The earrings weren't fake. That's why the Mexican lady took her earrings instead of Kaz's money. The Mexican lady immediately saw the value of her earrings and they were worth 10x's more than Kaz's money.

Kaz just ASSUMED they were (fake) when Noni assured him the "merit badge" was worth way more (after all, how could a simple gold bracelet be worth more than a pair of presumably diamond earrings?!). Obviously Noni just meant it was worth more- and HE was worth more- to HER. AWWW! As an aside, it was really sweet of him to try to stop her from hawking the earrings.
