 USD) to get my memory card filled in store with whatever game I want. For TV consoles such as PS3, before crack, we usually rent games from the store by paying a deposit then rental fee, or trade in played games for another title. Before I came to Canada, I owned a Gameboy color, GBA, DS, DSi XL, PSP1000, PSP3000, and Wii, PS2, PS3, and by parents bought me NES clone, sega genesis, and a playstation 1 when I was young. As for 5:26, for Chinese gamer right now, buying games in store actually quiet an outdated way of getting new titles, and people usually shop games online since its often cheaper. Video game stores is almost a dying industry in China because less and less people buy in actual stores, therefore I can understand why the store keep a low inventory on their shelf.

as a kid in 90s Russia I can confirm, I got my Subor back in late 1996 unfortunately the controllers plugs was really fragile, pins in ports was a bit fragile as well due to the technical complexity we didn't have some major releases from Nintendo, like Super Mario Bros 2 (Doku doku panic) and Super Mario Bros 3 etc, we missed all major releases that required some additional chips in cartridges

For those that don't know Naomi is one of the most prominent female tech youtubers out there. She makes almost all of her costumes and gear herself. In the past she has also been given a lot of hate for her appearance and looks sadly.
@tomservo50075 жыл бұрын
The hate comes from the fact she is not telling the whole story. You really think she learned English from online forums? Her lack of Chinese forum postings isn't suspicious to you? There is also a questionable engineering team behind the scenes. The hate isn't from her looks (which by the way throws native Chinese views on modesty out the window -- odd thing to do for a native female to do in China) -- I don't hate her , but don't misrepresent the controversy.

If it wasn't for that system, I wouldn't have had my first exposure to Super Mario Bros, Contra, Castlevania, Double Dragon, and so many other franchises that I still consider near and dear. My model was designed to look virtually identical to the Famicom, slightly different from the one at the end of this video. Great video as always!. As an 90's kid in a small city in Colombia, my first game console was an NES clone, the real thing was very expensive, and the clones had an advantage: built in games! My console had 20 games, others even have hundreds of games (some hacked versions of the same games was usual to find in those). As 'educational' computers, my first one was a real thing: a 166MHz Pentium MMX in 1998, good times...

Interesting, although China is a PAL region which is a 50hz signal so I'd expect it to run the same as the UK game. I'll check it out with a side by side when my NES is cleaned up

Not many early PAL Nintendo and SEGA games were properly ported to work on 50hz, e.g Sonic 1 on the MegaDrive. If you ran the US ROM of Super Mario on that NES RetroPi I think it would demonstrate the difference better.

Though nes games has PAL versions, but most of the pirate game cartridges in China are copied from Japanese or American version, they are not intended to port to 50hz PAL machines, that's why it sounds slower.

The only game I owned for months was a cassette copy of Frogger I paid $5 Canadian for. I did later upgrade to an 800xl, with disk drive and Atari printer while running Atari Writer Plus, but for the most part, it was a very fun games machine. I would have to admit that the first productive machine was my Atari STFM running the Mac Emulator on Atari's monochrome display...WYSIWYG was decent, but limited on a dot Matrix printer. I would have to admit though, that before PC, my Amiga 1200 with multisync display...another great video.

RetroManCave that would be awesome :) PS in South Africa(where I am) we never really had the official Nintendo systems only a extremely limited number of of grey imports , what thrived here was the famiclones , nick named "TV games" mostly it was the "golden China" clones , I wouldn't mind sending you one but it will be no different to any other famiclone you can get there so I don't know if it will be any value to you :)

Actualy,in the 1990-2000 a thing called Subor(Сюбор in russian) did exist,as well as the other clone called Liko BBG-1.They both looked kinda similar to the one in the video. To be honest,the whole russian/chinese Nintendo Famicom cloning industry was booming at the time,moreover in is possible to find some still being produced under the same labeling on in the same formfactor,which they have used then.Thanks for your videos RetroManCave! P.S. Those consoles are easily obtainable and cheap nowadays,so it could be a cool video to overview some of the knock-off examples :)
