Simply awesome. I think you captured - perhaps in the previous video - the problem with the RME tutorials. They assume you know *everything* other than whatever element they are hyper focused on in a given training video. They have no grasp of teaching the parts of a concept vs. some highlights and then jumping to the end. It's to their detriment too. They have simply amazing products and TotalMix creates a flexibility that is not, to the best of know knowledge, matched in any other product line (probably is, but I haven't found it with the hardware/software/virutual mix like TotalMix provides). Thank you again for these.

I've been fighting with TotalmixFX since I bought my RME UFX+ (switching from Apogee Symphony) and Pulse16MX and a Neumann v475 24 channel summing mixer while switching from Pro Tools to Reaper for a DAW. It's taken a year because I have a life in addition to recording. These video's have been an invaluable source of relief! And I can read! Like you, I found nothing truly as helpful as what you've done here. Thank you and I did indeed subscribe.

Great tutorials - already seeing why I avoid doing much with my RME comments below. It creates a lot of tension with users. It really is in terms of totalmix a marmite interface with producers either loving what it offers or put of completely. It’s got great DAC in it but for me has always been over complicated to use. I ranted enough in the past about it on forums but some of the RME fanboys can be quite brutal which makes getting help using it sometimes frustrating with people telling you to read the manual which is not intuitive. Anyway I’ll watch your series to see if it will change my perspective. I just fear it’s not intuitive for a smooth workflow.

Some great hidden things revealed, thanks for that. Looking forward to the series. Although to be honest, I think it's a bit easier to follow the routing by highlighting which output you're trying to use and then you can see all the fader levels going to that output in the mixer window. It works for me anyway.

Hey Barry, this is great! Easily more useful than the RME training videos. Right now, I'm in DAW mode and have been fooling around with the idea of taking the plunge to full mode. I tried that early on, but was having all sorts of "gotchas" with Cubase, specifically trying to setup the Control Room. I've added a bunch of hardware synths, more microphones and another 8 ins/outs via a Scarlett Octopre via ADAT. Now that have all this going on, I thought I'd revisit the Full Mode. Hoping by the time I get through your videos I can take the plunge! I also have a UFX+ so I'm tracking all this so far!

Super informative Barry. Certainly could have used this some years back. For the longest time I used to copy & paste my routing as a crutch due to my lack of understanding Total Mix. It certainly led to some chaos within Total Mix after-awhile resulting in feedback when using my mastering chain. I eventually solved the issues by trail & error. I really appreciate the deep dive into Total Mix. For us RME users you are a hero. Context is worth it's weight in gold!

Excellent overview of a complex routing tool Barry. Totalmix is an amazing environment once you get your head wrapped around the possibilities. Totalmix plus a digital (AES, SPDIF, ADAT, or MADI) or AOIP option (AES67, AVB or DANTE) creates an entire digital patching solution allowing zero latency integration with digital outboard without additional A/D D/A conversion steps. In my studio, this has allowed me to integrate older digital outboard via SPDIF or AES to DANTE adapters, and use that outboard at any point in the recording or mixing process. Folks used to working in Pro Tools (HD / HDX) have had this kind of functionality via DSP for years, and may still have a slight advantage with regards to integration within the DAW, but considering the functionality Totalmix affords, the price differential is staggering for a point of entry. Again...well done.

Check in update: after the video and a cup of coffee, I went and played around for about an hour with the concepts Barry explained and what he said is so accurate. I did have a problem undoing the routing and either had do the clear channel routing option or go into the Matrix View to make changes. This could be my version of TotalMix. Other than that I discovered a heck of a lot and it started making sense. I never used the Matrix View before, because it seemed daunting, but I somewhat get it now. I even began adding EFXs to incoming signals and sending different versions to separate outputs. I used my bass guitar as the source material and damn near zoned out into a practice session. I explored this because I wanted to figure out how to send reverb and compression to a potential singer or artist to enhance their performance on the way in for recording. The dynamica compressor of TotalMix sound really good and really tightened up my bass signal to the point I did not want to turn it off. The light bulb is starting to come on for me with this software, so I cannot wait for the follow up video. I labeled my snap shot and layout as Barry's Test as a reminder. Thanks again Barry!!!

Great work here. Does totalmix need to be open in order for a/b buttons to be available on the BabyFace Pro. I have some track groups set up and I like to be able to mute them from the device, but it seems I can only do this if TM is open. Same for the DIM button. Workaround? Since my Mac audio comes through the BFP, I would rather not have to have TM load when I startup so that if I am doing some other audio that is not recording I can still quickly mute the signal. Sometimes I practice guitar and I would like to quickly mute the signal but I have to have TM open to do this. Ideas?

Hi @BarryJohns, first of all thank you for your excellent tutorials. I have a question: at minute 8:44 you route Mic 9 to AN 1/2 and the volume is -3.3 , and when you choose 9/10 the volume is -32.4 . But when you go to the Matrix view, Out 1/2 is -6.3 and Out 9/10 is -35.4. Why is there a difference of -3 db more in each one? Thanks again.

Cool video I also have a UFX+, I noticed you called the software playback section the hardware outs in the matrix but if you look to the right you will see sample playback in the right corner. The hardware out are the bottom row. Also, I don't see you using loopback to use DIGICHECK maybe that's for another video. So many things you can do like recording to USB.

Thanks Barry. Awesome video series. I just got a UFX3 and I had an RME ADI-2 pro FS for my ad/da feeding my monitors. If you have time to explain routing hardware and if there’s a way to use this as a digital patchbay. I have a WESAUDIO TITAN but all my 500 series modules are connected in series in the back of the chassis but I’m thinking about having each connected to a separate in and out on the RME for more control
@seanwool Жыл бұрын
I think you are making this a little more complicated than it needs to be. I would start with the output section. Each fader in the bottom row (the output section) is it's own mixer with its mix output as the corresponding hardware output on the interface. Yes, the UFX+ is between 47 and 94 mixers depending on mono/stereo choices. When you click on any fader in the output section, you are bringing its mixer to the front. The mixer takes as its input all of the hardware inputs on the interface (represented in the first row) as well as a compliment of software inputs (represented in the second row). If you are hearing something on a hardware output that you don't think you should be, click on its corresponding fader in the bottom row (the output section). Then treat the first two rows like a traditional stereo mixer.

Try reading through the comments. What may seem like overcomplicated to you, is extremely simplified to other people.

I think this is why people get confused. They are so used to thinking about the inputs into the Daw they don't think there are actually 56 regular mixers you just need to select at the bottom. Nuendo Direct monitoring is also overlooked by nearly all Nuendo users as its not origionally supported in the control room. The other thing is inputs into the Daw and other softwares has nothing to do with total mix. The outputs obviously come back into playbacks though. The layout is similar to the old school tracking mixers with tape returns on each channel.
@1972OGTony Жыл бұрын
Nah he did right by starting with the input section especially if you're doing OTB recording, that's biggest confusion because you're hearing double audio and won't understand which is the return coming from your hardware gear.

This is great stuff Barry, thank you for doing this. I'm currently waiting for my UFXIII and Ferrofish Pulse 16 MX, so with these training sessions I can hit the ground running. My big question is probably going to be answered in your next training session - Can you, in TotalMix, take a mic pre input on the UFXIII, pre AD conversion and route it , to an analogue compressor and then from the analogue output of the Comp into an analogue EQ, in series, so the signal only gets converted to digital once? Pretty much like inserts on an analogue mix desk? That would be superb if you could do that to reduce the (admittedly, small)l degradation in original signal from being converted AD/DA multiple times.

hi Barry - first of all, thank you so much for your RME videos; they have really helped to demystify TotalMix. the RME videos are almost useless and yours are super clear and thorough. i've subscibed to your channel and am leaerning a ton! i have a Fireface UFX III and am having a frustrating problem - maybe you can help. it's probably something really simple but sadly it's escaping me. every interface i have ever owned (UA, Focusrite, etc) the headphones just work out of the box, mirroring the main output. with the RME i just cannot get anything from the headphones. even when i switched to DAW mode, still nothing. i'm getting main audio out just fine, but how do i get the headphones to work? i don't need anything fancy or multiple mixes - it's just me in my home studio - this is so frustrating, but probably a simple thing....i didn't see anything specific in your videos about this either...might be a good thing to add since i'm probably not alone... help? thanks a ton :)
