The panda is one of the 'charismatic megafauna' that gets the most public attention, but it's almost certainly an unwise choice to try and conserve compared to others. That said, the popular species can serve to draw attention to the conservation of all species. Just like the curator says in the video, the panda is telling a story. Long story short humans are destroying habitat at a rate that threatens the very ecological structures they depend on.
